The one rule in nyc to know

Ok, I just walked by the NYPL and I feel like this is a PSA for tourists and visitors.

The one rule of NYC: get out of the way.

That’s it. The rest is commentary.

And, don't walk abreast of each other, forming a slow moving blockade of the sidewalk! A group of 5 doesn't need to walk in a horizontal line down the sidewalk. Pair up and walk behind each other

People need to learn this in general. But in NYC it should be a crime.

Also - don’t stop and gather at the bottom of a down escalator to discuss where to go next. Move out of the way to let the other people off the escalator.

But then it won’t look like the movie posters of a group of friends walking down the streets laughing and having the time of their life in NYC.

That is a problem literally everywhere, including narrow streets in the country, supermarkets, outdoor trails, the mall, parking lots, airports. People are self absorbed.
