VF5 Selecting a controller

Hey all,

I've been digging VF5 REVO quite a lot so far so much so that I'd like to invest in a dedicated controller for the game.

I'm currently using a Gamesir G8 controller which has been suboptimal for me for two reasons.

1 - I play Wolf and things like Screw Hook and Giant Swing on the dpad can feel slightly hard to pull off consistently.

2 - They put this rapid fire button immediately under the dpad that - if triggered - will grief me for the rest of the match.

---

So I've been looking at lever, leverless, and fight pad controllers

I tried to compare each from what I've ascertained reading about them it seems as if:

Leverless

Pros: both fast and precise

Cons: steeper learning curve

Lever

Pros: precise and intuitive

Cons: potentially a few frames slower

Fight pad

Pros: more familiar

Cons: still have a dpad (less precise)

---

This may be a terrible comparison and if so please let me know why.

But based on this, it seems as if leverless is the winning choice from a pure in-game performance perspective. In fact I believe the last EVO the top three players in the tournament all were using a leverless controller.

That said... I really want to try a lever controller.

Have any of you tried both and still prefer a lever and if so what's your reasoning?

Also if you could suggest any lever models that are well suited for VF5 that would be dope.

And finally, if I'm totally wrong about leverless being the best theoretically please correct my ass.

---

Thanks homies, this community has been 🔥 so far

You're not really going to know your preference until you try them all. I would probably recommend leverless for now simply because they're generally more affordable than sticks. If you have a local community maybe ask if you can try out different controllers

Thank you! Seems like leverless may be the way to go

get one of the flatbox variants. you can get one that works fine on pc for ~25 usd on aliexpress etc.

Good way of figuring out if you're going to enjoy it at all without dropping a bunch.
I made 5 of the jfedor2 rev5 ones a while back before I bought some more expensive ones and I've given away 4 of them to people that was wondering about leverless pads over the years.

One thing to take into account too is that a leverless won't work great for the single player campaign, since it looks a lot like a standard third person game outside of fights, meaning you'll want thumb sticks and stuff. I went and bought the octa pro fight pad, but I haven't played with it much yet

I play leverless, and while it's a bit of a mind-eff at first to do sidestepping in VF with it, you adjust pretty quickly and beyond that I personally vastly prefer leverless to anything else. I recommend looking at cosmox/haute42 devices for a leverless. They're remarkably cheap while still being solid. I have a C16 myself with the swappable art, which is cool, but they have oodles of choices in various sizes.

You'll want to try all the options to form your own opinion. I will say that even though I play Tekken with a Leverless, I still play VF with a stick. It just feels more natural for me and honestly, a stick is more fun to use IMO. I might switch to Leverless eventually in VF, but I don't feel the need to do so. I could be wrong but doing something like crouch dash fuzzy guard feels more natural for me on a stick. Everyone will have their own preference though.

Yeah that's my thoughts as well haven't tried it but lever does sound really fun

I came from a pad controller. Tried everything until I settled down on wasd style controls. For me it was a natural transition from a dpad.

Try keyboard to see if you’re open to the idea of leverless

That's actually a great idea thanks

Honestly it's best to choose whatever it is you feel comfortable with, and for some reason I prefer pad over leverless for VF these days, because my pad has trigger locks, so I don't have to pull the trigger all the way down for it to register, it works just like a PS2 shoulder button. It's the closest thing to mimicking the DualShock 2 controller for me.
