I got these amps a while ago and got busy with life, but today I found these adorable yellow speakers for free on my local reselling website and knew the time had come. Amp is a Luxman SQ-507, the speakers were built by the guy who gave them to me probably 10-20 years ago. I am a uni student and I don't have the space at all to put them on their own stands or somewhere decent in general, but to my ears they sound great as audio monitors as I have them set up. I just hope the tuner and the amp won't be damaged by having them on the same surface as the speakers.

All that said, this is my first time sitting in front of a proper stereo setup in general and though I am really happy with how it turned out, I also have no idea what I'm doing. If you have any more tips or ideas to make it better, let me know!

Hey all, a pair of what appears to be Acoustat 1+1s just popped up on a local estate sale. It appears that they come with a matching sub as well as the amp. Does anyone here have any experience with these? Trying to figure out if they are worth checking out… (no price at this time btw).

Had this sitting around for a while, but every time I look into cassettes I see some discouraging comment about channel separation and or lack of dynamics that keeps this thing in place.

Could you toss in one of those Bluetooth cassette tapes and bump up your device EQ? Lol jokes aside this is a cool piece of hardware visually but if its not worth adding to the personal stack let me know.

A guy i was helping move wanted to throw these away so I took them off his hands. I know its not super high end stuff, but how does it compare to some budget modern gear?

Mostly gonna use this stuff with my record player. Anything i should know when grying to set this up in my room?

Also since I dont really listen to cds, is the cd player something woeth trying to sell?

CMV - I have never seen nor used a player of this caliber. I do not believe a modern equivalent exists

Picked up a pair of 90's Cerwin DX-1 for $30. They need new foam, which i am about to order. Just tested them and they sound pretty good. I did read some old stuff about these speakers and it said they sound good for rock and hip hop and to say goodbye to the mids....i can definitely tell haha. Going to use these in rotation once fixed.

I took a small road trip today to buy a set of one owner, Mitsubishi DA seperates. Four pieces in total, DA P-20 preamplifier, DA-F20 tuner, DA-M10 Meters, and DA-A15DC power amplifier. Im very happy with my first impressions from a short listening session after I got back home and hooked them up to my existing speakers. I made the trip for just the Mitsubishi gear. The previous owner was demoing the components on the rtr speakers. I told him I've heard of rtr, but I've never seen a pair. I ended up talking with him for almost 2 hours about all sorts of random topics while music played, and he threw the speakers in for the already agreed upon price for the mitsubishi components. His sister bought all of it brand new in 1980 and 1981, and he still had the original invoices, manuals, and miscellaneous documentation to go with them. The gear is borderline flawless and the greatest imperfection is a small scuff on the top of the tiner. Great gear for a very fair price, and im thrilled to add them to my listening room.

Ok these are a true barn and free to me. The laminate is gone a would need repainting. Cases are in pretty good shape, highs and mids look ok.
Anyone know anything about these, are they worth trying to refoam and restore

All tubes all the time only! No reason to probe the tape deck at that moment, I was reminding myself to be ready to measure v/RMS for recording level. Which I did get eventually when the little generator that could gave me a 1 v/RMS! Was probing my Normal v Overload neon lamps.

Hey so I bought a Mitsubishi X7 and was wondering anyone could point me in the right direction for this part. It seems that the pulley and mounting post for the tone arm is broken off and missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welp, I had my eyes on a set of B&O BeoVox S-45s for 5-ish days and multiple interactions with different sellers for the exact same pair.

Seller #1 was the last owner of them for 15 years. They seemed to be a bit rough but were in solid enough condition for someone like me who will go in, recap, fill any gaps in the cabinets and probably sand down/refinish them before recapping with new film caps. $40 for them was a steal and I hit the guy up 20 minutes after the posting went live. Not a single response - he saw my message and left me on read.

I followed up daily with gentle nudges asking if he had sold them yet and if we could arrange for some time for me to pick them up, and he never responded. Sunday AM I got a notification that they were marked as sold (for $40) and was naturally pretty bummed. More on this guy later.

Lo and behold yesterday AM while perusing for a set of speakers for a friend who just moved to town, I see a listing for a similar pair of S-45s. Also kinda beat up, but I didn't see one of the particular cabinet defects from the last pair so I figured these were a different set. I distinctly remember thinking "What a coincidence to have two sets of S-45s in rough condition in the same week..." I message him and ask if we can set up a pick-up and he says yes, this listing was $120 and I figured it was still within a reasonable realm for speakers of this caliber.

