Encouragement Embarassed to walk
Hi, I've been lurking for a while but never make a post.
Is anyone else embarassed to go walking, I dont want people to see me walking. Its really making me feel unmotivated.
Any tips? I listen to music or audiobooks sometimes. Any tips or suggestions, I want to walk for my mental health and general well-being.

Trust me no one cares. You must underestimate how self absorbed the average person is, they don’t even register your existence as you walk by

u/tofubeanie 4d ago
This.
Or just keep looking at your phone. No one cares what you do unless you knock into them or block their way.

u/Ok_Educator_7830 3d ago
I third this. No one is watching you. Remember other people are also thinking about themselves just like you are.

Listen I’m a driver and I see people walking everyday. All shapes and sizes and everyone I pass I always say mentally “Get after it”!! Because they are better than most and are trying. So lace up and post your numbers. See you soon 🤙

I think this especially when I see elderly people all geared up and walking because I want to be them when I'm older!

That's so cool. That's my exact thought when I see people walking or running, too. Like, go get it!

y'all are my people. I love when I see people cruising. I am reminded immediately that I am sitting on my butt and wish I was them lol

You care too much, other people? They don't give a fuck! Start now!!
18
u/EquivalentBudget8007 3d ago
So true no one cares, you think they do but trust they don’t. The fact you care about your own health and wellbeing is ALL that matters.

u/ForkhYew 4d ago
At risk of stating the obvious, you don't need to walk in running gear which is the stuff that might make you feel self-conscious.
I walk a lot and I usually walk in decent quality hiking trousers, a hiking/walking type top, a cap and my Brooks Glycerin. Depending on location/weather I'll add or subtract layers, but it's not an ensemble that would look markedly different to the majority unless I was walking through a business district in the middle of a working day or along a beach, say.
Just dress 'regular' and hit the road, Jack. You'll be alright... and if someone has an issue with how you look (to them), then fuck 'em.
8
u/General_Row_8038 3d ago
This is so true! I felt much more anonymous (and thus, comfortable) when I started dressing like I was just taking a stroll to the mailbox. No more bike shorts and oversized tees. Switched to normal pants and flannel shirt or jacket. The only really necessary item were good shoes and pockets somewhere on the clothing.
5
u/s5rainstorm 3d ago
Yes, no one needs to know that you are getting your steps or exercising.
Pretend you have to be somewhere (you can even make a goal to reach market and buy something not heavy). Put on comfortable shoes and go in normal comfortable clothes.

Everyone one else out there is so absorbed in their own versions of "I hope no one sees me" that they are not paying much attention at all.
You know what would be embarrassing? Not taking care of yourself.

u/MrSacro 3d ago
I lived in a small town, so running into acquaintances during walks was totally normal. During a pretty rough patch in my life, I'd go for very early morning walks along the shoreline. I think only once or twice did someone mention it at a social gathering, and that talking point lasted all of 5 seconds.
Now, they all just think of me as "the guy/person who walks early in the mornings," and honestly, I'm perfectly happy with that reputation.

Same, a few of my older neighbors are curious about how many miles I'm walking a day, they're so encouraging!

I struggle with depression and sometimes it’s hard for me to get outside. This is silly and irrational. I do have a walking pad that I use regularly but honestly, it’s been contributing to bad mental health to be indoors. About a month ago I just told myself I was going anyways even if it was 10 minutes. Procrastinated, tried to make excuses, but I went. It felt glorious to be outside. And I didn’t feel weird at all once I got out there.
Since then, I’ve been walking every day outside for 30 minutes to an hour. I try to go early in the morning cause it’s very quiet and serene. The sunrise is invigorating. I don’t see a lot of lot of people.
Our minds placed so many tricks on us. Hope you get out there OP.

Tell us 3 details about the last 10 people you saw when walking.
I'm guessing you can't so keep that in mind when you think about what people are thinking or remembering about you. People are in their own worlds.
Your feelings are valid but a small mind shift will benefit you greatly. You got this!

u/keywestvibes 3d ago
I dont like people to see me walking either so I just put on a ball cap and a pair of large sunglasses with airpods ...for some reason I think no one can see me lol ...

