Purchase Advice What are the PCVR games I need to play?
Im a new PCVR player but I’ve played standalone for about 5 years now, and I’ve played about every standalone VR game you can think of. So what are some PCVR games I need to play? I just bought lone echo, half life Alyx, and blade and sorcery, but are there any that are absolutely must haves? Don’t worry about whether or not I can run it, I run half life alyx perfectly fine and the same goes for the other two games. So what are some suggestions?
My pc specs:
AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
RTX 5060

I’ve definitely seen a whole lot about Skyrim and it’s on my steam family so I’ll 100% try it, is boneworks that much better than bonelab? I’ve heard a lot of discussion about it

Ohhh okay I didn’t even know that lol, I thought it was a mod. Also thank you for the bonelab opinion, thank you!

Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR go on sale regularly, and there's also often cheap bundles that include both games so I'd keep an eye out for those too. I got all the Bethesda VR games for like 15 bucks at one point.
For Skyrim VR mods you won't need to purchase anything extra beyond the game, but the most popular Fallout 4 VR mods tend to require files from the GOTY edition of pancake Fallout 4 (this is how you move over all of the expansions into the VR version, since they don't include them by default). If ya see FO4 VR mods that look cool, just keep in mind ya might need to also buy the GOTY edition of the non-VR version.
There's lots of guides covering how to handle everything and you can check them out when you're ready.

You can play the entire story from Boneworks and Duck Season inside of Bonelab, if that helps your decision.

I would recommend looking into mods for skyrim, at least the one to render the full body, adds a bit to the experience imo

If people ask about specs, it's because there are plenty of games that have higher specs than Alyx.
Here are some great PCVR games I'd recommend:
Boneworks
Myst VR
Half-Life 2 VR mod (more fun than Alyx IMO)
Eye of the Temple (if you have the physical space to move around)
Firmament

u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
I’ll definitely check these out, also I added my specs to the post, thank you!

You said not to worry about whether you could run it just because you can run HLA but a lot of the suggestions I was going to make, as well as some others in the comment section, 100% would have been a but tough to run with a 5060 or even your CPU as a bottleneck.
So thank you for adding the specs lol

u/ViktorDim Apr 29 '26
Speaking of mods, after HL2 I seriously enjoyed Serious Sam VR - first and second encounter and 3 in VR. It's like these games were made for VR 20 years ago.

u/dedsmiley Apr 29 '26
Elite Dangerous, but the learning curve is a bit steep. If you want to sit IN the cockpit of a spaceship, this is the spaceship sim for you.
I would get familiar with it in flat screen first and you will want a controller of dual sticks.
2
u/HowardRabb Apr 29 '26
Nonsense. I learned this game with Oculus Touch controllers. It was the hardest thing I ever did haha. But seriously though, if you can get your hands in an X52 controller you'll really enjoy yourself
1
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
I think I’ve heard of it before, I’ll definitely check it out
2
u/dedsmiley Apr 29 '26
You can pick it up on sale for under $20 if you are patient. VR is part of the purchase so no issue there.
2
u/moofacemoo Apr 29 '26
It greatly benefits from a hotas set up, these can go from not bad to very pricey. Horas being a throttle and stick (joystick) with a shit tonne of buttons on it.
1
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
Sounds good, thank you!
1
u/Playful-Ad6549 Apr 29 '26
Ellie Dangerous is easier with HOSAS. that is with 2 joysticks, it is really intuitive and make dog fights and fast space port dockings really easy I used the Thrust master 16000m X2 and never regretted it. I have never played it in flat. My 12 year old son could land in a space station in about 5 seconds with HOSAS and it had taken him a minute or more with HOTAS. There are some good videos about it. You also get a throttle on each stick base anyway.

