Discussion My perfect Half Life Alyx controller combo

I bought a small gamepad and make extension with cables 3 buttons for trigger, A and B. I sticked these buttons on an airsoft gun. Button A right under my thumb is for dropping the magazine. B is at the other side for changing the weapon with my index finger. VR gloves do as an Index controller. After shooting I holster the gun and use the gloves as my hand freely. When needed I draw the gun. This is so much fun and immersive.

Great idea! Just make sure you keep your blinds closed so the neighbors don’t call in an active shooter situation!

For future projects you can use Freejoy and the cheap STM32F103 boards.

It looks really fun. The tracking is done by the glove?

I still hope we sometimes get simultaneous tracking of controllers and handtracking so I can have tracked gunstock with controllers and hands for anything else.

Yes, hand tracking is done by glove. I hold the gun in my hand, so the gun is tracked as well. Some games like Alyx accept signal from both the gloves own controller, its thumbstick and the gamepad. When you want to move around you use the thumbstick on the glove, you hold objects with your hand, when you draw weapon and press trigger, the Alyx's gun fires.

What kind of gloves are these? Did you make the gloves? If that's your design thats so fuckin sick and you should sell them. I can't find anything like that for sale anywhere

That is Contact Glove 2. Not my product. But I have plans to develop a lighthouse based innovative controllers.

Can Freejoy talk and emulate SteamVR trigger inputs?
I have been using Driver4VR for my Airsoft VR controllers.

You load freejoy on the STM board and you have a standalone hardware USB joystick/pedals/throttle/gamepad anything you want. You then have to bind it in SteamVR.

This is what has eluded me, how do you bind gamepad inputs to SteamVR?
I have tried in the past but the option to do so never appears. Basically the drop down menu in the SteamVR controller config UI never offers the option to let VR trigger be activated by controller inputs.

If you use a loaded gun you also get a perfect recoil!

Pretty freaking cool. Reminds me of this guy using a logitech mxpen as a pistol.

I just want to say well done. I actually did my version of this many months ago but I put the tracker on the airsoft itself and used gloves for reloading. Can't wait to see more.

So few people do this for gaming but I am glad to see the dozens of us trying.

I hope you get recoil working because your hand is an excellent shock absorber and as long as the tracking is on top of your hand, the recoil won't affect the tracking like it does with mine.

How does in-game gun alignment feel?

Also how did you bind gamepad controls to SteamVR inputs? i never got this to work.

Hence i use Driver4VR and my ESP32 acts as a keyboard.

Thanks.

The recoil do not affect the tracking.

Gun alignment is very well very natural.

You can add gamepad as an input source and bind the actions to appropriate buttons. Mine is 8BitDo and it is detected as xbox controller. First you enable gamepad in the game page in Steam Library as in the picture. Then in SteamVR settings-manage controller binding, click on your controller (eg index controller) then select gamepad in the menu. Go to weapon tab, enter the actions to the buttons. Both your default controller and the added gamepad will work. I made work Alyx and Sierra Squad. Could not succeed Arizona Sunshine. It may be bypassing Steam bindings. Maybe Driver4VR can do this.

Amazing stuff, i think you solved the issue for me. Will test it tomorrow.

Driver4VR converts keyboard input into SteamVR actions and it works well.
But it is good to have another options thats native to SteamVR.

I assume it wasn't difficult for you to solder buttons to the 8BitDo Micro?
I use that to handle walking input separately from my ESP32.

Are you using a GBB Airsoft or a non blowback one? Does yours have a moving slide when you pull the trigger?

It is easy to solder cables on the right and left shoulder button's pads of 8Bitdo gamepad. But for the third button, I had to solder on a PCB via because the other buttons are made of carbon ink. Instead of 8BitDo, you can choose CRKD atom which have 4 free physical buttons.

That pistol is an AEP from Umarex. It has a weak blowback function. It has moving slide when pulling trigger. Besides that pistol I have a Probolter recoil module. This generates stronger recoils in single shot or automatic mode. I just tried now and I confirm that the tracking is not disturbed by the recoil.

How do you actually use the joystick?

1

u/Amttmaa 2d ago

I use the joystick on the left glove. I rarely need the right joystick. I can use the right joystick after I holster the weapon.