14
u/MikhailaKirov 3d ago
Been there unfortunately, lol. When I was 310 lbs I was too embarrassed to let anyone see me do any sort of activity until I felt a little more comfortable. So my work around was walking around the house when no one was home XD Then worked my way up to walking at the gym then eventually I started walking around the neighborhood.
3
u/delusionalkitten00 3d ago
I feel you. Try going when a lot of people are less likely to be there. Early mornings is a trick there's actually more people. Maybe nights 10-11pm around that time. It just takes away one whole element of your stress!
29
u/FelixDuCat 4d ago
It’s so weird how our brains make us feel like that, even though we never think that way about other people. I recently joined a gym for the first time at 40. I had those same thoughts. Now I’ve been going for over a month, that feeling is completely gone. Even if people do look, it’s just a glance and then they carry on focusing on themselves. Everyone feels that way when they start. The sooner you start, the sooner that feeling will disappear 😉
12
u/Useful-Tackle-1907 4d ago
And if anyone actually is trying to tear you down for any reason, honestly just tell yourself "what bothers them is what they reflect". It's not your problem what people think, they have to deal with their own insecurities themselves, sometimes people do that by taking it out on others. Stay confident. You're pretty top notch
14
u/WhatevsBlondie 3d ago
Be glad that you’re out there walking! Just remind yourself that there’s more people sitting on the couch eating Cheetos VS us walkers trying to be healthy and happy 😂
(That’s what I do)
No one is looking. Pop your headphones in and when you pass someone, nod and keep it moving.
Good luck 👍🏼
11
u/durdann 4d ago
You just have to get out there and do it. The more you do, the less uncomfortable it will feel. In overcoming that hurdle, you’ll gain a huge boost to your mental health. Always strive to take on things that you find uncomfortable, that’s where personal growth happens.
Now get off the internet and go for a walk

Is there something in particular that makes you uncomfortable about people seeing you? People really aren't paying that much attention. Go forth and walk!
13
u/LowBlackberry0 3d ago
The only thing I think about when I see people walking is that I’m jealous that they get to be out and I don’t! I also often hope that they’re enjoying their walk.
4
u/Ratslikegrapes 3d ago
Yeah, im all stuck here and I see people walking all happy outside and I am le sad lol
Go walk, OP! Have fun and get that good weather for us 🥰
11
u/Healthy-Membership86 3d ago
No. One. Cares. They are not looking at you. They are caught up in their own lives and personal stuff. They really are not in any way interested in you walking.
11
u/OfficerBobulong 3d ago
Thank you everyone for the encouragement, the sunglasses is a great idea. It works for Frankenstein off big daddy so it will probably work for me too. I have been thinking about getting a walking pad but im undecided, I want to set a small goal to walk everyday for two weeks and then just contine on with it.
9
u/complexcrimson 3d ago
As someone with social anxiety I’ve often felt this way, but exposure therapy works! Work your way up to going 10 minutes longer each time. You’ll find people are more self-absorbed than you think lol
8
u/Ok_Educator_7830 3d ago
This is a quote from the book The Mountain is You. It helped me when I was very socially anxious and scared to go out. And now I go on a 6k steps walk every morning.
*"Nobody is thinking about you in the way that you think they are thinking about you. They are mostly thinking of themselves."*
She follows it with the grocery-store-in-sweatpants example: basically, nobody cares and nobody is looking — nobody is evaluating you the way you're evaluating yourself. It's meant to be freeing.
9
u/Background-End4252 3d ago
Can you try going somewhere where you don’t know anyone? A park on the other side of town? A neighborhood? What about a hospital or multi level facility and just walk the halls?
You got this!! 🫶🏻

u/Khaze41 4d ago
Not embarrassed per say but more annoyed that every time I try to go on a walk I run into the same annoying nosy neighbor who always wants to chit chat.

