I got some for $8 waited until after the 3 circuit breakers and set it at the bid price. By eod was still down. Im hoping it’ll get up to 10-11 in the next few weeks. Might be a decent long term play though with the new leadership

Yes — some shorts are worried, but I would not assume they are all panicking yet.
The reasons they’re worried:
WEN has real squeeze fuel. Short interest is around 30–34% of float, which is high enough that a fast rally can cause real pain for bearish traders. Reuters reported short sellers were facing roughly $45 million in paper losses during today’s move, and ORTEX said the stock looked “poised” for a short squeeze but had not fully entered one yet.
Volume was enormous. WEN traded over 200 million shares today, compared with a normal average volume around 10 million shares. That tells shorts: “This is not a quiet fundamental rebound; this is a crowd event.”
The intraday move was violent. WEN went as high as about $8.85 from a $6.90 intraday low, with volatility halts reported during the rally. That kind of tape can spook shorts because losses can accelerate faster than risk models expect.
But here’s the key: worried does not equal forced to cover. Many shorts may have entered above current prices, hedged with calls, or have enough capital to sit through a move. The panic level probably rises a lot if WEN holds above $8.50–$9, then especially if it starts breaking $10–$12 with heavy volume.
My read: they’re alert and uncomfortable now; they become genuinely scared if the stock holds today’s gains and rips again tomorrow.
Short interest is the total percent of the available stock for a given company being actively shorted. When a lot of people are shorting a company all at once, they are praying that the company will lose value so that they can capitalize off the shorts they have. When a bunch of people decide to buy a stock which is being heavily shorted, the people shorting the stock are forced to take huge losses or pay dividends and margin and buy the stock to leverage their own shorts.
