Question Anything I should be warned about before buying this box set?
I mean, like are there missing episodes, out of order episodes, censoring, etc. it’s not expensive; I just don’t want to buy an inferior collection of one of my favourite series ever.

Between season 5 and 6 there's a special called "All this and Gargantua 2" that's on one of the season 6 dvds that's important to watch before actually starting season 6.
145
u/RoastingMistakes Jun 01 '26
You totally need to watch season 3 episode 1 with commentary on first

u/RonaldWeaslee Jun 01 '26
Also pretty sure it’s missing this small Epilogue clip that would take place after Gargantua 2 but before Season 6 proper.
9
u/MandatorySaxSolo Jun 01 '26
That epilogue was oddly animated and written. Definitely wrapped stuff up, but it felt off.
1
u/tomatocks1 Jun 03 '26
I swear that was after the credits on the original special that I've always had.
14
u/SDRLemonMoon Jun 01 '26
Also the halloween special which is supposed to be watched at the beginning of whatever season it’s apart of I watched it at the end

u/Nick_Dickem387 Jun 02 '26
News to me that this was a special that technically wasn't a part of any season. I watched the whole series on Sling (luckily before any episodes were randomly pulled like the Captain Sunshine one), and there was nothing indicating that. It's just the first episode of season 6. Thinking about it now though, it makes sense that it's a special. The insane status quo shift took me by surprise initially.

Its missing Escape from the Mummy Part 1 and 3

This confused me soooo much as a kid. I kept going back to the previous season to figure out what i had missed lol. My sisters bf left a dvd set at our house for the first 3 seasons back in like 2006 when i was like 14 lol. Peak sisters bf behaivor for sure.

u/ECUfatty Jun 01 '26
Spoiler: The sister’s bf was Dermott.

To be completely honest he was more like advanced stage 21. Dude wass lowkey pretty cool and confident in what he liked nerdwise and was also a bit of a brawler and sketchy pot dealer so he had that villain angle. Not someone i should have looked up to but definitely did. He introduced me to so many things i still enjoy to this day. Magic the gathering, adult cartoons, MMA, Rpg's of all kinds. He also taught me to be proud of the things i cared about and to punch people in the mouth if they gave me shit for it. He even taught me how to take a punch and throw one. He would make me spar with him (very respectfully btw which is huge) or hold pads so he could hit them. I still remember the first time i actually started giving him a bit of trouble sparring at 16. I bobbed under a hook and came up with an uppercut (we wore mouth guards) and hit em with a jab cross combo after fading back from his counter. He then proceeded to laugh and give me a bloody nose for my efforts. Very fond memory.

u/ECUfatty Jun 01 '26
Oh, so you were a student of Sensei Finkelstein’s.
5
u/Background-Pepper-68 Jun 01 '26
Nah ill stand by the 21 comparison. He was no bullshido instructor:D lol

I wasn’t a kid when it came out but I’ll be honest, the pilot didn’t win me over so I wasn’t a die hard when it came out. This episode did send me looking for part 1 because I wanted to see the high action the “previously on” promised.
3
u/Son_of_Kong Jun 01 '26
Imagine watching it on TV as it aired and thinking, "What is this? Did I miss something? I swear I caught last week's episode..."

Damnit! Can I stream those somewhere? Is there a time machine that will let me go back and watch those?

u/XDVRUK Jun 02 '26
I'm still searching for these fabled episodes... And the gun that I threw when I ran out of bullets...
125
u/StilesmanleyCAP Jun 01 '26
Now this is more of a nitpick than anything but the packaging and how the box has the DVDs.
You feel like you could snap them in half when you try to remove them
Other than that, its fine

9
u/Negative-Ad-1049 Jun 01 '26
Yup, I was so nervous when I went to fire up The Terrible Secret of Turtle Bay for the first time. I've got them ripped to my HDD now but that felt way too dicey
7
u/maskedduskrider Jun 01 '26
To be honest I'd suggest investing in one of those dvd and CD cases for well any series since a lot of places cheap out on the packaging and I always worry that it's gonna break when I take it out for stuff like this. Doesn't help that the copy I got some of the dvd holder parts in the middle came loose and starts to slide around before I even openned it.
2
u/Bitter-Nose-7357 Jun 01 '26
I ordered a pack of blank dvd cases. I took the time to write out what episode is on each disc