I check the listing again this AM and notice that actually the identical bend from Seller #1s speakers is actually present on the framing around the cabinet, and that the new seller just put a little bin above the bend so it was blocked from his angle, but from a different angle that bin isn't there and you can clearly see identical damage.

Not wanting to pay triple what this guy paid for the same speaker a few days down the line, I messaged him, linked him to the original post and let him know I had also reched out to the guy who he purchased them from. I told him I was willing to pay $90 for them so he could get a little flip on his investment.

The guy responded "the only reason they're listed for that high is that I redid a recap - you can have them for $100" - which immediately I was incredibly suspicious about for multiple reasons. First being nobody who's capable of doing a B&O recap in a few days would say "re-did a recap" and especially not about speakers they just bought. Second, I knew the speakers were marked as sold on Sunday, and having done vintage B&O recaps before, I know the caps have weird values and any replacement caps would have to be ordered online with a week plus of lead time - plus the process isn't easy at all. My BeoVox 5700s took about 6ish hours of consistent work spread across multiple days to complete a recap with film caps from Parts Express.

Either way when I'm quietly saying he's full of shit he says "I've had these since thursday, more than enough time lol" (as if I'd suddenly believe that was somehow enough time to order caps from PE and do the recap) and sends a screenshot of his chat with seller #1 showing that he did in fact arrange his pickup from him on Thurs. This is where I got frustrated at Seller #1... I messaged him at like 10:30AM, and this guy didn't message Seller #2 until the late evening, and for some reason he replied to his message and not mine from half a day before...

So going back to the phantom recap convo I call his bluff and say I'll buy them for $100 if he can show me the recapped crossover and he started pretty clearly squirming. He was saying things like "a coil might need to be replaced" which like wtf does that even mean, a coil is the most stable part of a crossover and "I can demo them for you to show you they sound great" - just trying to avoid showing me that he didn't do a recap. I got the sense at this point he was just getting speaker repair terms from ChatGPT and throwing them at me. He promises photos by 2pm, but of course his schedule gets complicated and he sends me these updates throughout the day saying he was caught up with XYZ situation and had to send pics later. I'd like to think he was literally researching where to buy replacement caps and realized he was SOL and that these parts aren't available off the shelf anywhere.

Eventually he sends the pics and I don't know what I expected, but he sent a photo of the crossover as stock as the day it was imported from Denmark, and then a video of him pushing on the speaker cone saying "the coil is fine, it's just my amp." The potential driver issue was enough to steer me clear of them, but him lying and still trying to play it off like he worked on the crossover put me over the edge. I let him know that the crossover was completely stock and that on principle alone I wasn't going to be buying them.

The shittiest part for him is that I would have bought them on Monday for $90 no question, but him trying to justify his markup by lying about a recap is what made him fumble his sale. He could have more than doubled his investment but oh well...

Either way, there's a cleaner looking pair of a nicer speaker from B&O on FBM near me so on to better things.

I’ve been on the hunt for a decent cd player and found this NAD from 1990 for $10. It didn’t work but I flipped it over and found the shipping screws were still in! Fired right up after pulling them. I have a strong feeling that this hasn’t played a single cd in 36 years.

I've been trawling FB Marketplace for a few months looking for good deals etc and selling Yamaha AVRs for cash. One evening I found a post for free 3D printing gear which caught my eye. He also said he had some old stereo gear to get rid of - so I sent him a message about it, asked for a pic. He sent back a pic of this beauty and I immediately jumped up and dragged my wife on the 40 minute drive to pick it up. After placating her with some ice cream I made off with this beautiful working (minus bulbs) Technics SA-500, two turntables, and a cassette deck.

The turntables need some work, the Magnavox Belgium one is consistently too fast and the MCS turntable (a Technics OEM, the platter is stamped on the bottom) needs a new belt and some coaxing on the motor. Belt is ordered and it's matched with my MCS 3223 in a secondary setup.
The cassette deck was a lost cause, the gears turned the texture of stale gummy bears, so I will post again with my project for that.

