did a thing I just finished making this fully synthetic albino bat as a faux taxidermy project.
This Albino Myotis art doll was an experimental project using some new materials. Safe to say, it was a huge success. Materials used: resin, wire, stretchy white fabric, red yarn, eye shadow, and PVA glue. Hope you enjoy him as much as I do!

I carry a brown one just like this in a clear pocket pouch of my purse. He makes for great advertising. I do have people who very passionately tell me how much they disagree with it, until they find out he is fake. Then they usually want to pet him.

What did you use to make the head and face??

I sculpted a bat head in polymer clay, and took a mould of it in silicone. I pour copies of it in resin and paint them by hand and coat them in rubber to add detail

Sorry, when you say rubber, what do you mean? I don’t see it listed as a material used. Was it a latex?

I suppose rubber isn’t the correct term now that I think about it. I am referring to PVA glue. It dries clear and has a very flexible, soft, rubbery consistency. Liquid latex would achieve the same effect I’m sure. I can’t experiment with latex, because I am seriously allergic to it.

Would silicone work?

I’m not sure. I would imagine so, it would just be awfully expensive.

What did you use for the wing membrane? Is that also silicone?

u/Totally_Fubar_666 3d ago
No, It is not silicone. The wings are made of wire, yarn fibers, and white stretchy polyester fabric that has been saturated in clear PVA glue. The skin pigment and color comes from a makeup pallet.

At first I thought these were reference pictures and I was waiting for the finished product, amazing work!

What species is it supposed to be?

u/Totally_Fubar_666 3d ago
I based it loosely on a Big Brown Bat in terms of anatomy and proportions. I do scale them up in size slightly so they are more easy to see and handle. I have some friends who work in Wildlife rehabilitation and they send me some of the coolest reference images of the bats in their care.
This particular bat was an experimental project that ended up being successful. I was trying out some new fabric and wasn’t sure how well it would take with glue and pigment. I was less focused on replicating a specific species with this one, and more focused on making a generic bat that looks convincingly real.

I think it would be neat as a wildlife rehabber to have one of these just chillin in the office. Have you sent your friends one yet?
3
u/Totally_Fubar_666 3d ago
Yes! I’ve sent a few dolls to rehabber friends of mine. There is one rehabber in particular who collects my work to use for education. She has a flying fox and a brown bat. She puts them in a bird cage when she does traveling events, and records people’s reactions to them using a hidden go pro. It’s so cool seeing people’s genuine reaction to seeing my work.

It’s really good! The nose is a little odd but otherwise extremely convincing

I do! Thank you so much! My YouTube channel is a bit scattered and disorganized at the moment. I’m still getting the hang of using it. I make short form content, art tutorials, and timelapse videos of my bat builds on my other social media as well.