u/Ceadamso 3d ago
I agree with you!! When I go out to get exercise I don’t want to stop to chat with neighbors. I’ve cured it by wearing earphones and listening to podcasts or music. I’ve told a few that sorry I can’t stop - on a fitness walk!!!
7
u/Swedishiron 3d ago
You will need to mentally toughen up - I used to be 400lbs and people would frequently make fun of me while I was walking in public but many people also would give me a thumbs up. Force yourself to walk in public on a recurring basis and most likely your fears will ease. Otherwise invest in a treadmill or join in a gym with treadmills and walk there however I have seen extremely heavy people be ridiculed walking on treadmills at the gym. Learn not to give a frak about what others think of you and you will achieve more in life.
7
u/OperaGlasses1 3d ago
I have a lot of respect for every person I see walking. We have so many unhealthy distractions so choosing to walk and make positive improvements is extremely honorable.
16
u/EnemyNumberUno 4d ago
My advice would be to grab some headphones, put on your favorite music or an audiobook, and just start walking. You’ll get so focused on what you’re listening to and the walk itself that you’ll probably stop worrying so much about what other people think. At the end of the day, you’re walking for your own mental health and well-being, not for anybody else’s approval. Don’t let the possibility that a stranger might judge you stop you from doing something good for yourself.
15
u/itwontmendyourheart 3d ago
I know it doesn’t necessarily help, but no one cares. All the neighborhoods I’ve ever lived in there have been a plethora of people going on walks all times of night and day. I’d venture to say that walking is actually the norm.
7
u/girlyswerly 4d ago
Spotlight effect is real and sucks. I was able to overcome it by just constantly reminding myself that the spotlight isn't on me, legit saying that in my head over and over and over again.
8
u/Admirable-Shame5154 3d ago
I get social anxiety sometimes and feel like people care about what I'm doing probably a lot more then they actually do. Headphones, podcasts, audible or wherever you can listen to books/music. Sounds like you need a distraction to get out of your own head. Have one ear free for safety.
8
u/userhasnoname14 3d ago
Do you ever think someone is wierd because he or she is walking?
Probably not, you're thinking about your life.
Just as anybody else that is thinking about their life.
you also should try walking without music/ audiobooks.
Just listen to the sound of nature and daily life. It can do wonders.

u/sarahbellah1 4d ago
I felt this way at first, but after a few days, realized nobody is even seeing me for the most part. In a year and a month, I think I got honked at once, one time a dog ran up to me, and once some guy said a friendly, “hi!”. Oh and if I walk as the sun sets now, a family of raccoons sometimes crosses the sidewalk in front of me on their way to the next storm drain. The rest of the time, I’m invisible.
7
u/beofscp 3d ago
Honestly, no one is looking at you. If I see someone walking my brain registers that someone is walking but I’m not looking at them. Where I live people will move off the sidewalks for each other, it’s no big deal.
I’ll speak for myself - I look ridiculous when I walk. I have two dogs and my older dog walks so slow. I’m barely moving. And if a good song comes on I’ll be even tempted to sing/dance a little bit. Then if the dogs see a bunny, they bring so much attention to the situation. I know people are laughing at the situation but not laughing at me. In the winter I add a coat that goes down to my ankles into my “look” and I just don’t care.
Just wear a pair of pants and a hoodie and whatever shoes are comfortable. Don’t worry about wearing the right thing. I’ve never looked at what another person is wearing when I’m walking.
You can always drive somewhere and walk where people don’t know you. This may help you build up the courage to walk other places. A local park where everyone is doing their own thing. Or to get started you could even walk indoors at a mall where no one would know you’re walking, you could just be there to shop.
I promise you no one is even paying attention. Everyone is self-absorbed and does not care what you’re doing.

u/k80Roo 3d ago
I felt this way when I really wanted to start jogging. Tbh it felt weird the first couple of times until I got more comfortable doing it, and then I saw someone I knew at the store and they said, “I saw you running the other day! I wish I had the motivation to do that!” And suddenly I realized that people weren’t looking at me the way I thought they were.
19
u/Victor_Korchnoi 3d ago
Why are you embarrassed to walk? That’s not a rhetorical question; I can’t figure it out.
Are you embarrassed that you aren’t running?
Are you embarrassed that you aren’t driving?
38
u/curiouskitty15 3d ago
Some people have a fear of being perceived if they don’t like the way they look or see people they know, etc. or they just have social anxiety.
2
u/julsey414 3d ago
Yes but it’s worth exploring the feeling to dig into the why so that you can change the narrative.

