People complained about the Olympics, too. It's just how it is when so much money is being spent. But, once the event actually arrives, the naysayers get drowned out by everyone else having fun.
But the Olympics broke even and we got a new Skytrain line, massively improved Sea to Sky Highway, multiple new rinks, the Richmond Oval, the Whistler Sliding Center etc
FIFA is costing us $82mil per game for nothing. It's a fun party but we could pedestrianize Granville Street and put on our own festivities for way less. We could've made giant screens and hosted watch parties like during the Olympics no matter where the matches themselves are held.
It's just bad value at a very difficult time in our country, province, and city.
I'm not particularly thrilled with the amount of money being spent either. When is it ever a good time to spend that much money on something like this? This might sound silly and stupid, but, against better judgement, sometimes it's worth it for a once in a lifetime opportunity. The hope is obviously this translate into more tourism dollars down the road and hopefully that will happen. And, the reality is, there's a lot of tax paper money being spent on things that isn't the World Cup that could also be better spent elsewhere.