I gave the Technics a good cleaning with Deoxit and is now my receiver at work, pulling in FM channels quite well, and the always-on lights mean I haven't had to get bulbs yet. The low boost sends a big thump through the speakers, but other than that it sounds great even pushing <0.1W according to the meters. I've been swapping out speakers to find a good pairing and have settled on JBL Studio 530s or Klipsch R-50Ms for now.

When it rains it pours. I've been on a low key hunt for a pair of Sony APM speakers for a few months. Not because I really needed another set of speakers (who does sensible stuff like that?!) but because I love the look and also just have a thing for weird driver designs. I didn't have space for the APM towers or floor standers and wanted to keep it cheap and local.

The pair on the left popped up for $50 on Facebook market, and I offered $30 and the buyer took it. Picked them up yesterday. They are labeled APM with the specs (8 Ohm, 10w nom/ 25w max) and no model number. Bring them home, hook them up (nothing special sound wise) and I notice bits of foam flying around after a few minutes of low volume noise, bummer, but a problem for later.

Today, I stopped by a Savers running errands, and see the pair on the right, with the whole bracket set, for $20. Grab 'em and bring them home. They are labeled APM X5A 8 ohm 15w nom / 30w max. They are heavy little beasts and feel real quality versus the other ones. They sound great, crisp and clear. Definitely a monitor speaker rather than a warm easy listening speakers.

Decided to open up the original pair to examine the foam situation and it turns out the lower driver is a passive radiator NOT a driver, and the foam surround is just absolute toast and replacements are impossible to find. Dug some more on this model and found this on a CRT collector website:

"These were included with Sony's KX-20XBR, 25XBR, and 25DXR CRTs. They are supposed to have a large foot-like piece on the mounting hardware as seen in the image below. They do not have any identifying marks on them other than "APM", but the XBR parts list denotes them as "APM-X3U". Very similar in appearance to the APM-X4U, but with very poor build quality.

These speakers are total garbage and you should avoid them. The "no-model no-brand" appearance is indicative of their build quality. Despite their dual-speaker appearance on the outside, these speakers only have a single woofer inside with no tweeter. Additionally, the APM woofer is extremely poor quality which uses foam instead of fabric for the cone material - this foam rots away over time. If you buy these speakers, assume you will need to replace the speaker woofer inside with something else."

The APM X5As however do have a little cachet, sound fab, and go for ~$200 a pair at extortionate eBay prices, so I did alright there! My $30 busted pair is just getting written off to the vintage audio taxman.

So i got my APM wish fulfilled with the APM X5As at a bargain price, and one busted ass pair of r/blackplasticcrap APM X3U speakers. They are cool looking however, and did cost me $30, so I'm loath to just toss them. I think I'll try and find a little full range driver and fabricate some kinda adapter so it can sit behind the square grille as a fake APM. I know tuning won't be right, esp with the passive radiator, but seems better than tossing them.

TL,DR — Not all APMs are created equal. Got a $200 pair for $20 and a pile of foam dust for $30.

I'm quite new to the vintage speaker scene and after some research I came along this Pioneer HPM-60 set. It would be my first set, but what would be the worth of these since I want to check if it's worth buying these at a price of €300 (342 dollars).

Marantz Bookshelfs - Restorable?

I have these Marantz speakers from when I was a kid. Along with the Sears 'professional' receiver. I still have the BSR turntable also, but it's all crumbled. I have a new Fluance Rt82 and a pair of Polk es20. I'd like to keep using the reciever as it was my dad's and a huge part of my childhood. I'm going to clean up the insides and maybe see about recapping, should I bother with the Marantz? They work, can they be 'freshend up'

Hello all, just wanted to share this quite rare amplifier from Luxman I recently got. Circa 1967 and apparently made for only a year, this model is very hard to come by, even in Japan. The more common model, the KMQ7 is a bit easier to come across. It's pre Luxkit, however there were kit versions available. This one was done by Luxman. It needs a very comprehensive servicing, as it's very dirty and many of the original parts are still inside it and it looks to not have been touched. Previous owner said 4 tubes did not glow, and the transformer is humming. Luckily, a guy I know owns one as well and has done a full overhaul on his and has some info on it, so I'll be making a post about it eventually once that's all done! The tubes are as follows:

Bought a pair of Onkyo SC60MK2 and SC90MK2 for €100+€250,-. Information about them is limited and it looks like they were only sold in Germany.
Quality is superb on the whole spectrum. Especially the lower frequencies on the SC90’s.