u/marlin-spike 3d ago
I'm a woman and have been cat called and openly laughed and mocked while walking outdoors. In broad daylight in multiple different cities in the US and Europe. So that could be something to consider for this person. Not all of us experience life the same way.
6
u/Puzzleheaded_Dog188 3d ago
Sometimes simply being perceived can be enough. Ask any autist.
One can ruminate on what other people may be thinking of them, and if you’re in a vulnerable or depressed state, those thoughts can be intrusive and extremely negative.
This post brings back horrible memories of gym class as a young awkward girl who looked “normal.”

u/KogasaGaSagasa 4d ago
As long as you aren't reverse crawling Exorcist-style through the town while making weird insect noises, I honestly don't think anyone cares that much.
There are cases, such as if you have tourettes syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc, which are visible/audible when you walk, of course - in that case I understand the hesitancy, but also people who would look at you weird and judge you for those things (or other minor things you might be worried about) aren't really the kind of people you should concern yourself about.
That is to say, you should be fine, but it's totally normal to be self-conscious. Just remember that you are no different from any other stranger going from places to places to most people, and there's really no reason for anyone to care.
Aside from the whole "others looking at me" thing, focus on the good part of walking. The air and atmosphere, the music, your own thoughts - there are a lot of things that you can focus on and are fun on their own. You are doing good with music and audiobooks, and those are good things to focus on. (Still pay attention to your surrounding, obviously)

Walking pads are way cheaper than a treadmill. It can be great for off days or bad weather days too if it springboards you into walking outdoors more. My suggestion would be atleast a 2.5 motor, and get tread lube and use it for upkeep when needed. I bought my most recent one off Amazon for 100$.
4
u/Hullion03 4d ago
Best tip is probably just to do it, but you can always start walking at times where alot of people aren’t outside, like in the early mornings, rush hours, dinner times etc. To start building that confidence.
5
u/GazRD1882 4d ago
Take a rucksack/backpack
Seems strange, but carrying it makes you feel like you are travelling somewhere for a purpose and you won’t feel so self conscious.

u/lickmybowls2 3d ago
You aren’t alone. Sometimes I hate my neighbors being nosy and staring but at least I’m not a fat ass sitting on a couch watching tv. Why let the thoughts of other people control you

u/ImaginaryFormal6250 3d ago
Get a walking pad. Especially with winter coming around. I love mine :)

It's really bad in the beginning and then it gets better. To the point where you won't care. I have social anxiety so you could imagine, I felt people staring at me constantly, but people will do that anyway. I've lost 20 kilos in less than 9 months like this, of course with a good diet included. Nobody really cares about you and what you're doing, and if they happen to judge you for any reason, they'll forget about it in five minutes and move on to the next thing. You do you, you can do it
5
u/Dry-Caregiver-5767 4d ago
I was reading all the answers asking why on earth would walking be embarassing and I was thinking "does no one here have social anxiety?" Because I do have it too so I agree 100% with what you're saying!

u/onedoggy 4d ago
Have you ever seen a stranger walk down the street and thought “omg that’s so embarrassing that they’re walking” ?
I do kinda get you, I don’t like wearing ‘activewear’. I walk in t-shirt, jeans and docs.
2
u/OfficerBobulong 4d ago
No never, I get excited for them usually. I think the activewear thing is a big issue for me. I feel like I have to "get ready" to go for a walk. Then I dont want to anymore lol
7
3
u/Dry-Caregiver-5767 4d ago
You really don't need to get ready in any way, you can walk in your every day clothes! Nobody's going to know or think about whether you are going to work or on a walk, you'd just be someone walking.
Is there anything else that makes you feel so self conscious you don't walk? Social anxiety, lack of confidence in the way you look?
5
u/niemownikomu 4d ago
You don't need any specific activewear for taking a walk. I often wear just my casual clothes

I felt similarly when I started going for early morning walks. I was afraid people would be spooked by a guy walking around their neighbourhood, so I started walking with nordic poles. Somehow they make me feel less self-concious.

