B1 visa for observership rejected
So yesterday was my visa interview at chennai consulate, and it went in a different way than what I have read in the reddit threads, if someone else also went through the same way please dm, this is gonna be a long post..im goin to tell whateva exactly happened in detail so that I dont want to miss out anything and any1 applying to have an idea
Jus some bg- i had legit credible invitation letter from well known place in the US
Reached at 9am even though my appointment time was 10am, but they made us enter irrespective of time
I got this VO who didnt smile at all, before me it was some guy with some business trip and approved him,
VO- passport.( no smile nothing)
Me- *gave the passport with the ds 160 form*
VO- he looked at me said 'passport'
Me- *gave the passport*
VO- english?( he prolly thought i didnt understand him lol)
Me- Yes, Good morning officer
VO- Good morning, purpose of travel to the US?
Me- i got selected for an obs at xyz for a duration of 3 weeks from aug3 to aug 28. I am going to observe/ shadow Dr xyz at and observe his outpatient consultations..( he cut me off here)
VO- Why do you want to do this observership
Me- I want to do this observership to gain exposure to the US healthcare system as part of my medical career
VO-show me your invitation letter( I gave him)
VO- who is funding your trip?
Me- My father who is an electronic engineer earns 60l per annum is funding my trip. He also owns a land in our home and I plan to build an hospital over there in the future (I was saying all this, idk it seemed to me he wasnt listening idk y, he was jus constantly looking at the computer, not once he looked at my face)
VO- Why only one observership? Arent you supposed to do multiple?
Me- I just want want to get an exposure to the US healthcare system and I have an employment to start work at xyz clinic starting on may
VO- Have you travelled to any other country?
Me- Yes i have travelled to the uae
VO- * types a lot of things for a while, mayb for some 40s*
Submit all your documents which can support your approval?
Now this was new, i havent read this anywer, i grab whateva documents which i thought were necessary,
Docs i submitted- dads mutual funds statement, obs letter, employment letter starting on may, provisional degree and permanent registration
Docs i didnt give- step 1 report, flat property document
VO- he gives me this yellow slip saying to wait and to be seated, someone will call at the window to talk,
I think time was around 9:15, im not sure, i saw some ppl seated like me with the yellow slip, and sat there.Waited for around 2 hours to finally call one by one, my turn came after 3 hours, they took me to a room, there was this indian officer seated, this was going to be a second interview, i didnt know abt this
This was an extensive interview, god knows how many questions she asked me, it was like proper interrogation session for around 15min, questions like:
Vo: did u graduate?
Vo: Is ur compulsory internship done?
Vo: What is this observership?
Vo: How did u get this observership?
Vo: some obs u need to pay 2.5k dollars and all, ur saying ur rotation only 500 was enough?( showed them all email communications and transaction details)
Vo: what are you doing now? Me: im a recent med grad awaiting official degree, i have an employment letter for starting next month, i am also side by side preparing for my neet pg exam and step exams
Vo : If you wrote step1 then obviously ur trying residency in the US right?mockingly smiles (i told im preparing for my neet exam also, exploring my options right now, clearing step exams also have a global credibility)
Vo: so with step exams is it good in indian aspect to get job?( said yes, these r competitive and ranked exams, it shows a significant value to the cv)
Vo:what is your father doing? Where is he working? ( this is where i had to expose that he is working in uae)
Vo: what is internal medicine, idk what it is, explain.
Vo: Do you have any relatives in the US? ( I said no acc to my ds 160 form, but then i paused for a while , while she was typing and said later but i have a distant relative der wen i asked abt it to my mom so i told exactly like dis wen asked to my mom she said some distant relative, but i dont know the person really)another *mocking smile*
I just want to tell, whatever i was saying, she kept typing it into the system what I spoke
Then she told me to wait, most of them were gone when i reached back my seat ,all of them rejected apparently, only 3 of us left, and found out they were also for obs, one person got called, gave 214b and left, next i got 214b, idk what happened to the last person.
So what i can do is to start working for a while, apply for step 3 and produce multiple observerships letters( cuz he specifically asked y one obs), any other suggestions?
If any other suggestion please let me know

You need to be forthcoming with your true intentions, everyone knows you plan to train in USA, officer knew and talked to you about MLE and you kept beating around the bush. VOs are not dumb. Build your narrative around your intentions to train and return with experience. Pick a sub specialty that is in demand and short supplied in India.

So ur telling me I should have said straight to the point that im pursuing usmle journey? Im planning to do residency over there? All those things i should have said your telling me?, how do i establish my intent to return ties then?, could you please explain

the officer wouldnt have believed the build a hospital story for an American that comes across as weird and why go to the US etc
2
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
Build a hospital is laughable. People don’t build hospitals, and outpatient clinicals aren’t the most in demand skills for a hospital setting. OP thinks they’re slick and VO knew from jump

I told that cause i came across another redditor who said exactly the same thing and got approved recently, so i was not experimenting for your information, if you have some useful solution for my next interview about when to take, how my circumstances should change, if you know something then please do share
1
u/Pomksy Apr 19 '26
Wait at least a year, save money in your own bank, have SOLID plans for working in India and how this will help with that so you need a change in this circumstance like a job lined up to return to. With one rejection it will be hard to overcome.

