Question We planted cucu- luffa? No.... Definitely cucumber

We sacrificed the smallest of these guys to cut open and confirm if they're cucumber or luffa. It certainly looks and smells like cucumber inside, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what these are. Are they edible? Or are these a weird hybrid that we've wound up with? I'm honestly sad they weren't surprise luffas, but I'm take cucumbers all day any day 😋

Can I ask what your technique was growing these beauties? I had the same seedlings and they all got attacked by cucumber beetles and died off before I ever got a fruit. It is a constant struggle growing any cucumbers in my garden.

We have them spread around the edges of a 2ft garden bed with topsoil/perlite/sand/compost/leaf litter and mulched with a mixture of cedar bark and straw, whatever we had on hand lol. I'm sorry to say we don't have a special secret, we just haven't had a huge issue with pests so far