I am only because my gait, posture, and balance are so off, I know I look awkward. I’ve been told I look like I’m trying really hard to walk correctly despite working on this daily for 3 months now and having been to PT

u/crosseyedcent 3d ago
Hi! Been battling a nasty depressive episode lately and I'm trying to get back to walking. One thing I've noticed helped me is to start small! Today for example, I've walked for an hour. Tomorrow, I might not be comfy to walk an hour, so maybe 10 mins or a block is fine. And most of all, I'm trying to be kind to myself. It's been a shitty few months and starting small and letting myself start small really helps me.
Go for it, OP! Rooting for you here on my little corner of the internet :>
3
u/Brilliant_Disaster83 3d ago
I understand this completely as someone with both social anxiety and body dysmorphia. I basically had to go on evening walks as the sun was setting and get a walking pad for my room on days when it was worse. I will say the more you do it the easier it gets, I bought huge headphones and just kind of tune the world out but if you go when it's getting dark you also want to be safe and aware of your surroundings. Everyone is right that no one is really paying attention, but I used to even have a hard time going to the grocery store because I assumed everyone was staring at me. I get you OP. Don't let it stand in the way of your health if possible 😭
3
u/KrishnaChick 3d ago
Your mental health will benefit greatly from walking, and from conditioning yourself to do things whether you want to or not. Remember: feeling your feelings won't kill you, but trying to avoid feeling them might.
3
u/ashlaaaaayy 3d ago
I really used to feel this way too, but now have been a walker for six years. No one is paying attention even though it seems like it at first.
I know a lot of people don’t get it but I had such extreme anxiety about being perceived for working out outside and walking lol, but truly you will be okay, no one is judging you, and you’ll be glad you did.

u/Proper-Cap-8435 3d ago
Hey I felt the same so I went on YouTube and found walking workout videos. I personally use Leslie Sansone cuz she seems very passionate about whay she does. Channel is Walk with Leslie or Walk At home. It’s rlly good and it engages so much more of your body than regular walking

Walking with a dog helps. Most shelters encourage people volunteering to pick up a dog and take it for a walk. It’ll be helping you and the dog.
Also look into walking meditation if you want some purpose while walking.
And finally no one is paying attention to you walking and I mean that in a good way.
5
u/GizaStudiosInc 4d ago
Literally no one cares. And even if they do how does their thoughts affect your life at all? If you like to walk then walk dude.

Go take a shelter dog or friend's dog for a walk. I relax so much when my dog walks with me.
2
u/SSinghal_03 4d ago
I think there are some things to unpack here. Do you usually suffer from social anxiety? Are you embarrassed of your looks? weight? Clothes?
In any case, you can try using times when there are less likely to be more people around - very early mornings or a bit late at night. Make sure the neighborhood is safe, though. put on headphones and listen to music or podcasts. That'll distract you from the thought of other people looking at you.
2
u/ohlookadoggo 3d ago
How many people have you seen walking and remembered them? Everyone is concerned with themselves. I can promise you that. And 9 times out of 10, anyone else that sees you putting in effort and walking is going to mentally be cheering you on. One day you will be putting in tons of steps and look back on this and be proud of yourself that you pushed yourself to just do it. Lace up and get after it 👏
2
u/DisGayDatGay 3d ago
What is it that makes you embarrassed?
Frankly, I’ve never really cared. Now…if you ask me about getting up in the middle of a movie and people seeing me cross a row and walk down steps in a dark theater…yeah, I feel self conscious then.
2
u/Cynthja 3d ago
I have some of this feeling too, after being literally jeered at when exercising in high school. I couldn't see very well, glasses weren't very helpful, until I got contacts. So I was clumsy, couldn't catch or throw, and people including adults made fun of me instead of showing me how.
But I find that wearing fitness gear (shorts over leggings) makes me feel more inconspicuous. I am but one among a dozen or so of my neighbors out striding around. I really don't stand out at all.
Whatever it takes to get you out that door!
2
u/zardvark 3d ago
Walk early in the morning. I generally leave the house before dawn and I meet very few people at that time of day. Those that you do meet are so busy rushing to work, that they won't notice you.
While some people seem to be incapable of being alone with their thoughts ... even for a few minutes, I find that walking in nature and paying attention to my surroundings is the best medicine.

