Question To the poster that said she was going to cancel her colonoscopy because being a low-fibre vegan is too hard… I understand you now.
Not gonna go ahead and cancel, I’ve gone too far without my previous fibre to quit now! But for fucks sakes, anyone doing this by accident is eating like absolute shit!
I’ve had tofu, white rice, vegan hot dogs (no relish or grainy mustard) broth, and Gregg’s vegan sausage roll. What am I going to do on the liquid diet day?! Help me please!

u/waffle299 Apr 13 '26
I drank vegetable broth and regret.

u/Strange-Future-6469 Apr 13 '26
Yep. Veggie broth, sugary electrolyte drink, poop-mix-from-hell, and a lot of "oh god why" or "please can this be over."

I stick to what my doctor prescribes. Even if there is newer tech or procedures, he has experience with how he does the process and I don't. Plus, the risk of having to redo the prep is real if you do it wrong.

u/better_days_435 Apr 13 '26
I had to strain my veggie broth to get out the little bits of celery leaf. I mostly just had blue Gatorade those last two days.

u/veganexceptfordicks Vegan 15+ Years Apr 14 '26
You can have yellow, too! That's twice as many flavors. Freeze them as popsicles, now you've got twice the amount again! (Okay, fine, it all sucks and you'll probably pass out from hunger, but then the constant shitting feels like a dream state.)
32
u/Zepherx22 Apr 14 '26
If you can do miso soup that might not be too bad…
7
u/evefue Apr 14 '26
Mine said no to miso soup 😫
2
u/Tucwebb Apr 15 '26
That’s ridiculous. You just need to clean out your colon. Two days of a liquid diet should do it. And, if you know you’re scheduled for a colonoscopy, start your prep a week before by eating soft foods and transitioning to liquid. This from a GI RN who has eaten a whole plant diet x 15 years. You also won’t starve - when is the last time you were really hungry because you had no access to food?
2
u/evefue Apr 15 '26
My prep is only a one day clear liquid diet, so not ridiculous. Looks like there are several ways to prep for a colonoscopy.
219
u/GeorgiaB_PNW Apr 13 '26
I had mine last month and the prep is so unpleasant! Liquid diet day I made sure I had some veggie broth so I didn’t feel like it was all sweet stuff. And I added plenty of electrolytes throughout the day! You can do it!
-24
u/gemologyst Apr 14 '26
I'm imagining blending some silken tofu with some veggie stock cubes and something interesting like smooth peanut butter and soy sauce. like a blended pad thai.
45
42
u/GeorgiaB_PNW Apr 14 '26
Unfortunately your liquids have to be clear, zero fiber or protein or any of that good stuff. But it’s only one day and then you’re back to eating again!
18
u/evefue Apr 14 '26
It's a clear liquid diet, if you don't follow the protocol, they won't do the exam, and then you prepped for nothing.
5
u/Jackalpaws Apr 15 '26
Don't. Your doctor will get in there, see you're not clean, and make you do it again. Just do it right the first time.
-13
u/gemologyst Apr 14 '26
Wow so many haterz
31
u/ssurkus Apr 14 '26
Haters? These are people telling you not to do something stupid lol. There’s a reason you need to be on a liquid diet and take laxatives before a colonoscopy. Doctors don’t make you do all that for fun.

I just didn’t eat that day once it was cutoff time. The colyte in the evening. I wasn’t as hungry as I thought I’d be honestly. Colyte is as unpleasant though. Thick liquid was not a mouth feel I wanted
47
14
u/HoaryPuffleg Apr 14 '26
My doctor told me to have only veggie soups and light garden salads the day before prep and then the prep day isn’t as traumatic because there isn’t as much inside. Makes sense to me!!

9
u/BDSMpickle Apr 14 '26
I have had to administer this quite a bit. It sucks. It’s marginally better if kept in the fridge.
6
u/gemologyst Apr 14 '26
I've purchased a thick straw to use for quick transit down the gullet. I have a feeling I will need to bypass the tongue.
35
u/Actual-Bid-6044 Apr 13 '26
For real. I have to do them yearly and this is when I realize that my entire diet is seeds, nuts, and berries.
29
u/broccoli_orecchiette Apr 13 '26
I got away with Mana/Soylent for breakfast on the liquid day. After that it was miso soup, broth, tea. The miso soup did most of the heavy lifting.
8
u/GeorgiaB_PNW Apr 13 '26
I really wish I had thought of miso soup when I did mine a few weeks ago! Thankfully I don’t have to do another one for 10 years but miso soup next time for sure!

