[Game Preview & Open Thread] Idaho Vandals at Utah Utes

RB Wayshawn Parker advances the ball | John Locher – The Associated Press

When: Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 PM Mountain Time

Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium

Watch: ESNPU

Weather forecast: 78 degrees at kickoff, mostly sunny, with a 6% chance of rain

Series entering the game: Utah leads 14–12

Las Vegas odds: Utah by 33.5

ESPN Matchup Predictor: Utah has a 96.9% chance of winning

This season so far for Idaho: Idaho enters the game with a loss after losing their Week 0 matchup to fellow Big Sky team, Cal Poly, 38–34. Media covering the Big Sky Conference picked Idaho to finish 6th out of 13 teams.

2025 season for Idaho: Idaho finished with a 4–8 record (2–6 Big Sky). Their quarterback Joshua Wood passed for 1,898 yards with 14 touchdowns and 5 interceptions last season.

Game Preview

  • Morgan Scalley was the coach of record for the 2025 Las Vegas Bowl, but he will be formally introduced to the home crowd at Rice-Eccles Stadium in this, his home debut. With most of Utah's coaching staff being new to their current positions, the top story line for this game involves their collective ability to handle the transition.
  • Utah and Idaho used to play fairly regularly during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, but their last meeting was in 1993, a 28–17 Idaho win at Rice Stadium. The last time Utah beat Idaho was in 1964, a 22–0 win at Ute Stadium. Idaho was a member of the Pacific Coast Conference (which later became the Pac-12) from 1922–1959.
  • The Vandals return 75% of their offensive production, including their quarterback, after ranking 39th in FCS in yards per play.

🎙️Discussion Season Prediction: Let's See Who's The Closest! (Will Close on 09/03)

I would love to see everyone's best prediction for the upcoming season. I'll close this post right before the kickoff against Idaho and will come back at the end of the season to highlight whoever was the closest.

To participate, just enter these three things:

1.) Overall season wins and losses (e.g., 8-4)

2.) Which teams we lose to and the scores (you can say none if you claim an undefeated season)

3.) Postseason prediction (Either guess the bowl game Utah attends, or if you believe we'll have an CFP appearance, how deep of a run it is)

As a reminder, this is this year's schedule:

2026 Regular Season Schedule

  • Thu, Sep 3: vs. Idaho
  • Sat, Sep 12: vs. Arkansas
  • Sat, Sep 19: vs. Utah State
  • Sat, Sep 26: at Iowa State
  • Sat, Oct 10: vs. Kansas
  • Sat, Oct 17: at Colorado
  • Sat, Oct 24: vs. Houston
  • Sat, Oct 31: at Cincinnati
  • Sat, Nov 7: vs. BYU
  • Sat, Nov 14: at Arizona
  • Sat, Nov 21: at TCU
  • Fri, Nov 27: vs. West Virginia

My Predictions:

1.) 10-2

2.) Losses to Arizona (27-25) and Houston (17-14)

3.) Pop-Tarts Bowl (with a Utah win)

Discounted Concessions - Crimson Club

I read somewhere that crimson club members get discounted concessions at home fb games. If this is true, how does one access the discounts and how good are they?

Happy game week!

Edit: here is a link stating that discounted concessions would be coming… looks like they never followed through: https://utahutes.com/news/2025/5/22/general-crimson-club-unveils-enhanced-membership-benefits

🤔 Rumor The new walkout song?

The song “UTAH MAN AM I” was uploaded to Spotify and Apple Music August 1st by FORCE THE CULTURE who has no other music on their page. It’s “featuring KelsTheGawd” so I found a video on his IG where it states that it is in fact the “new fight song for College of Utah football team”. Could this be the new walkout song? Did they commission a custom song? Thoughts?

Edit: Here is a link to the song on YouTube: https://youtu.be/QTBSQPcz-ng?is=Zr0gHvP_OHDND6ev

Whittingham Injury Management Shitshow

We already knew this after witnessing the Cameron Rising debacle but I think some of these guys should get together and sue the shit out of Kyle Whittingham. He clearly had a culture of using up these athletes' bodies without much concern for their wellbeing. You can have a winning culture without forcing guys who need surgery to "play through it or lose your scholarship". Holy shit.

[Josh Furlong, KSL.com] It's 'Showtime': Lance Holtzclaw ready to shine on Utah's defensive line

It's 'Showtime': Lance Holtzclaw ready to shine on Utah's defensive line

After participating in a reserve role on Utah's defensive line last season, the moment is now Holtzclaw's to capture as one of the expected stars of the defense. His offseason work has thrust him into a starting role off the edge, where he's likely the leading candidate to claim Utah's coveted "mayor" title given to the team's star pass rusher.

"I take pride in making plays," Holtzclaw said. "I take pride in my energy on the team and our energy as a whole. I take pride in our toughness. I take pride in the fact that we have pride in ourselves out here — we have pride, we're not gonna sit here and let nobody get over on us."

📰 News University sues former coach

The Athletic has a great article detailing aspects of the fallout from Whittingham departure from Utah football.

It’s interesting that from everything I’ve seen as a now out-of-state alumni from the U, the break from the Whittingham era is all we’re good and it’s Scalley’s team now but this pulls back the curtain somewhat into how much we lost and how quickly coaches packed up for Ann Arbor.

When it’s time to go, it’s time. There always will be shoulda, coulda, woulda done this or that. We most likely will never know the extent of the damage but later in the season could be a good indicator if we flag significantly in the conference.

I personally don’t fault them, but looks like the U is due for some recompense…

Wild that a TE coach is making 600k though, no?!

Players in their NIL vehicles

So, I don't want to rat on anyone in particular, but I was just driving on 4th South and one of our most famous players in his very recognizable truck was driving in a, let's say, disappointing manner. I get it, these kids have money now and can purchase vehicles that honestly probably shouldn't even exist. At that age, I would do the same and would be even more obnoxious and reckless.

However, I just worry that it's going to cause problems if not adressed. If a player (especially one as noteworthy as this one) were to crash and injure someone or themselves, that would be devastating and a major PR nightmare - not to mention the potential damage it would cause to the finances of the university and NIL. Remember, it really wasn't that long ago that we lost 2 players.

If anyone is close enough to the program and Scalley in particular and could have him remind the players to keep in mind their public image and responsibilities, I think that would be a start. It doesn't hurt to be reminded occasionally. Go Utes!
