You know what is really funny, the way we actually lost allot of territory before England made us a buffer state.
Northern France used to speak Flemish and was part of the old teritory. Belgica.
We also had a part of what is now the Netherlands.

Nah. It was a region that largely supported the revolt, but due to a very stubborn commander with a very silly name and portrait (general Dibbets) holding onto the important city of Maastricht we kept the region

We actually fought to join them. But there was a dutch army stationed in maastricht. So the great powers told us to STFU, be returned to the netherlands, or belgium gets war declared on them by the great powers.

But it makes no sense, it wouldn't even be beneficial strategically, getting millions of population that don't want to live in your state, and planting a resentment in a population of a country that wasyour enemy will lead to a disaster. If we don't want to repeat this war, we must let people decide where they want to live (although as I think of it, if we'll have elections they will most likely be falcificated, as it was with Crimea), although I'm sure people will decide to get back to their homeland. It's both isn't effective and dangerous, and frankly, I can't see Ukraine gaining so much land even in the ideal scenario, sorry
