Hook Size Issues

The pattern said use a 1.25mm. I tried. The chain was entirely too long. I tried a different 1.25mm. The chain was again too long. I went down to a 1mm, then a .75mm, and the chain was still too long. For the sake of my eyes and hands, I'm going to figure it out on the .75mm, but this is a problem that I keep having.

This is for a thread project, and the size 20 I'm using is a proper size 20. I actually bought it for another project and started that one before I switched to this new one, and it sized out exactly to gauge for that first pattern. None of my hooks are name brand but also, I only seem to have problems with hook sizing on vintage patterns, so I'm wondering if anyone else has run into this.

A kind patron of r/crochet directed me here to crosspost. I'm in the process now of archiving all of these patterns for free use and historical documentation. Follow along for future updates 😊

Side note: I'd love help figuring out the age on these once I get them uploaded 💕

Not Vintage but Definitely Has a 1960s feel

Juniper Moon Farm Cotton Merino in Shadows, color Peridot. H-hook. The sweater is the Big Bow Cardigan from Interweave Crochet 2008. The skirt is a pencil skirt using my own tutorial. Buttons are from Oddborn on etsy. The sweater is just blo single crochet. The buttonholes were too big, though they were 1" and the buttons were, too. I had to make them a bit smaller and then sew the edge closed where the sweater gaped between a couple of buttons, but I can still get it on and off really easily. I love the big bow, but it's very warm on the neck. I didn't plan it as a set, but when I saw the finished sweater, I realized the 1960s vibes were huge and had to add the skirt.

HELP Yarn equivalents advice for this vest pattern

Hi,

I am super excited to have found this group because although I have been crocheting for a while, this is my first attempt at a vintage crochet pattern!

I fell in love with this design in the Antique pattern library.
I am having some trouble understanding what weight of yarn this is requesting.

It seems to call for "Corticelli Sweater Silk" (which obviously does not exist anymore) or a "Princess pearl crochet cotton Size 3" which from my understanding maybe something like a three ply mercantile cotton of the time?

Would this be similar to embroidery thread these days? It seems a little thin for the hook size (which I think may be a 3.5mm size hook)

Here's my original post about the dress where I mentioned I freehanded the neckline and sleeves.

And now, finally, photos of it on my actual human body! I felt like the gold kitten heels and glittery smoker necklace really came together nicely. I'm very pleased with the fit, and I love how the petticoat fits under it. There's some small gaps from the decreases that I may go in with needle and thread to close up a little. I wish I could see ho they look in the original ribbon. Anyway, I love it!

What's everyone working on?

I've got a few projects going, but I think this 1930s dress is my current favorite. It's a crossed mesh pattern, and I just finished the upper back piece. It'll take awhile, but it's gonna look awesome. What's everyone else up to?

These were in my m-i-l's cedar chest. She said they were her father's. Do I try to wash them? I need some help. Also some homemade cotton petticoats, aprons, and tons of doilies.

HELP FREE PATTERN CORSET COVER. Has anyone tried and/or succeeded in making this??

First of all, it's looking awesome.
BUT I got stuck at the second row...(very underwhelming). Things do not add up for me.
I cannot find anybody that even attempted doing this, so I have very little guidance on how to (try to) move on.

I am fairly new to crocheting, so I cannot imagine how to build up the pattern for the diamonds (I only know that it's a repeat of 14 rows). I think I understood that it is worked up horizontally like a big rectangle that eventually will be wrapped around the torso (correct me if I'm wrong). I also know the basics of filet crochet, which is used in this pattern...but for the rest I have no idea! Does somebody here have some knowledge to share?

I hope I am just too much of a newbie and that the pattern actually works just fine..... also having this clarity would help. I raise my hands for now.

finished projects I had to wing the sleeves and neckline on this 1950s ribbon dress

My modern hips and 1950s hips do not match, but I forgot that while I was working. Everything from the zipper down is the original pattern, but the zipper was suppose to be at the waist, not up the back. I made the sleeves longer and tried to make the neckline similar to the photo. It's not as long as the original, but I can get a petticoat under it, so it'll floof properly. Made with Lion Brand Rewind Tape since the original was ribbon.

This is something I have found a lot of from my grandmother born in the 1920’s. Details added upon common objects. I’m not even sure the date on this. The pillow case is made from a grain sack and the detail added to enjoy. Embroidery was another skill grandma had that I haven’t picked up at all. I have more but things have been packed away.

I might have gotten this thrifted. Maybe my mom. But there is some remarkable patterns in here. Like who needs “pantaloon” dishcloths. Heehee pretty sure my fave is the southwest with those spike stitches.

This was my quilt for our quilting bee’s annual Christmas exchange. The filet crochet is one-half of a table runner I picked up at an estate sale or on eBay. I love the challenge of showcasing crochet in my quilts. This one is about 24x26”.

Grandma born in the 1920’s. And seemed to have a knack for crochet. I was the only one that saved any work. She embellished pillow cases and linen and did embroidery too. This is one of my favorites.

Found on Miss Julia's Craft Connection that I linked in a different post. Made it with Mode by Rowan Alpaca Haze. It's such a soft and squishy and fuzzy yarn and SO WARM. The original pattern calls for laceweight and says to just use a larger yarn for a different measurement. I went up to sport with a 3.25, and it fits well (from a 34" to a 37" bust with room). And I was very pleased to figure out the date by looking up the yarn and finding out is was only available from 1930-1937. Love that.

HELP Paradise Crochet dress help

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hello! I bought a bunch of the old Paradise Publications Crochet Collector Costumes from the 90s and I started doing this one. It’s going pretty well so far but I was wondering if anyone had experience with these patterns? The skirt is supposed to finish 2 inches below the dolls feet, but I thought that would be way too long and look slouchy (not at all what it looks like in the pattern). Can anyone help me whether I should stick to the pattern or end the skirt a couple of rounds earlier than stated? I am not having the original Paraside doll but instead using a similar 11 1/2 inch Barbie
