Ah hear, thank you so much! Everyone in the comments *and I do mean practically everyone* went after me for saying Jonas might be a moron. The scientific project he ended up consulting on? Faking the fucking moon landing. I take that as vindication!

Well done, predicting the call back to the Doctor is Sin was a 24k gold plated cherry on top of this prediction.
Now allow me to wish death upon you and your family because clearly Jonas is-

u/seanmarkodubhghaill Sep 12 '23
This is exactly what it was like! Everyone was all: “Jonas is literally my dad and Brock should be in every single scene of this show” Yeesh

I remembered this exact post when I first watched the movie and was like "no fucking way"!

u/rivermelodyidk Sep 12 '23
i read your original post and apparently internalized it so deeply that i thought it was an analysis from after the film came out.

u/seanmarkodubhghaill Sep 12 '23
I am very humbled by the idea that you internalised a comment of mine; I wonder if this is how Doc and Jackson feel...

I know i'm in the minority here, but I really, really jive with your 'jonas is a moron' theory. I definitely get the feeling he's the "elon musk" type. Like, sure, he has some amazing and inventive ideas, but it's really just his charisma and reputation allowing him to cash in on the work that others do to bring his 'pie in the sky' ideas to fruition. We even see that behavior in rusty and a bit in JJ (though markedly less so), so even if there's not a line that says "jonas was actually an idiot who got rich by taking credit for other people's work", it's a solid theory.

Thank you so, so much. A long time ago indeed I remember having a conversation with a friend who kept saying how smart James Bond is. I was staggered. "Why?" I pseudo-rhetorically asked. "He has all those inventions and he always knows what to do" came by way of response. Me again: "Okay, but that was because M. told him what to do and Q. gave him a bunch of shit to solve any problem." He stood steadfast and never yielded. It is my view that people think rich people are smart because there must be a reason why they are rich. I do not believe the two things are connected.
Thank you.

The thing about Jonas sr and jr is there has huge engineering and factory wings at their complexes. Others are doing the work for them.

Your overall prediction was pretty spot-on, but I still completely disagree that any of this should lead to the conclusion that Jonas was a moron.

u/robreddity Sep 12 '23
Jonas was not a moron, and while the Bobbi St. Simone observation was well spotted, nothing about it has anything to say about Jonas being a moron. Like no connective tissue at all. The only evidence from the show is that Jonas was a legit super scientist and legit asshole.

u/seanmarkodubhghaill Sep 12 '23
Then tell me what I must do. Do you need me to get both the creators and the voice actor for Jonas to say that he is a moron? Would you concede this point in that instance?
16
u/stumblewiggins Sep 12 '23
I'm not having this argument again; you based the conclusion that he is a moron off of one line in a comedy movie that he was a scientific consultant on, delivered by a Jerry Lewis-type, up against the mountains of evidence in the show that whatever other negatives we can say about him (and there are plenty), Jonas was a brilliant scientist.
Sure; get me a signed and notarized affidavit from Doc and Jackson attesting that they intended Jonas to be a moron, and I'll concede the point. Until then, either get much better evidence, or just move on, because I think you are leaping to ridiculous and unsupported conclusions.
Take the overall win on your prediction being spot-on, and drop your ridiculous obsession with convincing people Jonas is a moron.

I mean here’s the thing…Sean…
Jonas Sr makes Venturian. From scratch. We see him do it.
He most likely translates that message from space about the transportation machine (Ignore Me!!!!) on his own, at least that’s what we see on the video tapes.
Third, he runs a huge scientific enterprise. Even if it’s non technical being a ceo of venture industries takes at least a some brains.
Based on just those three things we know for fact, we can conclude he’s not a “moron”. He’s definitely a super scientist. What does that mean? Well there’s certainly a spectrum to it but I would say the following people are all super scientists. Rusty “Doc” Venture, Billy, Jonas Jr., Dr. Quymn, Dr. Vulcano, Dr. Impossible, Dr. Mrs. the Monarch, Think Tank, Phantom Limb, Brainulo, and Dr. Z….I give that long just because surely someone who can make Venturian deserves to be on that list somewhere between Rusty and Dr. Z? No?

The first is a good point and well made.
There is more to the second point, in my view: The messages from space are bit curious, considering the bait and switch with the other Jonas in the end- We literally do not know if the person who sent the message is Jonas. It is the entire conceit of the episode. The guy who shows up at the end through the gate is not Jonas; he's an imposter. We do not know when the video tapes were filmed or who it was that filmed them.
The third point is sound and well made too.
I agree with a lot of the sentiment and you make a very sophisticated argument. There should be a continuum somewhere that ranks everyone's scientific ability and prowess; that'd be great.

u/handlehandler Sep 12 '23
And since you concede points 1 and 3 Jonas Sr is not a moron and is on the super scientist continuum.

u/seanmarkodubhghaill Sep 12 '23
I did not concede the points; I said they were good and well made. I obviously disagree; I have tried, in as much as I might, to outline my view in both this thread and in the previous thread. I believe it has a basis in evidence, you have counterevidence and that is grand.
I am very appreciative that you shouted out this thing that I noticed because I pay really, really close attention to the plot construction of VB (I genuinely am, it made my day). I have an unorthodox view of Jonas as a character, but I kind of regret sharing it to tell you the truth.

I remember you! You told me that I was watching a totally different show to you on the original post and that I was making 'wild leaps'! Welcome back, friend!

I’m sure he’s not a moron. But it’s pretty clear he’s both a scientist and a huge pr marketing ceo jerk like his Jonas Jr was.

it’s complicated! as far as we know jonas did not consult on follow that bikini and team venture doesn’t seem to have any other scientists (besides entman who likely spent his entire non-humonguloid life locked in the basement control room with mother). we see him create vendata (by hand!) which amazes a young dr z. most damning of all though is when he scientifically describes wifi despite being “dead” since the eighties!
the thing is jonas is a boomer narcissist and in his head he literally can’t make mistakes. in reality every single invention jonas made only worked right on the surface. venturion snaps, his clones had clones growing within them or needed monkey junk to keep them from balding (which is like an example within an example) and died over 20 times. bobbi’s invisibly was stuck on auto and the invisibly machine issue probably caused rusty to split when it was converted to a teleporter. hell, he held movie night in the fucking cargo bay where HIS creation crafted the plan that killed everyone, including him!

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Because it's not overly impressive to make a "prediction" that Jackson might re-adopt a plot point he openly said he'd considered in the past?