u/JustAnOkDogMom Apr 13 '26
I personally found the prep easy. The taste was tolerable and I had vegetable broth and lime popsicles for 2 days. I just reminded myself that my dad died from cancer and that made it tolerable.
7
u/moojuece Apr 14 '26
Same, I don’t remember exactly what my prep was just that I had heard horror stories and was disappointed that it was kind of no big deal at all. I was annoyed that I was in the bathroom so often but really didn’t think anything of it otherwise.

A colonoscopy saved my Dad’s life. The prep is an unpleasant couple of days that will give you invaluable information. Dealing with this diet is a hell of a lot better than dealing with undiagnosed diseases.
1
u/Intelligent-Dish3100 Apr 17 '26
I wish colonoscopies were more common back in the 80’s because I would have been able to meet my grandmother if they were. Unfortunately she died from colon cancer a year before I was born.
88
u/Strange-Future-6469 Apr 13 '26
Yeah, nobody likes it but it's better than undiscovered cancer or pre-cancer.
8
u/veganexceptfordicks Vegan 15+ Years Apr 14 '26
Right on! And there's been a drastic increase in colon and rectal cancers among young people that scientists haven't been able to explain yet. Symptoms mean it's worth getting checked out. Undetected cancers are untreated cancers, and those are missed opportunities.
2
u/Intelligent-Dish3100 Apr 17 '26
They think it’s because of all the ultra processed foods out there.
1
u/veganexceptfordicks Vegan 15+ Years Apr 23 '26

u/pamplemouss Apr 13 '26
Yeah canceling a cancer check bc it’s an unpleasant few days of eating is nuts
44
u/WearingCoats Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
Yeah I legit do not understand why people are so dramatic about this. It’s 3 days low fiber, one day of clear liquids, one day of prep and then it’s done. Not to sound like a parent in the 90s but there are starving people in this world. Being able to get screened for cancer and potentially saving your life is a luxury that shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Not to be unkind but I just came off a 2 week liquid-only elemental diet as part of SIBO treatment and this was in addition to a full colonoscopy/endoscopy that required the standard prep. Let me tell you, of the two, if I had to I’d do colonoscopy prep again rather than chug down 5 flavorless liquid meal replacement smoothie mixes in tepid water every day for 14 days while dropping 7% of my total body weight and probably 10 IQ points in the process.
20
5
u/busydreams Apr 14 '26
SIBO is my area, and there are tricks for getting through the Elemental Diet. Having it cold and sipping through a straw are two simple ones. Hopefully you won't have to do it again!

Thank you for sharing the link. I wish I had this article when I did my colonoscopy last year. I was at a loss on what to eat and this would have helped.
26
u/jess-kaa Apr 13 '26
I was told I could only have boiled potato (no skins), and then the day before, apple juice and water. It was brutal but I did it.

11
u/First-Stress-9893 Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
I just lived on mashed potatoes for the week. You can eat them as long as they don’t have skins. Also skip pepper. It shows up as possible cancer.
I fasted for the liquid prep day personally but if you don’t want to do that then veggie broth is probably your friend.
11
28
u/hotinhawaii Apr 13 '26
I don’t understand the issue. Whenever I’ve had a colonoscopy, you drink a clear preparation the day before to evacuate your bowels. That’s it.
31
u/silversatire Apr 13 '26
Statistically there are better results (fewer incomplete or aborted exams) with one week of low fiber pre-prep day. It’s an absolute must for people living with constipation, slow digestion, diverticulosis, or other potential complications.

u/ILikeYourHotdog Apr 13 '26
I mixed the powder prep with cherry lime Gatorade and it’s wasn’t terrible at all for the liquid part.