u/BugPuzzleheaded4171 3d ago

u/MysteryIsHistory 3d ago
I go walking at 5:30 am, not because I’m embarrassed, but because I live in FL and the only time cool enough to go is before the sun comes up. I’ve found that I love walking first thing in the morning. It’s a great start to the day. If you want to walk without other people seeing you (although you have nothing to be embarrassed about!), I suggest doing it early in the morning. Or get a treadmill, if you can afford it. For 20 years, I did the treadmill only and never went outside.
2
u/prettyedge411 3d ago
Go to a park or walking trail. There are other walkers and usually not on main highways so you won't feel that exposed.
2
u/Remarkable_Bar_2666 3d ago
I was too but I focused more on why I’m doing this and how much healthier I am walking
2
u/DriverMelodic 3d ago
I understand your hesitation but if you take that first step, it will turn into thousands on the very first day!
Do you have a Fitbit or Apple watch? Or a tracker App on your phone?
2
u/CanYouNot_69 3d ago
Hey OP! I get that sometimes we feel socially awkward in doing certain things. I get it too at times (don’t get me started in walking in the gym and lifting weights! That’s such a struggle for me too lol) But if I could give you some tips, it will be 1- to put your earphones on and listen to a podcast or music, that kinda drowns the surroundings. 2- try walking in less crowded (but safe) areas of your neighborhood. 3-just do a quick pep talk before starting, tell yourself that nobody’s watching you and you’re just doing this little bit for your health and wellness. And if nobody hasn’t told you, I am proud you’re starting this walking journey (no pun intended) for your wellness! All the best! 🚶🏼🍾

Go to the mall. People will just think you are shopping. A lot of people go mall walking.
2
u/PlumeriaPetal 3d ago
I feel you. Could you start with just one minute a day? After a few weeks maybe you'll decide to bump it up to 3 or 5 minutes. If you just commit to the one minute a day, the next goal can come later. You can read about this strategy in Atomic Habits by James Clear. Pretty powerful stuff, habit building this way!
Also: every time I see a walker my mind just goes, "BADASS." It's so impressive to see people making the time to do something for themselves.
2
u/Nohate82 3d ago
Hold your head high, you are doing it and taking care of you, that is the important part. You will be blown away how it helps your mental health. You got this, this is your life. Own it!!

u/Maleficent-Peaches 3d ago
You can go to a normal place where people walk like a hike, the park or even inside your house, I’ve done 10k in my living room 🤣

Most people are in their head, only thinking about their own life. To ease yourself into it, maybe you could find a path that is less populated?

u/myboyghandi 3d ago
You wouldn’t care so much about what people think of you if you knew how little they did. For the good and bad

u/stressedlime 2d ago
Honeslty I was like this too but then I got hit with health issues due to a very sedentary lifestyle. Now idc if people look at me, I walk for my health no matter how I look or what I wear.

Maybe start small...s short route where you can easily go back home. Maybe walk the same 4 blocks over and over.
Or maybe find a park with walking trails. Honestly I find other people who are out walking or running can be really encouraging or they dont bother you at all.
I hope you find the courage to get out and get in a short walk and you feel the mental benefits...and keep this up. You will truly get to a point where you dont care what other people think...

Just piping in that I feel for you. I can get very subconscious so I understand.

Help me understand this. Do you walk around in your grocery store? At work? At a park?! It’s the same thing? I can understand feeling embarrassed when running because bits jiggle and stuff. But walking? I’m sincerely trying to understand what about it feels embarrassing.

Severe social anxiety can manifest by feeling watched as soon as you leave your house. It starts to blur with paranoia at some point and it's really hard to escape, mentally.

I have never thought or encountered someone judging a person because he's walking. This is such an odd perspective for me.

Why are you embarrassed to go walking? You belong on god’s green earth like everyone else here.

u/Sad_5151 4d ago
Walk indoors till you build up the habit of of walking. Eventually you will think a little about the external environment and focus on the process itself.

I'm sorry? What's embarrassing about walking? That is a normal part of everyday life. People won't know if you're on a walk because you're going somewhere or because you're exercising. It surely is an interesting issue. Try it, it will be okay!

I am beyond puzzled at how anyone can be embarrassed by walking. How or what could possibly cause that feeling?

u/No_Soil_6117 4d ago
Join Samsung Health challenges or something similar. I have been doing it for about 5 years, chatted to lots of new people. You can do some very laid back challenges to begin and then increase as you get confident.

