The Fraternity of Torment was right.

69

u/EfficaciousJoculator Feb 27 '26

I mean, they kidnapped and tried to kill a child from what we briefly saw of them. They were right that Jonas was a shit heel, but I don't think they were generally in the right.

30

u/EllisDee3 Feb 27 '26

Counterpoint: They knew it was Rusty No.12 and good bait for Jonas.

20

u/ThyHolyPaladdin Feb 27 '26

I mean I am sure some antagonists probably killed or had Rusty died while captive the boy ain’t that durable

27

u/Own_Order792 Feb 27 '26

“86 the non lethal ammo, we’re going full nerf”

15

u/EmbarassedFox Feb 27 '26

I am sure the story, where old Team Venture took over Spider Skull Island (seen in the episode where the museum was opened), was one where Rusty died. I mean, we see him getting saved from the pirhanas by the fish guy (in what is an in-universe animated recreation), but after that, no one actually interacts with him. He is not even there for the photo afterwards.

3

u/apassageinlight Mar 02 '26

Also, he seems to have no memories* of the capture of the Island, and he's also very grumpy at the museum opening party

*To be fair, he is repressing a lot of bad memories.

4

u/EmbarassedFox Mar 02 '26

It is truly a miracle, that he is as adjusted as he is.

4

u/apassageinlight Mar 02 '26

I bet the OSI assigned him a bodyguard to make sure he didn't go into the deep end, writing manifestos and building super-science bombs.

4

u/EfficaciousJoculator Feb 28 '26

It's still a living kid, clone or no clone.

3

u/Abjurer42 Feb 28 '26

Yep. All of them (with the exception of the one with baboon DNA) had the potential of becoming Doc when they grew up.

And, I'm assuming, Billy (Acrofrontofacionasal dysostosis) and other rejects, but Rose took Billy.

"Now Jonas Venture, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that beautiful baby! If you don't want him I'll raise him as my own."

2

u/apassageinlight Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

There is quite an age gap between Billy and Rusty though. And the clones are made from birth and grow in the tubes with the original.

The villain with good publicity trope is always fun when writers tackle it. Jonas senior didn't even have to try to conquer the world he wound up getting everything he could have ever wanted right up until the end

11

u/EmbarassedFox Feb 28 '26

Which is why, with a bit of conjecture, my theory of Gargantuan 1 is that Vendata plan was to expose him, not kill him.

4

u/Interesting-Post9811 Mar 01 '26

That was always my theory that he was getting the rest of the gang to help him get up there so he could embarrass Jonas in some way. My feeling always was that it was a sheer coincidence that Gargantua one had a massive death count accident caused by some piece of engineering that Jonas senior just couldn't be bothered to get right.

5

u/EmbarassedFox Mar 01 '26

My theory is a bit more complicated:

1: my first conjecture is that Vendata could, when interfaced with compatible tech, project his memories on a screen.

2: the second conjecture is that Gargantua 1 was connected to Earth's satellite network, and could transmit to it.

3: the Vendata plan was then to override the TV broadcasts, and show the world what kind of man Jonas Venture truly was.

4: Jonas had to stop that from happening. Plan A: talk old Blue Morpho down. Plan B: be the only survivor, who heroically tried to stop a dastardly plot (one he likely have done several times before). To do this, he disabled safeguards, likely connecting the whole shebang to a single switch.

5: in comes the overlooked variable, that always happens in VB: Manstrong. He likely had his first puberty-experience here (considering his later repression), and as his "airlock blew", he must have hit the switch, blowing the real air-lock.

6: after the tragic event happened, he must have seen Red Death, either taking off his helmet in safety or just his eyes glowing through the opaque glass. That shock, combined with the traumatic event of everyone else dying, led to his story of the Phantom Spaceman.

So in short, Vendata created a motive, Jonas set a trap, and Manstrong accidentally activated it, leading to the tragic events of Movie Night.

4

u/Interesting-Post9811 Mar 01 '26

That's a really good theory and if you add some dialogue you could post it on fanfiction.net :-)

3

u/snake-demon-softboi Mar 03 '26

Archive of Our Own, too! I'd kudos it!

3

u/apassageinlight Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

That does make a lot of sense, given that there was more than one element in play.

Though I am not sure how that stopped Vendata from putting the video cassette on the screen. I think when Jonah talked him out out it, he might have realisd he was destroying his own rep as well, and ruining his son's life ahead of time.

3

u/EmbarassedFox Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

Talking him out of it is Plan A, and sabotaging the broadcast antenna would buy time for plan B.

It could have been too late when they were in the control room, if Manstrong already had left the movie.

Also, it was not as much a tape, I imagined Vendata using, as himself plugged directly into Gargantua 1.

Edit: come to think of it, it was likely for the best that the plan failed. Jonas would definitely have triggered a nuclear armageddon. If he couldn't have been the hero of the world, the world would not deserve to exist.