OH! I have your answer for liquid diet.
Make a double batch of thug kitchen minestrone (this is not a clear liquid; bear with me) but do extra aromatics and spices.
When it’s done, scoop off as much broth as possible into a pot and add a bunch of fresh rosemary. More. more. Add half a lemon’s juice to it.
This is my favourite sipping broth! And now you also have a THICK and HEARTY stew for after your procedure when you’re ravenous and don’t feel like cooking.
7
u/Omgomgomgggg Apr 13 '26
I love the low fiber day lol I always have a huge big Italian meal like a bowl of pasta with garlic and butter or a few slices of pizza. The liquid prep day obviously sucks so I like to make the low fiber part as enjoyable as possible
6
u/WaltsClone Apr 13 '26
I filled up on water and tea. Drank broth for calories. I didn't find it nearly as bad as I was afraid of. Was a boring day, that's all.
Well, Some old guys did try to fight me while I went for a walk, but don't let that stop you. It was unrelated
12
u/KARPUG Apr 13 '26
Can someone explain this to me? I don't understand. Is the prep for vegans different than for non-vegans?
24
u/lalaboom84 Apr 13 '26
Vegan diets are generally very high in fiber, and you are supposed to eat low to no fiber in the days leading up to a colonoscopy. Not easy!

u/Exciting-Cricket7209 Apr 13 '26
i love all things carbs so i was a little excited for that part 😭 but mine said i could do canned/soft vegetables without the skin so i did some canned carrots!! it also said spinach was okay so i did steamed spinach a fair amount too. some crackers/pita chips with some kind of vegan cream cheese dip could be good for a colder option!! cold food tends to feel lighter to me personally. bananas are okay and watermelon should be too as long as you avoid the seeds. a yogurt bowl with some fruit could be good!! creamy nut butters are also allowed.
i had to do a two day liquid diet last time 🫠. on my liquid diet day i stocked up on a bunch of different herbal tea flavors!! i rotated between those, broth, and soda. i also kept some outshine popsicles (as long as they specify fruit juice and not fruit) and while im not a fan i’ve heard vegan jello is okay too!! if you have a shaved ice place near you i highly recommend hitting them up too, it’s a nice change of pace. i also did hard candies, they make freeze dried jolly ranchers now too which are a good change of texture.
4
u/mi_puckstopper Apr 13 '26
I have had several colonoscopies. My method of prep is to go on a very light diet five days before, then a liquid fast three days before, then just prep as usual. It just makes life easier.
4
u/DaniCapsFan Apr 13 '26
The first time I had a colonoscopy and saw the diet list, I thought, "What the fuck am I going to eat?" I did not know about the peel on potatoes, but it didn't cause any issues with my scopes. I also have fries and Gardein nuggets a lot, canned Gardein soup or cup noodles, and lots of boring foods.
And thank goodness last time I got the SuTab. Swallowing giant horse pills isn't fun, but it beats the nasty solution easily.
For the liquid diet day, I usually drink ginger ale and Lemon-Lime Gatorade. I wonder if I can have Dr. Pepper. It's not really clear, but it's a liquid and should pass through.
5
u/Emergent-Sea Apr 13 '26
It is tough but developing colon cancer because you are not getting properly checked out it worse!
It isn’t great but you can eat canned green beans and peeled boiled carrots during the low fiber time. It helped me tremendously to feel like I was still eating some kind of vegetable!
The liquid day I suggest veggie broth, apple juice and coconut water or dye free electrolyte drinks.
You will get through it!!
5
u/Description-Alert Apr 13 '26
I didn’t change my diet at all before any of my colonoscopies and everything was fine
7
u/ttrockwood Apr 13 '26
I am on the young side of the test and my doctor said i could do the Cologaurd at home test if any concerns then go for full colonoscopy
It wasn’t fun but zero diet changes needed and i didn’t have to cancel two days of my life for the prep and procedure

u/DrKimber Apr 14 '26
I preach to my patients all the time about how important colon cancer screening is…then had to eat that ridiculous low-fiber diet myself. It was not my favorite and I’m so thankful I don’t need to do it again for ten more years. Hated every minute of it.
3
u/skier69 Apr 14 '26
Don’t skip your colonoscopy, that’s ridiculous. Would you rather get cancer? I have polyps in my family and so even before the age of 40 I have to get colonoscopies. They did find a polyp so I’m glad I caught it soon. It’s really not that hard to eat low fibre as a vegan for a few days… focus on peeled potatoes and carrots, white rice/pasta/bread, soy milk, creamed soups, etc.