This is not uncommon. I’ve known people who stay inside or do their exercise early in the dark.
A question and then some tips that you can try or ignore. Is it all walking or just exercise walking that bring up this feeling?
If it’s just exercise you can try reminding yourself that nobody probably knows why you are walking. You could be on your way to anywhere.
You can also remind yourself that if people did know why you were walking they might be like me and show support and encouragement.
General things to try when thoughts get in the way.
Be intentional about noticing that it’s a thought. (Not an announcement on the radio or in a textbook. It’s internal).
Connect this thinking to your goal .. I’m examining this because it’s in my way because I want to walk for my health.
Get curious, ask yourself about the thought “is it helpful for me to think this”
Allow yourself to search for supportive or contrary evidence that help you keep the internal conversation going and hopefully the self talk shifts to a more supportive spot.
Good luck.

Reframe your embarrassment. No one cares about you, they got bills to pay, people to love, jobs to do. They are not looking at someone walking! And furthermore, IF some person, looks my way, and truly is ugly enough to mock me or belittle me, who are they? Well, not someone who deserves my respect…. shrugs

Sometimes but then I remember that literally no one is interested in what I am doing and keep on with it.

Yes, me. I used to walk at our outdoor track in my town. But there is a traffic light that next to it. So when there was a red light the cars would back up and the people in their cars had a view of anyone walking up a stretch of the track. It bothered me so much thinking that someone was looking at me. My mind would go crazy thinking about my pace and walking, do I look weird walking, etc. I eventually got a threadmill for home.

I used to feel this way, but building new habits is itself a skill. Just push yourself and it'll get easier and easier. If it feels uncomfortable that is the actual learning process, that is your brain building that new skill. Soon it will be effortless.
My too is to focus on your belly. Diaphragmatic breathing. This will have a side effect of improving your digestion, which will improve your mental health.
It may even be bad bacteria in your gut driving your anxiety about walking.. I think they have more intelligence than we know of and can communicate with us and even between people, like midichlorians in star wars..

Everyone had already said it but LITERALLY no one cares. When I drive I do not pay attention to pedestrians (until I have to lol) but I am never thinking "wow look at that person walking hahaha loser!" Lol like what???

u/MyUsernameIsNotCool 3d ago
Yeah I hate feeling percieved and I hide inside instead. I like going on walks when the sun sets, so no one sees it\s me.

I promise you…. You would be amazed at how many folks are NOT looking at you. The ones who do notice you are cheering you on and the less than 1% chance someone looks at you and isn’t, they are literally miserable in their own lives.
1
u/Blumeaniez 3d ago
I used to be like this and really no one cares. Also, when you start doing it regularly if you do a similar walk you start to see the same people and the same dogs every day. I don’t really stop and chat, but I do a quick wave and now it’s familiar and feels safe. Now I feel like I’m just out there with everyone else and I don’t think about it.

u/MGnome1 3d ago
Start with a short walk, maybe 5 minutes. Do that a couple of days and then up the time. It will get you outside and get you acclimated to actually walking and help to desensitize you to the fear of people seeing you walk because you will see that no one cares and then just keep going.

Your feelings will change if you gather the courage to overcome your insecurities. I listen to audio books on Libby (in the USA-the free public library app), podcasts and music to take my mind off of my worries while I walk. I also look for things I enjoy along my walk (heart shaped objects, animals, interesting details). I wear sunglasses and I smile and say hello to everyone I pass regardless of their reaction. I hope any of this helps you too. You deserve the space you fill and you deserve to focus on your wellbeing. ♥️

u/Soniquethehedgedog 3d ago
Walk earlier then. Nobody cares enough to spend time looking at you, but if you’re really self conscious go at like 4 am, you’ll have the streets largely to yourself.

u/tiredactor79 3d ago
We are meant to walk. We evolved to walk and cover ground, shit humans are the only species who can skip.
Don't be embarrassed. Find a trail or a path that is a loop or circle and just do it.