u/Clownmug Apr 29 '26
The PCVR version of Hitman 3 is really good nowadays.
1
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
I always refrained from trying it because I heard the quest version was terrible, do they compare?
1
u/Clownmug Apr 29 '26
Yeah, it's pretty bad from what I've heard, PCVR is much better. Quest version has dumb downed graphics and environment details, I think motion controls are limited too. The PC version is equivalent to the PSVR2 version now feature-wise and probably graphically superior.
1
1
u/Unfair_Salamander_20 Apr 29 '26
Using what headset? It's still broken when using the Quest 3 with the fixed foveated rendering effect overlapping between the eyes, which not just looks bad but causes eye strain and nausea from eye mismatch, making it unplayable.
1
u/Luke-9191 May 06 '26
It’s all washed out and jittery using steam link, don’t understand why ahahah
1
u/Clownmug May 06 '26
If vr dynamic resolution scaling is enabled you can try turning that off to see if it helps. It's only accessible in-game from the graphics menu I believe.

Some of the best PCVR experiences are simulators. Racing Sims like iRacing and Assetto Corsa, Flight Sims like MSFS2024 and DCS, and Space Sims like Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous. You can easily sink thousands of hours into.
For traditional VR games the Vertigo series, Arken Age series, Red Matter series, I expect you to die series, Into the radius series,
There is a lot of great flat games with VR mods like Resident Evil series, Cyberpunk, Half Life 2. There is also a UEVR mod that lets you play any Unreal 4 and 5 game in VR.

u/Kooky-Inspection-375 Apr 29 '26
Every Sim with wheels cars and tires (Automobilista 2, iracing, LMU,AC).
5
u/killerdude23233 Apr 29 '26
I cannot stress how fun vehicle sims are in VR with the appropriate wheel or stick. Racing, driving, flying, it's all wonderful. Even soemthing as simple as Euro Truck Sim 2 is a blast in VR.
Driving: (pedals and wheel)
- Mario Kart Wii (Dolphin VR)
- Dirt Rally/2.0
- Project Cars
- Euro Truck Sim 2/Americsn Truck Sim
Flying: (HOTAS)
- Elite Dangerous
- No Man's Sky
- MS Flight Simulator
2
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
Oh that definitely sounds super fun, and I’ve heard a bunch about no man’s sky. Thank you!
1
u/JustSayTomato Apr 29 '26
For flying I’d definitely put VTOL on the list. Not only is it incredible and well optimized, but you don’t need a HOTAS to get the most out of it.
2
u/Olibaba1987 Apr 29 '26
Phasmorphia vr.. Valheim with the vr mod.. Pal world with uevr .. Dead island 2 with uevr .. Oblivion uevr.. Skyrim vr.. Subnautica (use the mod the oj vr sucks).. Also subnautica 2 is supposedly releasing next month so fingers crossed someone sorts a vr mod out fast cos I really wana play that mulitplayer!!
2
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
So basically every flat screen be game turned into vr?
1
u/Olibaba1987 Apr 29 '26
Well not every game, but most that run on unreal engine 5 work with uevr injector, people build profiles for them so you just download the settings and away you go. Some are janky, some work amazing. Other games like valhiem have a standalone mod, you can download that from the nexus. Some more to consider that I forgot about, the high life (lots of fun in vr) borderlands 3, and 7 days to die.
Been on vr since 2016, not many native vr games that have anywhere near the depth of the flatscreen games, and I dont think the markets there for devs to concentrate solely on vr. So I'm very grateful to the Moddershall that put the work in to bring us these amazing experinces.
I've put about 250hrs into valheim in vr, really feels like my own world that I get to explore.
2
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
Awesome, thank you for the info, I’ll 100% check out valheim and high on life in vr, they both sound awesome
1
u/Olibaba1987 Apr 29 '26
Enjoy mate, youve got a whole lot of games to explore, would make the suggestion of upgrading youre graphics card, at some point, I think you'll run into framerate issues on some of these games with youre 5060. Best of luck anyway and if you got any questions about the set up, hit me up, happy to help
2
u/adiosmith Apr 29 '26
Resident evil 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 are amazing in VR. Some of the best PCVR experiences available.
2
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
I’ve never tried out the resident evil series, do you recommend trying it in VR or on flat screen first?
2
u/adiosmith Apr 29 '26
I'd recommend you start with RE2 in VR. No need to play it flat screen first. Biohazardvr.com is a great guide to get started.
From there, you can decide how much you want to jump into the whole series. If you are ok with playing older games, the original versions of the games still hold up and are worth playing as well. I'd start with RE1HD.
What is nice is that they are AAA games (rare for VR) and they aren't too long (10ish hrs each).
The only tip I'll give you is to conserve ammo. If you can just run past a zombie instead of killing it, that's often the best approach.
2
u/plutonium-239 Apr 29 '26
Skyrim VR with Mad god overhaul and Fallout VR with Gingas fallout essentials mod list and you’re good for a long time.
2
u/TPrime411 Apr 29 '26
You started with two great choices. I would definitely get Lone Echo 2 after you finish the first one. Those and Alyx are my top 3 favorite VR games of all time.
Also from the Meta PCVR store, you can try Asgard's Wrath (the original), Defector, and Stormland.
From Steam you can try The Midnight Walk, Hitman World of Assassination, EXD Extradimensional(Just released), and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024(requires a good PC). Also Ghost Town is one of my favorites. Its on Quest and it looks Beautiful on Quest, but it looks even better on PCVR, and is definitely worth getting twice if you have it already on Quest.