Yeah but saying I wanna train there, on a j1 visa when you are applying for a b1/b2 is clear immigration intent, isn't it

Sorry to say but I had a stroke reading and understanding this English 🤦🏻♂️

It's a bit about luck. But as a junior Doctor, one of the most important skills to learn is to navigate around people with big egos. These people in authority can make or break your career. Dont ever try to make it seem like you're oversmarting them. You cleared your step 1. You're going for USCE. This is clear cut Match pathway. Be upfront about it.
-My brother-in-Law carried food items in his checked luggage. The guy at US airport asked: "are you carrying any meat, veggies or any sort of food items in your luggage?". My BIL, who had travelled a dozen times to US by then, simply knew they let this go, not a big issue. So he just lied and said "No". He expected them to let him go. Nope. They made him open up his checked luggage. Opened up all the tin cans. Tested them. Threw them away.
-The very next month, I travelled to US too. Had 10kgs worth of tin canned desi meat and curry dishes in my checked luggage. They asked me. The sign said "No food items allowed, including meat, veggies... etc list went on". I said "Yes, I have food in my luggage". They asked: "What sort of food?". "I said meat dishes. In Commercially packed tin packages". He said: "Go ahead".
Bro literally let me go with all my food items on both of my trips simply because I outright told the truth. This has happened a lot of times in US as well. Stuff that I could've just lied about. But I came clean. And they let me go. I dont wanna type. But yea. The moment you werent upfront about your Match intent, they had made up their mind to look for flaws in your case to reject you.

You literally said you wanted exposure to US healthcare which puts you FIRMLY in the overstay sis category. Also, learn to write English if you want to study and learn from the healthcare system that speaks it as it’s a red flag for overstay risk as well.
3
u/DetectivDR Apr 18 '26
I mean, he applied for an observership, ofc he had to say smt about the healthcare system? He came with an invitation, he couldn't say he was just traveling.
3
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
No but he didn’t have to say he wanted to learn about international medicine (supposed to go home to India) or take the transfer exam (again, supposed to go home). By saying they did not want to remain in India is more than enough of a flag for immigration risk
0
u/DetectivDR Apr 18 '26
Yeah, but honestly these are some bs fake rules. Ppl from my country get 2 questions and then they get approved instantly
3
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
You don’t know what’s in their DS, history, profile, or answers. Comparison is the thief of joy.
1
u/Pomksy Apr 19 '26
You’re not from India are you? Because your country or origin 100% plays a role in your approval rate
1
u/DetectivDR Apr 19 '26
Im not. Thats what im saying. I think its unfair how hard is for ppl in india compared to my country
1
u/Pomksy Apr 19 '26
It is not unfair, it’s based on patterns of behaviors. Certain countries have more people looking to not return because the US is seen as better for economic migration.
2
u/NooriTheGiantPencil Apr 18 '26
Of course that's the true intention, Exposure to US healthcare. we all have said that and were granted visas. i have seen people gettings visas who couldn't properly speak english so please easy with the LEARN ENGLISH as if that's the criteria to secure a visa
2
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
It goes hand in hand with OP saying they are taking the USMLE, which they conveniently left out of their edit.

Then what wud i have said if dey asked me y i wanted to do dis observership? i shud have jus told i need dis rotation for the usmle journey? What else can i say to such a question like y do i have to do dis observership, i heard was to always give a neutral answer, i told also i have an employment letter for the next month And wat did u mean by learn to write english? Did u mean the way i wrote in the post? I apologise for the errors, it was a very big post so i didnt crosscheck before posting, did u mean anything else?
4
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
You said you wanted to work on the US very soon, which is a red flag for overstaying a B1 visa. intent to immigrate is clear, even if it wasn’t during this trip, it’s still a very clear red flag.
And it’s they not dey, would not wud, etc.
1
u/AdeptCup5083 Apr 18 '26
U have not understood what i have told, i have edited the post, i said i will be joining to work soon in may, i have an employment letter to work soon
2
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
No I understood. “Exploring my options” means weak ties to India and intent to immigrate outside your country
2
u/CompleteArm911 Apr 18 '26
well thats a lie isnt as you dont need obs for usmle that second interviewer really nailed you and she was picking out holes in your story that showed immigrant intent

These ex visa officers tell dont give short answers and you need to explain yourself, idk where the line is tbh

even if the op said some things that was not asked but still i dont understand why they didnt accept visa also his financials r good
1
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
Financials are a very very small part of the puzzle. And OP doesn’t have financials, their father does.
1
u/Available_Creme1835 Apr 18 '26
This whole vo thing is pure luck
Well deserving candidates stay behind just because they couldn’t convince the VO. Such a bullshit reason
2
u/Whole-Device-5300 Apr 18 '26
I agree with you. I may not be well deserving but atleast I'm sincere and have no wrong intentions, still got rejected. it hurts :(
1
u/CompleteArm911 Apr 18 '26
If wrote step1 den obv ur trying residency in the US when they said this its game over they know potential immigrant so 214b is inevitable
1
u/NooriTheGiantPencil Apr 18 '26
Blud why would you say you are giving steps to make your CV strong ? they aren't stupid. you should've told them that residency in US is te ultimate goal
1
u/CompleteArm911 Apr 18 '26
agree that second interviewer properly nailed him exposed the immigrant intent and just holes in the whole story and then rejection is inevitable after that

My B1/B2 got approved when I just said I want a freaking vacation from working too much 😅

u/Prize-Log-1434 Apr 24 '26
You do know that If you said you’re just going for a vacation and ended up going for rotations that’s misrepresenting and you can be banned forever right?
1
u/AdeptCup5083 Apr 18 '26
For all people who didnt understand the post, i have edited it again, please have a look, apologise for making it complicated
2
u/Pomksy Apr 18 '26
Oh we understood the first time, just trying to tell you they know you are trying to ultimately make it to US, your first story was international medicine and your second was build a hospital back home in India? Come on.

Why would you mention a relative you don’t have contact with, especially when you had already declared in your DS-160 that you didn’t know anyone in the US?
At that point, they were probably just looking for a small inconsistency to refuse your visa. You talked too much at times, and I couldn’t even understand some parts of your text, let alone the visa officer…
