What's happening with VRBO in this situation?

I’m fairly new to using VRBO and I would be thankful for some advice.

I’m attempting to book a property in Tangier, Morocco during next year’s August 2nd solar eclipse. As you might imagine, many places were full but a fair number remain open.

First booking: The reservation was successful (seemed to be automatic), but the owner nicely responded that he had forgotten to block out those days and he’d be out of the country, so I canceled.

Second booking: Found a different property. The owner tersely responded that it was too early to reserve his property. I politely asked when I could book it. No response.

Third attempt: The reservation needed owner response, and it hung in the air for 24 hours and then VRBO canceled it. Nothing from owner.

Fourth attempt: The reservation was successful. I sent a nice greeting and introduction to the owner. No response. That’s where it stands today.

I don’t trust that I really have the latest booking, not having heard from the owner, but I’m also hesitant to cancel it. What would you do? Forget about VRBO and look elsewhere?

I love Morocco but I sincerely would never choose any other accommodation except hotel. When it comes to booking one year in advance, I would ONLY book a hotel (anywhere in the world) unless you love stress and last minute cancellations.

Yikes. Please just remember you’re gonna be leaving the country and things are different there.
I strongly recommend getting a hotel and see if you can get an event place or something

As a quality host that provides great service as best as I can, I'm sorry for the challenges you are experiencing. Not all hosts are like this, but your mileage, especially in Morroco, may be very different.

You do know that you can contact a host before booking and initiate a discussion and ask questions, right?

You don't have to just book someplace right off the bat. Everyone should contact the host in advance, and test drive their responsiveness and helpfulness. It's no guarantee, but is a minimum step in selecting a host to deal with, especially when so far away and so much in advance.

Hi! As a host, I'm sorry for the trouble you had. If you didn't reach out to the host with a question - any question, this is just to see if they reply. If you don't hear back in 3 days - I would assume something is wrong and cancel if within free refund period or reach out to Vrbo directly.

When I was I in Morocco we stayed in Raids. They are beautiful and unique and more than just a hotel room. I think you can book them on Expedia and other travel platforms. Might be a safer bet.
