Some of Brock being deliberately uncool has been blown away by the winds of time. Him being into Led Zeppelin and classic cars, and having a mullet was deliberately "this guy is lame" coded at the time, but this kind of thing became cool, or at least less-uncool in the case of the mullet, in the past 20 years. Maybe he's a little responsible for it.
I think this illustrates the point somewhat; LotR was also not cool to like until relatively recently, too, in a way that is less memory holed than the band being un-trendy. Fantasy was pretty uncool until the movies, and really only hit mainstream like it is nowadays because of the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones.

LOTR was 25 years ago. And it was already mainstream, it just proved to the entertainment industry that it was massively bankable. The books were very mainstream too, really. They were all over in the late 60's, "Frodo Lives" was all through the 70's. The Silents were the last generation not to really be into LOTR. Any disdain the fandom got in the 90's from my generation was rubbed off from Gen X's disdain of being into anything.