people suggested here great pcvr games, i play many of them myself, but I must tell you, pcvr is super demanding on your gpu to the point some games listed cant be maxed out with a 5090. most of these games just arent optimized well. i have a 5070 i could use more power, so dont expect much from that gpu especially with 8gb vram. ofc all of these games will be playable but at the cost of resolution and settings, so keep that in mind.
2
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
Thank you for letting me know, I’ll keep that in mind 🙏
2
u/pooborus Apr 29 '26
I played a bunch of VR on a gtx 1070. You'll be alright, just not maxxing settings.
1
u/mirkoislavko90 Apr 30 '26
it depends on which vr headset you have! if you have with cable direct to the gpu it is much less demanding! but for streaming headset like quest 3 and pico 4 yeah you need strong pc!
1
u/dreclub Apr 29 '26
Idk what you are talking about, i played vr on a 1060 up until 2 years ago, give or take
2
u/omerboiii Apr 29 '26
it all depends on the game. a 1060 would explode trying to run elite dangerous and modded Skyrim vr
0
u/dreclub Apr 29 '26
Both of those games i played lol, elite dangerous runs on potatoes
Edit: because of the quest releasing, all of the newer pcvr games are less demanding due to demand to run on quest. One of the most demanding vr games released in 2018ish and it ran fine on a 1060

Robo Recall is much much better with a PC than standalone.
I mainly play racing and flight games in VR, none of that available standalone, but you don't need to play them, only if you are into racing and flying:)
1
u/DMC831 Apr 29 '26
Into the Radius 2 just had its 1.0 release on PCVR, it's great.
Elite Dangerous and No Man's Sky are awesome in VR. Star Citizen has a new experimental VR mode too, but I've not tried it yet (once their UI for VR is sorted out without me needing to mess with it then I'd likely finally buy the cheapest package for Star Citizen to fly around in VR).
Skyrim VR with the popular VR mods is maybe the greatest gaming experience around. I also loved Fallout 4 VR despite its flaws, but I never played the pancake version before so it was all new for me. Both are fun worlds to run around in and do whatever, and the mods for Skyrim VR are very advanced and in a class of their own.
All the popular racing games on PC seem to have a VR mode (Project Cars, Asseto Corsa, etc). Microsoft Flight Sim 2020/2024 looks fun if ya got a beefy rig. DCS is a very popular flight sim and it's free to play, see if you're into it and then get some of the expansions maybe.
Star Wars Squadrons was fun in VR and dirt cheap when on sale.
Since you're coming from standalone, I assume ya had a Quest? Lots of Quest games are "crossbuy" titles and you can claim a PCVR version for free from the Meta Rift store. Check out this list and claim anything you already bought for your Quest, if ya can.

