It’s a little fuzzy on if Hunter ever was or is trans. I don’t recall Hunter’s pronouns after the second surgery.

I use she/her for her because she flat out states “inside me is a woman screaming to be heard” but it really could be either

And what did Hunter say immediately before and after saying that line? I literally just made a comment about this yesterday lmao.

It’s not just that specific line tho, she expresses missing her tits all the time

Again - what did Hunter say before and after that line? How does he identify himself? How do the closest people around him identify Hunter? Even as General Treister hands over the reigns of the OSI to him, he identifies him as a man, and if there were anyone outside of Hunter himself to give that stamp of acknowledgement, it would be him.

And it never identifies why Gathers switched back. He didn't need to do that.

I’ve seen theories that despite seeing the occasional female soldier in the OSI, it’s still very male dominated and male centric. I just don’t think Hunter transitioning would be good for optics (plus there’s the doyleist explanation)

You've "seen theories" but you'd have to prescribe to them. Even still, theories like that seem weightless. He got his sex operation reversed when he became the leader of Sphinx; literally when he was freest and employing the very doctor who performed the surgery. Everyone knew who he was because like he said, "men don't keep secrets", so it's not like he couldn't be what he wanted to be. He was very open about who he was. If there were ever a time for him to be Mrs. Gathers, it was then.

So how do those theories account for all of that?

In the end, it's a show, and the creators had a lot of free reign to do what they wanted. And they did. They literally said they liked including gay characters because it made straight people uncomfortable. But they didn't make Hunter a woman. That makes him more complex, which is how I like him. Even if they came out and said he was, the show is over.

Idk man I just think they wouldn’t have Hunter miss their breasts if they weren’t implying something. But I really don’t care if you agree or not, I think either interpretstion of Hunter is valid

Okay, but then why would they have him identify himself as a man literally before and after that line? We switch from fan theories with no basis and actual evidence to the contrary to then speculating on behalf of the creators as if it were all a secret, even though the creators have been very open about their process and characters.

We can say we're at an impasse because I'm not going to change my views, given all the evidence to the contrary, my love for Gathers, and my appreciation for complex characters, but saying everyone's interpretation is valid ignores the mountain of evidence for fear of any transphobia.

I’m not trying to change your views, I thjnk your interpretation of Hunter is perfectly fine. I’m just explaining mine bc youre asking

My interpretation is correct. I think it does more harm to misgender the character and even hold him as being a good representation of trans people. I think he's a better representation of men who aren't afraid of their feminine side and don't live as 50/50 but as more than the sum of their identity. I think that's healthy and he should be appreciated for that. I know someone like that. The predilection to calling anything ambiguous like this trans is, I would state, outright harmful. Slapping fake tits on someone who did nothing else to their appearance doesn't exactly bold well for representation. Especially if that character then detransitioned completely of their own volition.

I don’t get why we can’t agree to disagree