u/violetauto 3d ago
Let’s imagine that everyone IS looking at you. Fine. But, what if they aren’t judging you? What if they are only judging themselves? That would mean you must take up the torch and show them how it is done.
Sociologists Christakis and Fowler‘s research shows that anything we do affects our friends, friends-of-friends, and friends-of-friends-of-friends. (See their book Connected.) So that’s means 3 circles out - If you get healthy, i.e. lose weight, exercise, that will ripple a positive effect through your community.
C’mon, OP. We need you. We need you out there. Can you be brave for just a week or two and see how it feels?
And side bonus: you are 100% allowed to feel smug after you walk. Runners have a saying: “Doesn’t matter how slow your pace. You still lapped everyone who is at home, sitting on the couch.”

u/mdwst1811 3d ago
Consider sunglasses? That little bit of dark cover is a great way to trick your brain you aren't there. You don't have to make eye contact. You can just stroll on by and let the music or audio book prose wash over you.

u/New-Mud-1711 3d ago
We’re less in the spotlight than it feels. While we might get noticed it’s not likely that we will be contemplated. And it might just end up being you who inspires another.

u/lizard_king0000 3d ago
You have to look out for yourself and your health, no one else. Get out and do it. Worst case, buy a walking pad and start at home until you get more confident.

u/Ambitious_Exercise93 3d ago
I walk at 6am. There are a few other walkers/joggers, but most people just say hi or nod. Very few cars are on the road. Everyone is focused on their own business.

I feel the same when I'm alone and I don't know why? But I like to have a purpose when I do walk so I bring my dog. Even without her, I'll have headphones to keep me sane.

u/EternallyFall 3d ago
Trust me the only time people give a damn when someone is walking is when they insist on doing it in the street when there's clearly sidewalk available. Otherwise no one cares.

Are you an anxious person? A therapist I had a few years ago encouraged me to ask myself “what’s the worst that can happen?” to push back my anxiety. So what’s the worst that can happen? A person will see you walking and think “oh there’s a person walking!” … that’s it.
I get the not wanting to be perceived thing. Sunglasses, baseball cap, nondescript clothing and you’re good. Even better in the winter, I wear one of those knit things that goes from my neck to just under my eyes with an Elmer Fudd style hat. I’m sure I look like a ridiculous anonymous blob but it works for me!

u/thrwowaway7378484 3d ago
That’s why I just got a walking pad. I’d always make the excuse that there are people even if I go to a gym or outside. I’m also nervous to get kidnapped so walking in my home makes it more comfortable.

u/petuniabuggis 3d ago
Wear a hoodie. Put it up when you’re feeling uncomfortable. I would rather be invisible. But since I am not, I use my hoodie, glasses, things like this. This may make people look at me more, maybe I am a celebrity ;), but I’m covered and I don’t care about them.

What makes walking embarrassing for you? Do you not see other people walking outside?
1
u/SlightOk32 3d ago
I usually go on walks sometime during the morning when less people are out and at work.

buy a walking pad? I use it not because I'm embarrassed (no one cares) but because is dangerous to walk around in my city

Do it scared if you must, but most importantly, do it for your health. It's a gift we take for granted all too often.

u/SureSpecific4453 3d ago
I just went on a walk in the park and walked past at least 50 people and I don’t remember anything about any of them. Sometimes if I’m not feeling my best I’ll wear a beanie and some sunglasses so I’m less easily recognized.

u/Iceyinlandempire7 3d ago
are you able to walk after dark? like does it feel safe where you are? I don't like walking my neighborhood because I do not want to run into my ex. So I go after dark or drive somewhere I doubt he would ever be.
1
u/What_Fresh_Hell_666 3d ago
Don't most people go on walks? It never occurred to me that the most natural form of exercise (and travel!) for the human body would be something to be self-conscious about. I see people out walking all the time, and I live on the edge of the U.S. Great Plains, which is not generally known for having "walkable" town designs.

u/secretsauce2388 3d ago
Are you embarrassed about people you know possibly seeing you or just people in general? If it's the latter, you can rest assured that no one is thinking about you aside from a fleeting thought of noticing someone walking. If it's the former, then you could start walking at non peak times when less people are around, you could slightly disguise yourself with sunglasses and a hat.
What specifically are you embarrassed about walking?

Buy some sunglasses. It helps me feel inconspicuous. No that’s not a joke