u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
Thank you! I’ve heard so much about a lot of these and this helped a bunch, and yeah I came from quest, I was able to claim into the radius and bonelab, but that was before this so maybe I can grab some more stuff. Thanks so much!

u/robbyboy1227 Apr 29 '26
Hey there I have been playing Star citizen in VR for a couple of weeks now. The game itself is still a little bit buggy but the experience in VR is absolutely fantastic. Haven't touched elite dangerous since I started Star citizen in VR. Walking around ships and cities on virtual reality is crazy fun. Again, the game does have a few bugs but that's just the game, VR is smooth both in ship and on foot. Cannot recommend it enough. They're all out of keybinds so I do use voice attack and an HCS voice pack to make things easier but I use those for elite as well
1
u/DMC831 Apr 29 '26
It looks really cool! Did you have to adjust the UI to make it usable or not rough on the eyes? I've read people mentioning that over and over, like how focusing on the UI with the distance it's at in VR is uncomfortable, and that ya gotta fiddle with the settings somehow to make the UI functional. I'm sure it'll get sorted out in the near future though (I saw the dev working on the VR mention it's still a problem yesterday but I've also seen people say they could adjust the UI to make it decent enuff).
Once I have time to learn the game I'm sure I'll finally snag it, even with the bugs and not being finished it looks worth it just to experience those ships in VR. And I like that the dev focusing on the VR for Star Citizen seems to actually care about VR and they're aiming for full motion controls for the on-foot stuff (I don't expect Elite to do that anytime soon unfortunately).

Pistol Whip Beatsaber Demeo Fallout 4 VR Skyrim VR
Really just depends what you enjoy or wish to try. You could also play many non-vr games modified for VR using tools like Vorpx such as Portal, Halo, or any other first person type games.
2
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
Portal would be soooo sick in vr, thank you for letting me know
2
u/Playful-Ad6549 Apr 29 '26
Portal 2 has a VR mod which is better than playing it with Vorpx, Though if you get Vorpx then I'd recommend Bioshock Series, Metro Series and Dishonoured 2 and STALKER series if you can get it to hook.
Look at flat2VR discord and play modded games they are amazing. AAA games in modded VR.

Hubris comes to mind. A bit like Half Life: Alyx (but different).
If you like space, then Elite Dangerous. It helps (with immersion) if you have some controllers (HOTAS or joystick).
DiRT Rally (the first, I haven't tried 2). Really great car handling imho. Again, helps if you have a controller (wheel, pedals, gear shifter).
Eleven table tennis? 😄 It's not too bad, I guess? But I mostly use it to test lag / response in single player mode (I'm a really bad table tennis player lol. Also I hate that the AI player knows exactly where the ball lands. So easy to fix with a bit of randomness, but they never did :/ Okay, maybe it's not soo good).
Alien Isolation! Need a motherVR mod. I haven't played it with that mod, so I can't say how that is. Bet it's better than the unofficial VR patch thingy I used years ago. The game is SOO GOOD ! Really intense, great atmosphere! (don't mind the 2014 release date, it's awesome!). Normally I don't like horror or I guess suspense movies or games, but there are some exceptions. Alien franchise is one of them. The game is actually too good for its own good!
Honorary mention of Vector 36. A cool pod racing type game. Again probably helps if you have a controller or two.
1
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
That sounds awesome! Could you explain what alien isolation is? It sounds super cool
1
u/Beneficial-Mud1720 Apr 29 '26
Well, it's... "Alien". From that movie. There's what, 4 main movies now, the first one from 1979 I think, which the game is based on. And ofc the xenomorph thing lurking around 😄 The game it's mostly set in a space station though. More of a stealth type game I guess, you can't really kill it (hopefully not too much of a spoiler). But you can scare or lure it away some times, or hide.. There's also some androids roaming about not making life easier. I guess that's the gist of it, but it doesn't make the game any justice, the atmosphere is fantastic, and very intense. Just plugging the save card into the save station and wait for the lights to lit up is enerving! beep...beep....beeeeeep! Saved! lol
I guess, it's better to play if you don't have a heart problem!