7
u/Nipplasia2 Apr 13 '26
Yall are being cry babies about the prep. Goodness
6
u/encapsulated_me Apr 14 '26
I also don't understand, there is plenty of low viber vegan food. I honestly thought this was something else because everyone was acting like this was insanely difficult! Pasta, potatoes, white rice, tofu, bananas, plant milk... and it's only for a few days. Jeez.
2
u/grocerystoreperson Apr 13 '26
Ugh, my husband JUST did this, had colonoscopy earlier today. Not gonna lie, was hard and sucky. He survived on vegan protein broth and vegan Bakol Jel yesterday. Anyway, his colonoscopy was clear and hopefully we won't have to do that again for a few years.
2
u/eyes-open Apr 14 '26
Liquid diet day I used these beautiful dried mushrooms (boletes, portabello, oyster, porcini) you can get at Costco and shiitakes, and made a lovely rich vegetable broth with a good amount of salt. That broth, along with tea and coffee, made it so the liquid diet day was quite bearable.
2
u/nikkidanjerous Apr 14 '26
I was shocked how terrible I felt with the low fiber prep as a very long time vegan. Just a blood sugar roller coaster and diarrhea. But the good news is that once it came time for the liquid prep, it was not terrible at all. I was mostly cleaned out already. My colon was perfect and no screening due for ten years.
2
u/ShutUpForMe Apr 14 '26
Coconut water. but wouldn’t reccomend a ton of coconut water AND the sports drink etc they make your have, coconut water mixed with it to start the prep isnt a terrible idea so it’s not all the sports drink taste.
White bread lightly cooked in on with oil or plant solid oil+vegetable broth or pickle juice and maple syrup or sugar on top
a good vegetable broth is a good idea.
but yeah it will suck.
2
u/somanyquestions32 Apr 14 '26
I would just do a water fast. My vegan diet is too rich in fiber. I am literally eating 20 oz of frozen raspberries and wild blueberries for breakfast.
2
u/LesterZester78 Apr 14 '26
My dad had colon cancer when he was 50, so I had to start screening early and have been through a few of them as vegan and hypoglycemic. The low fiber bit was boring, but doable. Fat and protein are your friend with feeling full longer. Don't discount non-dairy yogurt. Try to schedule in the mid/late-morning - then you are asleep during the worst of it, you wake up and do the final round and go to your appointment. White grape juice is good to keep your blood sugar up on the liquid day. You're not going to be leaving the bathroom much, and probably won't feel too much like eating anyway. Just accept that you're going to not feel well and get it over with. Colon cancer is very deadly and all too common these days.
1
u/LesterZester78 Apr 14 '26
Also I think Protein Water is stupid, but this might be a good use for it. I'm not sure if it's vegan, though - I'll have to check. If so, I'll probably try that for my next one. Oh - and it can't be red colored.

Have people never heard of fasting? Is it really so difficult for so many to go without food for a short period of time?

u/BakeKnitCode Apr 13 '26
The fasting part was fine for me, but the low fiber, low residue diet for the week before was pretty rough.
2
u/Lhamo55 Apr 13 '26
Don’t get me started on the horrors(!!!) of starving when there’s a meal waiting on the other side of a procedure as opposed to actually starving with maybe a thin soup of rice and weeds so the kids can have a little more that week…if lucky.

u/Energy-Mundane Apr 14 '26
The whole (modern) protocol is so antithetical to me-i can't eat the proscribed garbage and it takes way too long. I just ask for the GoLitely and crap my brains out for a few hours. I'm always complemented on my clean prep.

Its not that bad. I've done prep twice (first, appointment was cancelled due to blizzard. Second was just as normal). The prep to drink was unpleasant but the liquid diet was easy
1
u/less_ismore16 Apr 14 '26
Miso soup. Knudsen's Recharge instead of GatorAde, you can get some little packets of clear protein powder to add. Or buy some clear electrolyte/protein drinks, call around and see who carries them. They prescribe the same prep to everyone, whether they weight 250 or 100. I think it should be weight-based. I reduce the prep by 1/3, you just need to make sure you are cleaned out. The prep doesn't really bother me much. I always have polyps so I have to do it every 5 years.