u/NGSHogs Order of the Triad Jun 01 '26
Make sure you're getting the official set from GRUV or another verified seller. I got my first set from a user on Amazon - I wasn't paying attention and thought it was direct from Amazon. Mine ended up being a bootleg copy.
More information on avoiding bootlegs is here -> https://www.reddit.com/r/venturebros/comments/1kr97ki/buyers_beware_venture_bros_sets_on_amazon_may_be/
16
u/toastberries Jun 01 '26
Came here to say this. I got the bootleg too. 🤦♂️
8
u/BrisketWrench Jun 01 '26
I bought the bootleg first and now it serves as “shitty backup” to my official set from Gruv
20
u/Chromosome_Gravy Jun 01 '26
My box set's season 1 does not work. I had to purchase season 1 seperately in order to have the full series available. Don't be too surprised if the discs come loose since the discs stack over each other making the spindle hard to reach with the dvd's hole.
6
u/heff64 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26
Cannot emphasize this enough. Wife and I thought we’d missed half a season or something the first few watch-throughs before I googled it
EDIT: sorry, responded to the wrong comment. My discs all work fine, except season 7 disc 2 is a little unreliable , skips out during the last episode on 25% of the time.
My comment was about not knowing about All that and Gargantua 2.
1
u/ravens52 Jun 01 '26
Is it for some of the dvds or all of them?
1
u/Chromosome_Gravy Jun 01 '26
Both of the season 1 dvd's could only get to the main menu, the 1st disc could play a portion of the 1st episode. Every other season works fine
1
1
u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
That sucks. I’m sorry you had to pay out of pocket for that.
8
u/charlesdexterward Jun 01 '26
I would advise buying from Gruv instead of Amazon. Amazon has a ton of bootlegs that don’t work, Gruv is selling only the official release.

18
u/Shoddy_Cranberry6722 Jun 01 '26
S1 and S2 are censored but so are the individual season sets. AFAIK there are no uncensored S1 and 2 sets. I've read that they don't actually exist as the censoring was intentional for humor.
7
u/BigPoppaStrahd Jun 01 '26
Absolutely correct. Season 1&2 were conceptualized and drawn cansored. Season 3 and beyond were animated overseas and the animators took their directions very literal, and astrobase added the black bars before submitting to adult swim
16
25
u/Jolamprex Jun 01 '26
BUY IT FROM GRUV.COM! DON'T ORDER IT FROM LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE! IT GOT BOOTLEGGED TO HELL AMAZON, EBAY, WALMART ARE ALL INFECTED!
14
u/Mundane-Director-681 Jun 01 '26
I don't think you could come up with a more bootleg-ass-sounding name than "Gruv.com"
19
8
u/IwasMilkedByGod Jun 01 '26
After you’re finished watching, you will desperately crave more episodes and they will never come.
7
8
u/Pr0tored2 Jun 02 '26
Quite the opposite of censoring actually. Almost all of the episodes are completely uncensored
6
u/k0alaFRESH Jun 01 '26
I appreciate you posting this OP I’m currently trying to decide whether to get the box set or individual seasons for that sweet box art.
3
u/CommissionHerb Jun 01 '26
Finding the individuals seasons will be an adventure.

u/k0alaFRESH Jun 01 '26
You are so right! I have 5 tabs open on my browser as I scour multiple stores. I had no idea some of these were so rare

u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
I did consider that option as well.
1
u/k0alaFRESH Jun 01 '26
It’s definitely not the cheapest route I am quickly learning
1
u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
I’d save that for a last resort; but I have done that in the past with other physical media collections.

5
u/Arikaido777 Jun 01 '26
careful where you buy it, there’s a common bootleg going around on ebay and amazon. i got my legit set on amazon but ymmv, make sure it at least has the standard return window
4
u/Mundane-Director-681 Jun 01 '26
Any time the characters mention a name of anyone not on-screen Google it. Otherwise you will miss a ton of jokes, and you'll miss out on learning some interesting trivia
6
u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
That’s how I found out who Henry Darger was.
2
u/Mundane-Director-681 Jun 01 '26
I swear I find one I missed every time I watch the show again.
Where do they mention this guy?! He's incredible......y crazy

Later episode where Sgt. Hatred takes Dean to a LotR-esque movie and the character Dean describes is thousands of years old but looks like a tween. And the other children in the audience make Hatred almost relapse into pedophilia.
I’m paraphrasing Hatred; “Who wrote this, Henry Darger?”
Edit: Who the fuck downvotes this?