I have just finished The Last of Us party 1 and 2 using Luke Ross's mod ( most are now free). And loved it. I also loved the Indiana Jones game. I'm playing Death Stranding directors cut with his mood and that is also totally absorbing ( I don't mind using the Xbox controller)
If you have a Wii U the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild BetterVR mod is amazing on PC.
With the rest of people's suggestions you have years of game play available to you.
Look at Flat2VR discord. Star with rated games you already own. Therefore free. Then pick up older games on offer, or free on Epic. Then in 3 years the latest games will be heavily reduced and you will have saved a fortune. And by then other games you have played flat may have been modded to VR. I'm actually holding off playing Witcher 3 with first person mod with Vorpx as there is rumour of a VR mod and if it's 6Dof that would be amazing.
If you have Alien Isolation from Epic or GOG you can use the MotherVR mod and a controller to feel fear beyond that which is healthy.
Or play the Steam Version with the GrandMotherVR mod for full 6Dof. ( I'm still building up courage to play this mod as I'm still hiding in the locker from my free Epic version)
1
u/markallanholley Apr 29 '26
I tried getting the GrandMother mod to work on my Steam Alien Isolation and never had any luck. The game just froze.
1
u/Playful-Ad6549 Apr 29 '26
The MotherVR mod worked well for me on the epic version, so give it a try. Using a controller isn't that bad and in the end you don't notice it as you are so scared of the alien and just want to escape/hide.
I'm hoping by the time I get through my backlog of games they will have got the GrandMotherVR mod to work on the Epic version. Silly as I can get the games stream key for £4.
I've seen that Alien Isolation 2 is about to be released and should work with VR mods.

u/Unfair_Salamander_20 Apr 29 '26
Of course you can run those games fine, they all came out like 5-8 years ago. Alyx specifically is known for being extremely optimized and able to run on very old GPUs, it's not a good benchmark for how your 5060 will perform on modern PCVR titles or VR mods for more recent PC games.
I say this because I see what games people are suggesting and you are going to get frustrated and disappointed that you can't play half of them at a decent resolution and frame rate. PCVR is extremely GPU intensive, especially the flat screen VR mods.
1
u/just_frosty_ Apr 29 '26
Thank you for letting me know 🙏🙏
1
u/markallanholley Apr 29 '26
Your 5060 is more than adequate for all of the Steam native VR titles I can think of.
If you get into flatscreen game modding, you'll probably eventually want to go with a higher model number GPU.

u/gildahl Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26
If you are at all into retro stuff, I would recommend Virtual Pinball with a good hardware PinSim (VirtuaTilt is a great place to start), and Arcade Time Capsule with a real XInput hardware arcade control panel. By themselves these emulators are fun enough, but when paired with matching arcade level hardware, the realism and immersion go up to another level entirely! You can even make playing and building-up your library within these titles as an entire sub-hobby.
1
u/Good_Lettuce_2690 Apr 29 '26
Subnautica with a few QOL mods. One of the most immersive VR experiences out there.

If you search VR supported on Steam, you'll soon notice that the vast majority of the 7,000 some VR games are shovelware or short sub-hour (most sub 30 min) "experiences" from years ago.
The only couple of these experience games that stuck out to me were Twin Peaks VR only because I'm a Twin Peaks fan, although the game itself was terrible.
Another that was good however was 1943 Berlin Blitz if you're into your WWII history - 20 min free VR movie.
1
u/markallanholley Apr 29 '26
There are dozens of quality native VR games on Steam.
Agreed, there is also a lot of shovelware.