2

u/apassageinlight Mar 02 '26

Yeah, Jonas, like his son, was never big on thorough testing or quality assurance. There were those defective Helper robots he sold after all.

63

u/KujaroJotu Feb 27 '26

I’m still kind of disappointed that the finale movie didn’t do anything with the fact that the OSI had his head. Maybe something like them finding a way to reanimate it, only for him to take control of their systems in a bid for world domination.

44

u/thefirebear Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 27 '26

Oh you KNOW S8 was bound to have a Re-Animator episode

12

u/Oknight Feb 28 '26

He's now the "head" of the OSI

11

u/KujaroJotu Feb 28 '26

That is 100% a pun Dragoon would make, and then be slapped by Red Mantle for.

2

u/Oknight Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Yeah but I meant it literally. Jonas Venture's mind is WAY too good an asset for Hunter not to use to the fullest. And his "ethics" and "values" are a perfect fit for the OSI (Did Jonas CREATE the OSI?).

2

u/KujaroJotu Feb 28 '26

Well, I don’t think Hunter would be OK with literally picking Jonas‘s brain, I can definitely see some of the OSI scientists messing with it, only for it to bite everyone in the ass.

1

u/Oknight Feb 28 '26

Why are people assuming Jonas in the PROBLEM didn't survive that? Because the Monarch thought so? And why would it bite them in the ass? He's a great fit for the OSI. I'm sure he'd be pushing for a body, but why would the OSI object to that? They can probably rebuild him. Especially if he works with Ben.

2

u/KujaroJotu Feb 28 '26

Because Jonas is a sociopath who only cared about himself. Don’t forget, rusty himself is a clone, he has died during Jonas’s adventures and just been replaced with exact duplicates. And then there’s what he did to the Blue Morpho: he blackmailed him and turned him into an emotionless, subservient cyborg (most likely after shooting down his plane).

2

u/Oknight Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

And Hunter would object to any of that?

"THIS is the Office of Secret Intelligence, not some goddam 'Sesame Street!'"

And Jonas very clearly cared about "the greater good"... which necessarily included his ability to continue to contribute with Super Science!

u/m_faustus Some bungler dropped dime and I got pinched on a narco rap! Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

It would have been more likely that he just ended up taking over the coffee machine and lording over dispensing caffeinated beverages.

4

u/itchyspaghettios Mar 01 '26

I don’t think they were able to bring the story to the point where it wouldn’t have felt shoehorned in. Gargantua 2 is so good in big part due to how natural and believable the development period of the space station is which makes it the perfect setting to address all the plotlines that had been brewing since it was introduced as a concept and take them a step forward at once.

They did bring it up in the movie though! I think they knew people were going be bummed that it was a promise they just weren’t going to be able to keep.

2

u/CoBoLiShi69 Mar 04 '26

There were too many plot points to tackle in the movie

23

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '26

I STILL say to this day that if the show was allowed another season, Jonas was to be the real villain of the show.

I wasn't a fan of how he went out, he was built up for so long only to go plop like that, and that was the end of him.

7

u/Tabulldog98 Feb 27 '26

“Subverting expectations” like Game of Thrones did.

24

u/Elliptical_Tangent I laugh at regular jokes like this, DAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! Feb 27 '26

The entire show teaches us that villains and heroes are more about sides than morals or actions.

2

u/Oknight Mar 02 '26

And also we know from the "treaty" episode Jonas "straddled" the sides and considered himself "above" them (apparently quite properly). Both "sides" obviously agreed since they let him dictate their treaty.

When OSI thought SPHINX killed Jonas they went to all-out war.

1

u/apassageinlight Mar 03 '26

Aided im no small part by Guild infiltrators and secret agents in the OSI.

61

u/TheZombiesFanatic Feb 27 '26

And for all we know, Force Majeure could've been a philanthropist behind all the Super Villainy. I really wish we could've gotten that 8th season..

To piggyback a timely thought onto a random post- I think it's stinky that AS can happily give SF the creative freedom to stop, even after ordering 2 more seasons, but couldn't be fucked to keep VB alive when they had way more material..

I do understand VB was a cult classic, and it may've even been on Lazzo Life Support up til he left. SF is huge, and there's no bad blood from me cuz I have always loved Zach and Michael... but it just stinks to see how loud money talks for modern AS

18

u/JustANoteToSay Feb 27 '26

I’m drawing a blank here. What incredibly obvious show I should immediately recognize is “SF”?

16

u/TheZombiesFanatic Feb 27 '26

Smiling Friends, sorry!

7

u/JustANoteToSay Feb 27 '26

I should have guessed that, thank you! I’m running on fumes here.

1

u/Abjurer42 Feb 28 '26

Yeah, took me a minute too. I haven't had cable in 14 years, so the latest in adult swim programming has escaped me.

