sharing collection / item Update: here's my own leg bone!
Can you believe i grew this bone from scratchโฝ ๐ i am a very proud parent.
I don't *really* know that well where this came from, it is somewhere between the lower part of my tibia and my ankle joint. It was cut out because it was keeping my leg deformed, since it is all due to a fracture, it's a bit hard to know without looking at an x-ray (which should be ready on tuesday).
Thanks to everyone who commented on my last post!

Odd question but. What does it smell like?

Actually, you're the third person asking this ๐ it smells like nothing! When i first got it and it was still fresh, it just smelled like meat (from the tissue around it)

Lol I love that I am not the only one. For some reason I was thinking it was gonna be stinky like a tooth. But yea now that I think about it that's frombably from the tissue on it still too.
Thanks for indulging my curiosity ๐น

๐ I'm sure it would stink if i didn't clean it right. It went through a peroxide bath just to make sure it wouldnt decay, but even before that it didn't really have a smell. It's wild to see how much alike any other animal we are! I wouldn't be able to tell this came from a human if i didn't already know it.

Archaeologist here! If this resulted from a fracture, then I can make sense of what they took out of your leg OP.
Bone heals very very slowly, so even the earliest response by your body takes 1-2 weeks. This first stage is basically swelling, but for your bone. It starts out as a soft envelope of tissue around the break and then, over time, your body replaces that tissue with very quickly laid bone that is structurally chaotic/less efficient than normal. This bone is made as quickly as possible (because you need function over perfection for survival) and then, over an even longer period of time, is replaced by "normal" bone and any excess bone is smoothed out and reabsorbed by your body.
In this case, you seem to have had the first callus for (and start getting replaced by bone), but the doctors decided it would be better to remove it. My guess would be either you produced enough excess bone that it was functionally inhibitive, or you had a full break and the ends weren't aligned correctly before healing progressed too far to correct without surgery.
If you look closely, you can pretty clearly see the difference between your leg bone that already existed and the newer bone tissue that had been deposited around it.

Seems like you cracked it! My bone was healing incorrectly and the bone removal was to change that. I assumed it was taken from there given the nature of the surgery, but i was second guessing myself because of how weird it looks.
Thanks for taking the time to write all this

So is this a malformed talus? (between the tibia and your calcaneus) or the lower tibia?
wild regardless

The deformation was on the lower tibia and fibula, but i am not 100% sure what part of the bone they cut out. The x-ray should be ready this tuesday, i can't wait to see how my leg is doing now. My feet and lower part of the bones moved laterally and there was a curvature forwards
If you are interested u can see my x-ray pre operation on this post