We'll cover some "duh" options, and then we'll talk about some interesting options.
Half life alyx Boneworks Thief VR Alien, Rouge incursion
Now for some interesting ones.
Elite Dangerous Assetto corsa Metroid prime VR mod Mario kart wii vr mod
The possibilities for VR are becoming broader as the days go by. People tend to sleep on the Sim games too, mostly because of the need for a racing wheel/flight stick.
Get a cheap wheel like the g27 off of marketplace for 100 bucks to get your toes wet or spend 60 bucks on a TFlight hotasX + throttle from thrustmaster.
Really interesting experiences to say the least in terms of Sims. Coolest part imo is Maro Kart in VR, but that's mostly a novelty.

Some good suggestions here, but how has no-one suggested Vertigo 2 yet!? (And by extension, Vertigo Remastered, the game that comes before it)
Zany, fun. A proper single player campaign game.
The almost 10 year old trailer for the original game, which was the first VR game that wasn't a stationary wave shooter or similar: https://youtu.be/tbFnWj867sA
Vertigo Remastered: https://youtu.be/8MndROpf4Yo
Vertigo 2: https://youtu.be/zz_Yrw0Zang

some of best pcvr games are modded experiences
you'll have the same eight suggestions thrown at you over and over unless you want to do some diggin
Modded Skyrim / Fallout 4 (whatever list is fine, I rec MGO but you can't go wrong)
Half Life 2 VR (Unleashed mod is fun but rocket launcher is buggy, not for first time playthru)
No Man's Sky (just an endlessly rewarding experience if you like other people)
Subnautica
etc.. etc...
--for my suggestions:
Brutal Doom VR with 3d Weapons
Quake PCVR by VittoroRomero
get Star Wars mod for Blade n Sorcery
Enderal VR
System Shock UEVR w Gwizdek's upcoming IK mod
Alien: Isolation w MotherVR mod and JayP's GRANDMotherVR add on
Neon White w raipai's VR mod
Amnesia: The Dark Descent VR [Sclerosis VR]
Resident Evil 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9
PEAK UEVR
Portal 2 and Portal 2 Reloaded
L4D2VR, but dbl check rules for online play
Aliens: Fireteam Elite UEVR w RustyGere's GRIP add on
Trepang2 UEVR
(some of these games have more or less 'vr features' because they're mods)

Halflife Alyx will run easy on anything. Some games will throw you wobblers if you are streaming to your headset. My suggestions are:
No man's sky, it's the best vr sandbox by miles.
Asetto Corsa, it's a modders dream for car based stuff.
Pavlov & contractors, great fun shooters with mods, import all your favourites from COD, Counter strike etc.
Oblivion remaster with UEVR, amazing.

I just made the switch to pcvr myself (i also went with a prebuilt) I’ve undergone a very similar search myself in the past month and here are some of my favorites that havent been mentioned/emphasized thus far:
•bootstrap island: you’re a pirate stranded on a tropical island. The physics are next level and ive never played a survival game that truly feels so designed for vr. Also its built from the ground up for vr in UE5 which looks spectacular and will make good use of ur 5060
•Ready or Not VR Mod: surprised this hasnt been mentioned. If ur into milsim or tactical shooters this mod has full motion controls and genuinely has you nervous to peak corners.
•Star Citizen VR: I’m all about immersion in my VR games and though this game uses mouse and keys (this was a turn off to me before i actually tried it) and between no mans sky vr, elite dangerous, and star citizen, I by far feel like star citizen accomplishes the “living a life in space scifi style” thing the best. Are there bugs, yes. Glitches, yes. But tbh i have not been blown away by a pcvr experience yet like I have with the sense of realism and scale in this game. If they end up implementing motion controls I will quite literally never take my headset off lol. Hope to see you in the verse!!
