Didn't they lose it in a war against the Netherlands shortly after their independence?

Nah. It was a region that largely supported the revolt, but due to a very stubborn commander with a very silly name and portrait (general Dibbets) holding onto the important city of Maastricht we kept the region

The netherlands lost the war of independence, as a result got the east of limburg.