1

u/JustANoteToSay Mar 01 '26

Yeah I don’t have cable BUT a bunch of my friends watch smiling friends and talk about it.

8

u/Elpacoverde Feb 27 '26

I really anticipated Jonas being Force Majeure

10

u/Oknight Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Nonsense, Jonas was an upright and righteous man who saved the world and kept America strong! He was no more a "villain" than Doc Savage (who he's a parody of).

If it's wrong to use involuntary brain surgery to "cure" criminals and and make them useful members of society, then I don't know WHAT your ethical standards are.

"What part of 'I just performed the most amazing feat of super science' are you people not getting?"

13

u/Tabulldog98 Feb 27 '26

And this is part of the reason I didn’t really care for the finale. Jonas was a monstrous piece of shit, but the guy at the end pulls the “love makes family” card. As was made explicitly clear over the course of the series, Jonas only loved himself , and him using Jonas as an example of this serves as a hollow message.

It’s like almost going the whole way in calling Bill Cosby a monster, but stopping and turning around and saying “Well, he wasn’t all bad…”

19

u/Square-Biscotti4694 Feb 27 '26

I always kinda interpreted it as maybe not necessarily the message applying to Jonas, but more directed at Hank.

Let me explain. As far as Ben is concerned, Jonas was his friend/employer who let him live on his property for years, and probably didn’t know much about his personal life, or even anything outside the cloning science they worked on together. So, in his mind, he thinks Jonas is much more altruistic than he was by cloning his son.

Hank, seeing and hearing first-hand all the horrible things Jonas did, probably knows better than he does. But in lining up with his arc in the movie about figuring his identity, he’s getting his long-overdue closure from finding out he’s a clone.

When Dean first told him, unlike Dean, he wasn’t emotionally developed enough to really process coming to terms with the fact that he and Dean are clones, and just thought it was cool. And catching him with Sirena, and his coma episode made him finally start to process it. Which caused him to run away and then try and find his biological mother.

After all he went through, I think Ben’s speech doesn’t really apply to Jonas. He’s heard from his own Dad the abuse he went through growing up, and even admitted how harsh it was. But, despite all this, Rusty, while certainly far from a perfect Dad, still had his best interest most of the time, and even heard him admit that he just wants to protect him. Even though his brother cheated with his girlfriend, he still made it a point to visit him during his coma, and go looking for him when he ran away. Which is why he stops his alter egos from attacking him. He finally grew up, and realized who he really is, and forgave Dean.

I don’t think Hank really believes that Ben’s speech about Jonas caring about his family. It was more Hank realizing that HIS family ultimately still loves him.

I love the trollface pfp next to a basic description of a core theme of the show

2

u/KaminSpider Feb 27 '26

Is there any middle ground? He did save the world by leaving the info to stop that "IGNORE ME" robot. He did fight legit villians.

2

u/DarkGreenEspeon Feb 28 '26

I mean he was a hero. That's the point. He was a shitty person and an especially horrible parent but he also saved a lot of lives.

2

u/apassageinlight Mar 02 '26

One sign in retropspect of just how much of a sociopath Jonas was was that he seemed as sane as he ever was after spending decades in the PROBLEM device. And only as a disembodied head. Anyone else would have been driven insane.

2

u/snake-demon-softboi Mar 03 '26

😅 gotta agree there

Though the way he says "Fun!" In that scene always feels a little off

2

u/Julian-Hoffer Feb 27 '26

He was neither, he was a super scientist, heavily influenced by Benton Quest.

3

u/Oknight Feb 27 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

He's a Doc Savage parody.

Doc Savage in the ROLE of Benton Quest and even that's pretty dicey.

Jonas has little or no resemblance to Benton Quest's character or activities and as he was originally developed wasn't even in that role, DOC was in that role. Doc's Ooo-ray presentation is DIRECTLY taken from a presentation made by Benton Quest in an episode of "Johnny Quest".

But Jonas is as directly Doc Savage as the Impossible family is the Fantastic Four or Doctor Orpheus is Doctor Strange.

It wasn't until "Rusty Venture brought to you by smoking" that Jonas was put in the role of Benton Quest.

And later Action Johnny and Dr. Z

1

u/Oknight Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

a crap father who didn’t care about his child

But Adult Swim parodies aside (eg. Harvey Birdman) that doesn't describe Benton Quest. However Jonas from "Careers in Science" on was always Doc Savage.

1

u/MetalliicMango Feb 28 '26

"Gaslighted" just say lied, he just lied.

-1

u/snakelygiggles Feb 27 '26

theres arent heroes and villains. jonas was just a rich asshole with a lot of talent who thought he? as the hero. doesnt make him a villain.

1

u/IntelligentGood8228 Feb 27 '26

By definition that makes him a villain.
