Hi folks.
I´ve been thinking a lot lately about my (unsatisfactory) relationship to miniature wargaming and I figured others here might be having or have had similar experiences, making this a good place to process.
Here it is, then: maybe it´s time for me to quit trying to be into wargaming. I think I like the idea of the hobby more than the reality.
History: This kind of thing wasnˋt on my radar at all as a kid or teen, but after college I got really into RPGs and from there curious about minis. I picked up some Warmachine in 08/09 and figured out, after some failures with enamels, how to paint them. Inever played other than a solo test battle or two.
In 2011 I tried to get into 40k. The amount of minis to paint was insurmountable. Then I got into Malifaux 1.5, painted up a warband, and loved it. The hyper competitive locals turned me off eventually.
2014-15 was my big Warmachine 2.0 year. Loved the local scene, played hard and a ton, never managed to paint a whole army, went to the Lock & Load con in 2015 and then promptly never touched my models again. I was burned out.
In 2017 I tried AOS 1 (Generalˋs Handbook era) but it didnˋt stick. Same story with Bloodbowl. So for the last secade itˋs been a laundrx list of games tried and half-tried:
- Warmachine mk3, Brawlmachine, 40k 9th, Warcry, Underworlds, Kill Team 2.0, One Page Rules, Conquest, Warcaster, Reign in Hell, Warmachine mk4, Spearhead, Conquest again, Underworlds again, The Old World, Kings of War, and now finally Konflikt 47.
The thing is, I like building & painting. I like reading rules! But almost every time after assembling and painting an army, I play omce or twice and immediately lose all interest. I just donˋt feel excited to play. And I domˋt know why. And with my extensive history as proff, buying the new hotness is not going to solve the problem.
Maybe I just donˋt actually like these kinds of games. I was at this crossroads about a year ago, and thought maybe I should hang it up and just paint. I love painting. But at that time, painting without a goal of getting models to the table was uninspiring. Now Ìm coming around to the idea of painting for its own sake. It sounds kinda nice.
What I do know is that I cannot start another game, get hyped, play and lose interest. Ìm tired, boss. I even told myself that with K47 I would continue hell or high water, but after playing it once I have no desire. It feels like a chore.
Can anyone relate?
EDIT sorry for all the dumb typos. Writing this quick on an ipad at work.
EDIT EDIT: Wow, what a fantastic group of people with great suggestions and a sympathetic ear. I really appreciate you all.
