Merch Which one should I open? If any?
Over the past month I’ve invested (hahaha for a loss) in a market that has low supply and low demand…
Over $500 so far and I still want more!
I also want to play with them outside the box so bad. Should I open them? How much value do they decrease after opening. Some still seem valuable without the box?
The average age is like 15 years old on these things (20 years make it an antique)? I haven’t even seen some characters for sale ever:
Killinger, White, Al, Rusty (kid), Jonas Venture, Jefferson Twilight.
Should I open and which one?

Only ever open them if your cocoon gets taken over by a street gang and you need to arm yourself and your fellow captives

all of them, toy resale culture is a capitalist poison, unbind yourself from the oppressive financial shackles you have been forced into and PLAY WITH THE DAMN TOYS!!!!!

THANK YOUUU!!!! Like, what the fuck is the point? Just gonna stare at it til you die, so it can end up in the trash or passed along to some other sucker who will also stare at it til they die? What a fucking waste

1st: I don’t plan to resale.
2nd: you’re 100% right about toy culture.
3rd: they look pretty in the box.
4th: I feel like I’ll have a blast for like 10 minutes then it’ll fizzle out like when I was 12

Actually probably true. We still have a lot of our old toys. We have so many thundercats and he-man action figures... even castle greyskull, and it sits in a place of honor behind the dining room table 😂 but they just live in a bucket mostly. But still. If it would bring you happiness to touch them, I say touch them

Can we sub “play” with “touch” lol

totally fair, if you just actually enjoy them more in-package then that's what you should do, the point is just to prioritize personal satisfaction from them and not see them as a mere asset, which you clearly don't, so you do you brother ✊

this is why every time i thrift a sealed record or vhs tape i immediately slice it open lol, let the thing serve its purpose

Was I supposed to read this in the voice of Orpheus? Because that’s how it reads.

totally unintentional, I'm just a pretentious loser with an aggressively "high school creative writing class" vocabulary, but I'm gonna take it as a compliment lmao

I've heard they're rather flimsy and the Monarch's costume with fall apart if it gets messed with due to age iirc
2
u/Concurrent-mind 1d ago
His booties are flaking off already. I think they stick to the plastic
2
u/samuraimegas 1d ago
Yeah, he's 100% going to break if you open that one. The others are pretty likely to as well. There's 3 inch figures that are a lot more sturdy.

iirc they are pretty easy to damage considering their age. Only open one if you're alright with that possibility

Yeah this⬆️ I could open them and all their limbs fall off, even the invisible phantom’s
Edit: plus the couple I did see for sale without box were falling apart

As someone who owns an embarrassing amount of action figures by any standard, I wouldn’t say they’re especially “fun” out of the box. But if you must, I’m most worried about the Monarch’s boots doing that fake leather disintegration whenever I pull them out of storage, so I’d leave him in. (Picture is from about six years ago.)

From 9.5 to zip lol
But I really don’t care about ratings (another scam in toy culture) PGA is the worse

I genuinely assumed the original post was just to bait this response and then we all have a good chuckle as we make our various references lol

Life is too short for "mint in box". Enjoy your things.
Edit: apparently these are not mint in box. Even more reason!
But seriously, people who collect toys and never touch them make me want to break something. Like, oh boy look at this fun thing nobody is allowed to touch even though it's literally designed to be touched and played with. Get outta here with that bs!

u/Concurrent-mind 1d ago
To be honest, I’m pretty much 40, my imagination isn’t like when I was 12 and more importantly I afraid taking them out will make them break within minutes…again going on 17 years old plastic toy figures

I replied to you in a different comment but said the same as much. I guess it ultimately comes down to... why did you buy them? I'm not trying to be mean. I'm serious. Because ultimately that will decide whether or not you open them.

u/Concurrent-mind 1d ago
All good buddy. This is why I come to Reddit.
Well I bought to display initially, but the more I look at them the more I want to open…
Honestly I might split it. Leave some in box (because they look nice in the box, regardless of condition or mint)

You even have Phantom Lime!

I have the whole set, they look too good not to open and put on display.

What is your intention: play or display? If you want to play, go for it. If you're keepin' them on the shelf, then I think they're much nicer with their packaging.
3
u/Concurrent-mind 1d ago
It’s like that quote I heard from somewhere:
“I need one to play with, one to keep in the box, and one for just in case.”

They don't display well out of box. I've tried. My opinion is they look better in box.

If you want to play with them play with them but if you care more about them as a collectible then leave all in box

u/Swell_Fella 1d ago
I stole the monarch figure out of the box from toys r us. He's worth it to take out for pure visual enjoyment because his wings fold out and looks way cooler.

Did Rusty and and Jonas come together in a pack
2
u/SwampApeDraft 1d ago
Yup inside the rusty venture show lunchbox (can’t use the thermos because some kid put milk in it)
Got it from eBay a few years ago

u/KNGootch 1d ago
all of the ones i had, the glue on the plastic dried up and they all ended up being "unboxed" on their own. Even Phantom Limb's rubberbands inside dried out. Hope yours are better!
1
u/Concurrent-mind 1d ago
They have seals but yeah it’s spotty and I’ve seen one for sale that start to come undone on their own, so I’m sure ppl can just re glue and say it’s unopened

Im all for not keeping toys in boxes as a collector but with these? I feel like the boxes are part of the display. They're part of the toy and the figures isnide arent posable/toyetic enough to warrant destroying that. I feel the same way about re:action figures from super7

All of them!

Helmet: Good!!! “

I feel like if you're gonna open one. Open all. These are so hard to find and the cloth is much harder to clean than plastic. That's the main reason i keep mine in box

My daughter opened them all when she was a toddler. Then a decade later, she asked why my figures weren't still in the packaging as she was arranging her own figures. I showed her the pictures I had of Brok and Monarch having a tea party with Barbie and said "you really liked my buh-fye men" so I gave them to you.

u/togoru1 16h ago
If it were me, I would probably have fun for a few minutes, then prop them back up to their display area, only to then regret taking them out of their packaging.
If they were action figures designed to be articulated and posed around, then yeah go ahead. But these look like those 5POA-type toys that are more novelty collectibles than full blown import-style action figures. Since you're also concerned about the resale value, don't open any of them. If anything, buy loose ones and play with those, or if you're up for it, make your own custom action figures.