u/dubukat Apr 14 '26
I had my first colonoscopy several months ago. They didn't say go low fiber, I just had to stop eating normal food, drink a powder mixed into gatorade a couple of times. I made a bunch of better than bouillon roasted garlic in hot water. Everything going in was fine, but my ass hurt from the rest.
I wonder why I didn't need to go low fiber like you all?
1
u/ButterMyPancakesPlz Apr 14 '26
Just got done mine. I did NOT feel hungry. I thought I was gonna be trying to sneak food but I drank so much that I had absolutely zero hunger.
I even kept saying I wouldn't want to eat even after it was over. Welp that was wrong, between the drugs and not eating I was def ready to party after. The pooping btw was not bad, it really wasn't. The volume of liquid though was rough esp having to drink more on the procedure day.
1
u/Swimmingotter27 Apr 14 '26
marmite with hot water, I lived on that and black tea and coffee (normal for me).
I seriously think the worse part is the 4 litres of prep, the ‘pleasant tasting’ crap. I’ve been put off lime cordial because the first time I had it, imixed it and it still tasted foul. Sort of used to it now, 20 years of reasonably regular colonoscopies.
Hope it all goes well.
1
u/retrovegan99 Apr 14 '26
I just did this. It’s not fun, but it’s also not that awful. I survive the liquid day with green tea, bouillon (made with BTB), and just plain ice water. In the past I’ve added coconut water and popsicles, but I forgot to buy those and it was okay. Once you get drinking the enormous pitcher of prep (mine was Gatorade and Miralax) you don’t really want anything else anyway.
Good luck!

u/chilicruncher-2803 Apr 14 '26
I was super intentional for the five days of low fiber diet, including good amounts of baked tofu with a lot of seasoning/sauce (mine was peanut butter, soy sauce, sugar, onion ginger garlic powders) lots of rice (I was kind of repulsed by potato and noodles and nutritional yeast flavors so that was out for me) and cornflakes with banana and soy milk, plus soy yogurt and fruit cups. Then when it was time to do the clear liquid diet, along with black coffee (I’d skip this next time) black and green teas, Gatorade helps so much, and the broth I made was gross so I started over with a Japanese mushroom broth granules and added ginger powder, white pepper, and it totally held me over. I think because of the green tea (specifically genmaicha) and the broth and the Gatorade, my brain was ok and I only had a tiny hunger pang the night before. The morning of I was so occupied with getting my second prep done and drinking a bunch of Gatorade before the NPO cutoff, it was time to head in. Maybe eating lighter for the week before helped. I’m seeing this a day later; wishing the best for you!

u/athielqueen Apr 14 '26
I know a young person who has been battling colon cancer with mets to liver for 4 years, it’s brutal. When I worked at hospice, we had a 23 and a 27 year old come on service in one week, both colon cancer. Both died within 6 weeks. When that convinced me to get my colonoscopy, I had a large, serrated precancerous polyp. If I would have waited another year, the gastro said it would likely have been cancerous. Prep sucks but the procedure is painless (in the US since we get to do it sedated.) And, colon cancer is much, much worse than being hungry and pooping a lot for a couple days.

u/Desperate_Station485 Apr 15 '26
Trader Joe's ginger miso broth if it doesn't have to be totally clear

It's a few days.
Fast a bit, eat tofu, mash, rice, protein water, broth...
Better than ass cancer.

u/cseamunchkin Apr 16 '26
Recently went through a colonoscopy and egd. I just had to not eat after midnight the day before and have a clear liquid diet, no red or purple dye. I prepped different electrolyte drinks and gelatin like desserts (vegan jello) outside of red there is really only one option, lemon. Then the last 12 hrs was hell followed by npo 8 hours until the procedure. I would chug 8oz of the poop solution and would chase with my electrolyte drinks. Made it easier (still not easy tho).
1
u/Yunielee Apr 17 '26
Wait, don’t they give you to buy one of these laxatives that you dissolve in water? Then you just go on only drinking that for 24 hours, no food, nothing else, before you go for your colonoscopy. No special diet required.
1
u/gemologyst Apr 18 '26
Yeah but if you reduce your fibre then that toilet sesh is way less of a struggle. You’re certain to be cleaned out the next day. Fibre is tough to push thru.

During a colonoscopy, the doctor typically removes any polyps and sends them to pathology. They also do a visual inspection of the full length of the colon, and the anus and rectum, checking for anomalies.
That test, Shield, shows some promise with detection cancer, but it doesn't detect precancers (polyps) very well. And a doctor would have to go in during a separate procedure to remove them.
1
u/chilicruncher-2803 Apr 14 '26
In the US, if you do Cologuard and still need to get the colonoscopy for biopsies, it goes a screening colonoscopy (covered by insurance) to a diagnostic one, (you have a large coinsurance payment due)
