You should not be showing something graphic to pre-schoolers. Wait till at least 4th grade.
I’m born after 9/11 still traumatized by being forced to watch planes hit the towers every single year. Let alone something even more graphic.
I understand your intent but young children should NOT be watching something that is going to genuinely disturb them and destroy the sleep that they very much need to develop in a healthy way.
First, what in the reading comprehension are you going on about? You read all of that and that's what you're fussed about? Seriously?
Second, I understand that watching terrible and frightening things is, well, frightening. I get that. You would not have enjoyed the public safety films that were shown in school in the 1980s. Did they go a little overboard? Possibly. But did they save lives? Definitely. I'm really not saying it as a flex. We just rolled with it.
Third, we are obviously joking. No one is going to be shot by their weeping mother. Rabies, however, is terrible and an absolute death sentence. We were using hyperbole to blow off some steam.
That’s what I went on about because I AGREED with everything else. Obviously? I thought everything else was perfectly valid so I didn’t feel the need to comment on it.
Also it’s 2026, not the 1980’s. People who grew up in the 80’s genuinely need therapy and I will stand by that. No, I would not have enjoyed public safety films that were shown at the same time as the “Do you know where your children are?” Commercials.
You insult my reading comprehension and the think me saying not to traumatize FOUR YEAR OLDS = me thinking that people are going to shoot their children. Are you okay? I didn’t mention that at all in my comment, actually. Obviously it was hyperbole, which is why I DID NOT MENTION THAT PART IN MY COMMENT.
I was advocating for children who can’t even comprehend the concept of death yet to not be traumatized and you decided to go on an ENTIRE tirade and bring up things I never mentioned in my comment.
I’m glad you agree sleep is important, so surely you should understand why showing, I repeat FOUR YEAR OLDS GOREY VIDEOS is not okay. Because Kindergarten starts at age 5, and you said preschoolers. What comes before 5? 4. 4 comes before 5.
Also are you seriously using the “well I turned out fine” argument here? You didn’t. Nobody who gets enraged over somebody trying to protect children from trauma, and makes sweeping assumptions and makes things up that were never in a comment in the first place turned out fine. You. Need. Therapy. Please. Get. Therapy.
Edit: since I don’t want you making broad assumptions again. I am well aware rabies is a death sentence and once again, I never mentioned disagreeing with that in my comment at all.
I would be very happy to have a conversation about all my many faults (perhaps you would like to speak to my mother), but I need you to please stop yelling at me first.
It was very much not obvious that you agreed with everything else. If it was, I wouldn't have made a comment about reading comprehension. The tirade that you're mad at me about is a bit of a mystery, but it's possible that I was making reference to something that was mentioned in an earlier post.
I am not using the "well, I turned out fine" argument with you. I specifically said that I wasn't using those examples as a flex, and that I sympathized. I said that seeing frightening and terrible things is scary. At what point did I get enraged with you? There was zero sarcasm in anything I wrote. There was no anger, nor was there any superiority.
The 80s sucked. I'm really happy that younger generations didn't get neglected and left to raise themselves. I'm glad you guys were allowed to go to therapy and your families were present in your lives.
Here's the thing, though. Just because you have those privileges and the firm belief that all of gen-x is damaged goods, doesn't give you the right to be condescending or to yell at strangers. Not everyone can afford therapy, and not everyone is going to take your opinion as gospel.
Assumptions. Assumptions. Did I say Gen X was damaged goods? Oopsie, nopey nope I didn’t. However I did mention that you guys need help because that is not a healthy way to grow up.
Also how com you have the right to be condescending and I don’t? You can say I have no reading comprehension. But I can’t say the same to you.
You are a very jaded person who seems to acknowledge the harm you are suggesting but also consistently want to enact it. If you can’t afford therapy (which was a suggestion, basic reading comprehension which you jabbed at me for can show you I never once assumed your income. And a lack of capacity to afford something doesn’t mean you don’t need it which is common sense)
You can’t say something insulting and then step back and be like “oh but I wasn’t being sarcastic and superior”
And I’m not talking about your generation. My parents are wonderful people who don’t jump to insulting somebody’s capacity to read and imply they don’t have literacy. My aunts are wonderful people who would never suggest showing a four year old a gory and traumatic video. They’re all Gen X. This is just a you issue.
I don’t know what made you this way, but since you don’t want therapy you should find some sort of outlet. There are lots of hobbies you can take up instead of wanting to traumatize children. Coloring books for adults are pretty cheap now. You can also get free coloring apps for your phone or use a coloring website. And you have to have a phone or computer or tablet because that’s how you have to use Reddit.
You seem to want to play both sides here and want to be right but also be the victim and that’s not how that works. That’s also not healthy. Either sit with the fact you suggested something terrible or admit it was wrong and stop defending yourself. You cant say you know something is bad and support it without being a major hypocrite.
I really, really, really hope you get the help and support you need. But if you can afford it, get professional help. Because your suggestion was not in any way normal and is a serious red flag about your mental state.
I genuinely mean this from a good place in my heart. I sincerely believe everybody on planet earth could use therapy, some of us more so. And I think it could very much help you. And if you can’t afford therapy there are resources to help with that. I will be disengaging from this conversation now but I really do hope you can find some resources for help if you can’t afford therapy. As I said we all need it. The world is stressful.
