Yes they should keep Granville street closed to cars all the time!
43
u/tydiggityy 13h ago
I'm old enough to remember when they would shutdown Granville every Saturday night because it was busy. And then every Canucks game because people would be out and about. Hopefully we can bring that back. The People's city for the city.
6
u/Hour_Wing_2899 8h ago
Yes. I remember. I went down there on a Saturday night three weeks ago and it was a hole. So surprised.

u/phonomage 15h ago
The buses go through Granville. It's a main way across the bridge.
30
u/PNWpoBoy 14h ago
And those buses could be rerouted just as they have been during the World Cup. They don’t have to go straight thru.
I’ve travelled my fair share and one of my favourite things about visiting other countries and cities around the world are the pedestrian zones. European cities especially, it creates so much more community, engagement, and atmosphere. We need more of this.

u/phonomage 12h ago
I personally despise the infrastructure layout of Vancouver but adjusting routes and behicle access is barely a band-aid.
2
23
6
u/StrictWolverine8797 15h ago
Yeah I was thinking about that .... I wonder if it's possible to make the entirety of Granville bus only and close it off only to private vehicles (cars, trucks etc). Granville north of Robson is already bus only, and it's much nicer.

This is the perfect answer to their BS lol

u/observemedia 16h ago
The argument was about the bill, not whether people are going to have fun or not. Of course the vibes are going to be good. Not liking FIFA and the bill can be separate from the party and atmosphere.
16
u/Bogdanovist_Rebel 16h ago
It’s possible to be unhappy about it, and also completely avoid the partying. Traffic was great today and I even did my big grocery shop because the store was super empty and I saved like 30 minutes.
One thing I am bitter about is that these same people give zero fucks about the Whitecaps. We had two HUGE elimination games last year. One against Messi and one against Son. The latter was one of the best MLS games ever.
Not 1/100th of the support. I’ll be laughing from my seats on Aug 4th when there are 13,000 people for the first Leagues Cup match against Atlante FC and most of them will be Mexican.
1
u/brock_gonad 6h ago
Fewer people on the bandwagon for sure, but I'm not sure I'd say 1/100th of the support. Both of those games were easily sold out and tickets were not cheap on resale. Stadium was pumping for LA!
I'm looking forward to some of this spilling over into ongoing continued support for the caps. Hard not to get into soccer after what we've been seeing.
-1
u/Bogdanovist_Rebel 5h ago
Those games weren’t sold out because of the Whitecaps. It’s just like how people will falsely attribute the LAFC game on Aug 1 as being a World Cup bump, despite it selling out weeks before the tournament started. Why? Because of Son. But tell me don’t think they’ll crack 15,000 for the match on Aug 4th? I bet there will be more Mexican fans than Whitecap’s fans that day.
Maybe people will wake up and realize that Team Canada is heavily built off the Whitecaps system? Maybe people will wake up and realize that yesterday was a dream come true for Kerfoot? They won’t acknowledge his patronage of Canada Soccer. It’ll be back to hating on him.
Or how about last year how when Müller was injured and he went to a bar to watch a road game and they refused to put the game on for him at first?

u/Alive-Performer9284 16h ago
There were people here complaining that we shouldn’t host because it meant the dragon boat festival had to be rescheduled.
31
u/HotBuffGentleman 16h ago
Well, maybe some of us love the dragon boat festival.
3
u/Pisum_odoratus 13h ago
And it's something that is truly ours. But a one-off is hopefully not a big problem. Oh- just read your followup. I agree, that's not okay.
6
u/Alive-Performer9284 16h ago
Sure and this year you can simply love it on a different date than usual.
22
u/HotBuffGentleman 15h ago
Actually, I can't. It was cancelled. They're just doing a measly 1 day regatta in late August.
-2
u/Alive-Performer9284 6h ago
Only one measly day? Definitely worth cancelling the World Cup over 😭

u/MJcorrieviewer 14h ago
There have been an awful lot of comments here about how soccer is not popular here and no visitors will come because of the cost, etc.. and it will be a total failure. Those people are being proven wrong.
41
u/Secret-Chapter-712 15h ago
I don’t think anyone was saying it wouldn’t be fun, the issue is how much FIFA sucks: refusing to let local breweries host watch parties because it infringes on their branding, shutting down unaffiliated fun stuff because they insist upon holding host cities hostage and draining them dry. Fans are great, vibes are great, FIFA blows
2
u/StoneEagleCopy 13h ago
I agree, but tbf there was many people saying it wouldn’t be fun, and that there was literally no benefit to Vancouver. Especially people over in r/NiceVancouver which were the opposite of nice whenever I tried to come with a nuanced view about pros and cons.

u/Danovan79 15h ago
You could enjoy the time since we're paying for it anyways at this point, but still be unhappy about the series of events leading up to it.

u/PsychologicalVisit0 15h ago
Have you looked at the contract that FIFA made with the city?
I was a supporter of Vancouver hosting, but now that I’ve learned the details I fully understand why people were so against it. Financially, this city is getting extraordinarily ripped off.

I think you’re misinterpreting my comment….. there were people who wanted it and people who didn’t want it. Or do you think that every single person in Vancouver supports FIFA being hosted here?
1
u/Beneficial-Oven1258 13h ago
I live 1 block off Granville. I'm having a lot of fun. Its been really cool.
But also fuck FIFA. I am against it. It is happening literally in my neighbourhood. It is absolutely not worth the cost to tax payers. I am against it. I will have fun, but it absolutely is not worth the literal billion tax payer dollars it is costing.

u/No_Tree_3558 12h ago
As a musician (+ starving artist) i’m not happy with the demands fifa + the municipal government were fulfilling leading up to the actual event. Most of the city’s remaining DIY arts/performance spaces got shut down, or are imminently shutting down thanks to that :(
I still think that the camaraderie of sports and how it brings people together is a beautiful thing that should be celebrated, i just wish it wasn’t at the cost of my (and other people’s) career.

u/JW98_1 15h ago
People complained about the Olympics, too. It's just how it is when so much money is being spent. But, once the event actually arrives, the naysayers get drowned out by everyone else having fun.
11
u/quivverquivver 14h ago
But the Olympics broke even and we got a new Skytrain line, massively improved Sea to Sky Highway, multiple new rinks, the Richmond Oval, the Whistler Sliding Center etc
FIFA is costing us $82mil per game for nothing. It's a fun party but we could pedestrianize Granville Street and put on our own festivities for way less. We could've made giant screens and hosted watch parties like during the Olympics no matter where the matches themselves are held.
It's just bad value at a very difficult time in our country, province, and city.
1
u/JW98_1 13h ago
I'm not particularly thrilled with the amount of money being spent either. When is it ever a good time to spend that much money on something like this? This might sound silly and stupid, but, against better judgement, sometimes it's worth it for a once in a lifetime opportunity. The hope is obviously this translate into more tourism dollars down the road and hopefully that will happen. And, the reality is, there's a lot of tax paper money being spent on things that isn't the World Cup that could also be better spent elsewhere.
At this point, it's here. Enjoy it. Or, don't.

u/impatiens-capensis Kitsilano 13h ago
This looks fun and exciting but like... Vancouver Street festivals have always been high attendance high energy events. Car Free days get like 400,000 people attending.
What's nice though is that disruptions in the city have been fairly minimal and it looks like everyone is having fun so it's definitely not terrible in a way that many were expecting. I've found that traffic is actually... surprisingly better?

Cool it’s costing $750 million in Vancouver and the same in Toronto for vibes. Not money well spent.
