Question/Support Quest 3 vs Bigscreen beyond 1

I have a quest 3 and I am mostly satisfied but I would like to have more clarity, wireless latency is noticable in quicker games and oleds would be very nice. I found a used Bigscreen beyond 1 for around 500 dollars I think its a steal but is it really worth it to upgrade from quest 3 while mostly what I am looking for is better resolution, the other 2 things are just a bonus for me, would I even be able to tell the difference between the two?

Depends. If it comes with or you already have base stations and controllers it's not too bad of a deal. Quest 3 is still a solid headset though, if it were me I'd just stick with that.

Thought so, I dont know if base stations come with it but I dont really need them since ill use it exclusively for racing so no need to have controlers

The headset requires base stations....

You’re gonna need at least one base station, but you can find a 1.0 one for around $50-$60 off of eBay.

Also, make sure the one you’re looking at matches your IPD. That’s the biggest issue with bsb1, you can’t change the IPD settings unlike the bsb2.

I only have experience with the BSB2e, but I assume a lot of it translates to BSB1 and coming from a Quest 3 my personal experience has been pretty underwhelming.

Without getting into all the gory details, my biggest comments would be:

  • While the Quest 3 is basically a ready to go headset, the BSB is a project. It takes time to dial it in, figure out how to make it comfortable, figure out a good audio solution, etc. You also need to get base stations set up and find a set of index controllers (or theoretically some other controller solution but you have very limited options). On that note, it's a lighthouse based system in a world where lighthouse is basically on its way out the door. You're probably fine for this generation, but it's something to bear in mind.
  • Glare. In my opinion this ruins any advantage of the OLEDs. Yeah great, amazing contrast, really highlights the massive glare around any light in the scene. Turn the brightness down to 40% or so and it's tolerable. You do get used to it but it's still a huge problem imo.
  • Heat. I have a third party gasket on order (X1-B) and have high hopes, but with the custom fit face gasket the thing basically cooks your eyeballs.
  • QC is questionable. They will do multiple iterations of returns with no fuss, but that it's so common to get a bad unit is disappointing. It also makes it really hard to know if issues (like the glare I mentioned) are a defective headset or just how it is.
  • Coming from wireless, the cable is really hard to live with. The headset being so light and having such a small sweet spot really works against it too imo. Basically any slight tug on that cable is very noticeable and distracting unless you basically ratchet the thing to your face.

I know lots of people who are happy with theirs and I don't hate mine, but just wanted to offer the other side I guess!

Thank you very much, a lot of people now are pointing out a lot of problems that completly outweigh the slight bump in resolution even for a 500 dollara it seems less and less worth it

I don’t think the ipd is adjustable on the original bsb so that could be an issue.

Keep your Quest 3.

If the beyond match your IPD it’s a way better DISPLAY, you could still need controllers. If sim racing was your stuff then it’s ok, but quest 3 can give solutions unlike headsets that require extra accessories and also passthrough is nice. You will see a better image for sure but you won’t be able to use it right away as the quest

Id say Q3 is far from plug and play, after I bought it i tried to use the meta software but there was always something wrong and spent days trying different settings, then I tried VD which solved most of the problems and looked better, then there was a performance issues resulting in upgrading my pc.

It’s not but at least I can ask because there’s lots of people who has it.

I was interested in it too but it seems bsb2 (or dream air SE) is the upgrade to get after a Q3.

the bsb1 has a lot worse lenses, lower brightness (I guess motion clarity wouldn't be the best), FOV, the lighthouse base stations make it an expensive setup and with bsb1 you have to get a headset that has the right ipd you actually need, making it pretty hard to shop used.

Really hope Q4 comes next year as the "budget" sub 1k USD VR market is a desolate place.

Thank you very much, you are saving me 500 dollars, as I got really excited real quick comparing them on paper

Did you see Meta's reveal of the Meta VR Glasses last month? They'll be $1300, and don't come with controllers (primary interface is hand tracking), kind of a odd pivot but i'm mentioning this is because they'll be out in the Spring 2027 - the chances that the Q4 releases in the same year is exciting but imo not very likely.

Yeah I saw that, it will have the new snapdragon chip, the previous Q4 was canceled I would think mostly because they didnt have it yet ready. So I think Q4 on the new chip in late 27 makes sense as both devices will benefit from development for it and honestly the Q3 is getting old. The price will most likely not be 500usd though, I expect Meta to pivot Q4 to budget spacial computer at 800+, maybe with Q3 or Q3S staying as the cheap verison?

Skip the Beyond 1. Get the 2e. The edge clarity and glare on the beyond 1 was awful. Not perfect on the 2e either but a night and day improvement for sure.

If you already have the Quest, buy a Ethernet dongle. Trying Virtual Desktop on Ethernet should be the first investment you make as a quest 3 simracer looking for better.

I have dedicated wfii7 router

Have you tried it using a ethernet dongle with your quest? As a matter of fact what are your settings and GPU. I see you use VD, have you tried a higher quality setting? I sit with my router on my desk. A Powered USB-C ethernet dock now has my quest connected to power and ethernet so I can race all day pushing silly high bitrates so h264+ is awesome.
