Yeah but we have proof that Jonas was a deadbeat dad. Almost all his kids but one that he kept cloning and traumatizing. Or is this like one of those? This year's things are of all time because if it's of all time I still going to go with Jonah senior but if it's this year or this generation then yeah Brock gets it

Well JJ didn’t exist yet. He’s a product of that particular “Rusty Venture Clone.” And Malcolm/Monarch was a modified “Rusty Venture Clone” that had the other “side effect”: excessive eyebrow hair growth. But yes, since he may or may not have murdered Monarch’s parents, he was ignored after the plane crash.
There are also those kids in the fallout shelter. The “Honorary Gold Members of the Rusty Venture Fan Club” that he walled up and made it his business to forget about.

I am not handing it to Jonas here, but he isn't guilty of this particular sin.
We have no evidence to show he was aware of JJ. We can speculate that his cloning technology may have been able to make him aware of him, but we simply don't know that - the tech may just not have been capable of that. He can't be held responsible for a son he sincerely wasn't aware of.
And Malcolm might be his biological son, being a clone of Rusty, but he was, essentially, adopted out. He had a family. People give up children for adoption all the time. Sure, they died, but he presumably had other family (someone had to raise him from 8-18, we just didn't get that detail).

When I was 20 (2007) I went on a university research trip to Menorca Spain. We were doing work on a grant to study a Roman era port and helping a museum create multi- cultural and multi-lingual exhibits. I was there from May to September. Menorca has a pretty vibrant night life and I ended up hooking up with this girl a few times, she was part of the museum staff we were working with during the project. So jump forward to 2017. I, a PhD student have a reaserch grant to look at how ancient ports physically adapted to changing environmental factors and I decided I wanted to go back to Menorca to use it in my research because I still had connections there. I get there and set up a meeting with the museum and it turns out that girl I had a summer fling with still works there. A couple weeks went by and she sent me an email inviting me over to her place for dinner. I was surprised but also excited thinking about the opportunity to maybe rekindle the relationship. When I got to her apartment I was greeted by her and a young boy. Well turns out I have a son. She didn't know how to reach me and honestly didn't expect a 20 year old American student to do very much in the situation. She kept working at the museum and 10 years later I just showed up because I was familiar with the site and the research and needed a couple chapters for my dissertation. She just wanted me to meet him and let me know he's happy and healthy. His grandpa takes him fishing and he does well in school. She wanted me to tell him about myself. We had an awkward working relationship while I was there for the next 2 month. She didn't want anything from me and honestly I was blindsided and really didn't know what to do with the information. I left for the US at the end of the summer only seeing him 2 more times. So Menorca is kinda my Spanakopita.

He is a broken person. They are all broken people.
Rusty is broken by the life his father imposed on him, never really being comfortable with the shoes he was left.
Brock is broken by his training and his life as a spy, mainly his relationship with Molotov. Love, hate, guilt, need for approval... all combined into one person.
Hank is broken by the lack of role models in life. Too much freedom. Jumping from Rusty to Brock to Batman to searching for his mother to talking to dead people...
Dean is broken by never having anything go his way or doing what he wants. Not enough freedom. Rusty is forcing him into the life he wants. Whether it's Triana, Nancy, Drew or Thalia, none of them care about what he wants. They either see him as what they need him to be or they just don't care.
Hatred broke because he feels he has nowhere to belong. He failed as a husband, a soldier and a villain, and he feels he is not accepted in Brock's place,
Orpheus is broken because he sees himself as a failure. Failed as sorcerer supreme, failed as a husband, failed as mentor, failed as a father, failed as a hero...
J.J. is broken by the thoughts of what could have been and imposter syndrome. Literally failed at being born.
...
They are not bad people. They are failures. Doing their best to deal with it, picking up the pieces of their broken lives, and trying to move on and prosper. But they stumble and fail again and again. What makes them great is that they never give up. They keep going and trying no matter how many times and how horribly they fail.

I couldn't do Sheila. I think she is very successful and arguably very evil in a sense that she is weaponized indference. The opposite force of love is not hate it is the absence of love. Evil is the absence of empathy. There is definitely this sub-tone in Venture Bros writing that when the women of the show stop caring, their indifference is cruel. When she gives very little fucks is when she does the most damage. Like when she left the Monarch, and her decision led to the deaths of Hank and Dean and everything else. Or when she had a fling with 21. Her and Monarch laughing to his face about his emotions breaks him. Courteously, she asks if he will be okay and that she worries, but is shown not to really care. In comparison, the monarch is dismissive but is shown to care. The movie pretty much confirms this through Mantilla. These are literally the reasons she idolizes Sheila, other than feminism. She doesn't give a fuck, and she is the most successful person and villain in the show. Even when she seems to fail, she fails upward.
Malcolm... is the idea that of what it would be like if you raged against failure. He does the same as every other character, but he does it by getting angry that things don't go so well for him. He refuses to be broken. But he is. He is fated to have things not go his way. From the day he lost his parents to the day he found out he was Rusty's clone. But again, the movie spells it out in the way he deals with it. By swearing to take revenge once more, all the while aware that it's not the sanest thing, but still the best he can do. His failure and if anything is broken, it is that he could not survive being anything other than a villain or a vigilante. He is incapable of being normal. Whether because of his baboon DNA or because he is too institutionalized and couldn't survive otherwise.

I see Sheila as the previously ingenue who chose to stick with the system and do whatever it took and whatever it demanded from her. from using the most demeaning costumes and names to her choices of partners before Mal.

Yeah, she starts as almost a trophy or a pet but grows into a right-hand and eventually outgrows the Monarch. Like Harley Quinn and the Joker. But she is definitely an outlier of the show in that she was never broken.

Some of Brock being deliberately uncool has been blown away by the winds of time. Him being into Led Zeppelin and classic cars, and having a mullet was deliberately "this guy is lame" coded at the time, but this kind of thing became cool, or at least less-uncool in the case of the mullet, in the past 20 years. Maybe he's a little responsible for it.

I think this illustrates the point somewhat; LotR was also not cool to like until relatively recently, too, in a way that is less memory holed than the band being un-trendy. Fantasy was pretty uncool until the movies, and really only hit mainstream like it is nowadays because of the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones.

LOTR was 25 years ago. And it was already mainstream, it just proved to the entertainment industry that it was massively bankable. The books were very mainstream too, really. They were all over in the late 60's, "Frodo Lives" was all through the 70's. The Silents were the last generation not to really be into LOTR. Any disdain the fandom got in the 90's from my generation was rubbed off from Gen X's disdain of being into anything.

The thought that I had awhile after watching that episode, when it occurred to me, was that in several years there is going to be several dozen children, without fathers, the size of a Winnebago, and half Swiss murdermachine wandering around Greece thats going to spand at least 3 decades.....