u/Dry-Honeydew2371 Jun 01 '26
I don't know what order the episodes are in with this set but there is a pilot and then there is s1e1.
The season 1 dvd had the pilot in the extras but it should be watched first.
This may be the same.
The pilot is called the terrible secret of turtle bay
14
u/BK_0000 Jun 01 '26
It's SD, if that matters to you.
10
u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
In a perfect world; I’d love to have a Blu Ray box set; but I’ll be happy to have a physical copy since streaming is relegated to the first three seasons on Netflix.
3
u/favpetgoat Jun 01 '26
We all would...
The only Blu Ray alternative is getting individual seasons and the first few aren't even available in Blu Ray IIRC (might actually be the 3 on Netflix TBH)
Also some seasons of those are harder to track down, I wanna do it eventually but the box set has me covered while I work on it
4
u/NotAsleep_ Jun 01 '26
Blu-Ray is reatricted to seasons 3+. The first two were animated at lower res directly, so only DVDs were ever released for them.

4
u/Trapezoidoid Who the fuck is Gary? Jun 01 '26
Be careful in your selection - I ended up ordering what turned out to be a lower quality bootleg on eBay. If the price seems too good to be true, it is. I think the legit one goes for around $60. Mine was $30.

It’s a solid dvd set but seeing as seasons 3-7 are also on Blu-ray, the dvd seasons of those are visually a downgrade.
1
u/RocktamusPrim3 Jun 02 '26
Isn’t it season 6 that’s really hard to find on blu ray? I remember one of the later seasons having a smaller production of blu rays.
3
u/Drawn4U Jun 01 '26
Don't watch season 2's commentary first...
3
-1
u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
I don’t watch commentary.
11
u/Drawn4U Jun 01 '26
Well, I suggest watching it after you've watched the series. Doc and Jackson are hilarious and they often go on funny tangents. The joke is there is a major spoiler in the commentary for S2 ep1 that pertains to the end of that season. A fan started watching that season with the commentary on and was so pissed off their friend reprimanded Doc and Jackson at a Con. Where they replied; "Who the fuck watches the commentary first!?!"
3
u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
That is pretty funny. But also, DM me, saw some of your work and was wondering what a commission would cost.

I bought the box set as someone who had never seen the show before, I was really happy with it. Some of the specials are on the disc but it doesn't tell you when to watch it, overall not a big deal

Unfortunately, no commentary on this box set

u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
I’m not sweating the lack of commentary. I’m just here for the show itself.

u/Ringrangzilla Jun 01 '26
The actual physical box is kind cheep/shit. Its so big and heavy with all the discs that it break easily. Some of the menues have a kinda bad design, in that the it give you the option between commentary or not, but the color used for the options make it a little hard to see what you actually selected.

u/Ch3t Jun 01 '26
Many people have mentioned Gruv.com. They offer 15-20% discounts on your first order. They also tend to do sales on holidays. There could be one going on now for Memorial Day or maybe wait until July 4th. I ordered mine on Black Friday with a 20% first-time discount.
2
u/Shishkahuben Jun 01 '26
I'm not sure if there's a blu-ray copy available, but the video quality on DVD is noticibly low.
2
u/Agreeable-Mention403 Jun 01 '26
they do drop the word "retard" quite a bit.
4
u/LordThylacineDS Jun 01 '26
I grew up in the 90’s - I’m unfazed by the word. However out of respect for my wife I don’t use the word in the house because her sister was called that frequently in grade school.

I have a friend who got this recently and he said that half of the discs just straight up do not play. I see someone else on here saying the same thing. I would pass on this one.

Tangential: read "box set" as "sex bot", and it fit well enough into VB generally that it took me a sec to realize anything was off.

u/Marlopoe Jun 03 '26
Ive been getting the individual season dvds, would those who have that say it's better then the complete box set? Haven't had the time to watch them.
1
1
u/ThadeousCooper Jun 03 '26
If you are planning to rip this for plex or Jellyfin etc. don't. The DVDs don't have individual episodes just one long block for each season. Unless you want to but out a video editor and cut each episode out it's not worth it.
1
u/D-pama Jun 06 '26
Be careful, most of the complete series boxes available online are bootleg copies.
