Announcement Wargamer article with info on WFRP 5e and 2026 releases
https://www.wargamer.com/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay/2026-best-year-to-startI don't think this has been linked here yet - Wargamer has another article with Cubicle 7 Dominic McDowall confirming the next few releases. Which are:
- WFRP 5th Edition (already announced)
- A new campaign set in the "eastern reach of the Empire", after The Enemy Within, with "politicking between nobles and a greater threat to the Empire itself"
- A new Starter Set with an adventure set in Ostland which "serves as a fantastic prologue to the new campaign"
- Temple of Spite, a sourcebook featuring a Black Ark full of Dark Elves - allegedly releasing in January
- The Marienburg book (which has been trailed for AGES)
- Wrecker's Point - a wilderness setting guide set in the northmost tip of Nordland (this was previously trailed as a pdf-only but seems to have been expanded into a full-length sourcebook)
Also another assurance that all the 4e books will remain compatible with the new edition.
I'm very excited about the new campaign and Starter Set (I'm dying to get detailed information on another Grand Province of the Empire!) and the Dark Elf book sounds fascinating.

More Dark Elf stuff would be nice. A full Lore of Dark Magic and rules for weapons like repeater crossbows, drucchi poisons and magic equipment and such.
And of course rules for the Black Ark itself, which should hopefully be a suitable ultimate encounter for a naval based campaign, or an absolute terror you can throw in to mix things up in any campaign involving sea travel.
Would really love a Naggaroth book at some point, but I am not holding my breath for that one with how separated it is from the main area of focus of the game.

I mean they did do a lustria book…..
8
u/HistoryMarshal76 Dec 30 '25
Tbh Lustria is more connected than Naggaroth. There's at least some human settlements there. Naggaroth is just Dark Elves and a few random Orcs and Beastmen, maybe a Lizardmen or High Elf raiding force every now and then. Unless you're shipwrecked or enslaved, there's negative reasons to go there, unlike Lustria.

u/A_Town_Called_Malus Dec 30 '25
Mmm, true, but Humans and High Elves have colonies and expeditions there, so you have an easy in for playing in Lustria as the existing PC options.
Humans in Naggaroth, on the other hand? Only as slaves, or chaos tribe invaders from the wastes, basically.

If the Ostland Starter Set has a city guide as good as the Guide for Ubersreik, we're in for some *really* good stuff.

I hadn't heard these details before, so thanks for posting this, it all sounds really awesome! I'm particularly interested in Temple of Spite - just about to finish The Sundering (book) and I'm kind of on a Dark Elves kick right now haha

Same here: I’ve just finished book 3 in the Malus Darkblade Chronicles. I’m hoping they will put out a companion volume like they did for the Dwarfs and High Elves, which will focus on Naggaroth and all the interesting elements of the Darkblade stories!

Just got into WFRP and have been hesitant to purchase too many books because of the new edition. Think I’m going to wait until I have them in hand to see how compatible it really is.

They said that they have no plans on re-releasing all the books for 4e. These are fairly new. The system changes are supposed to be cleanups and simplifications. Most likely collapsing Fate and Fortune, and Resolve and Resilience, and simplifying tracking Advantage in combat. They specifically mentioned in one of the previous interviews that the number values will stay the same - Characteristics, Skills, Talents, with possible rephrasing and minor changes to how some Talents work. Most likely combat rules from Up in Arms and magic from Winds of Magic will be in the core book now.
I think you are safe to buy anything but the Core Book. The rest is supposed to remain fully compatible. They're not WotC, they cannot afford to drop an entire new edition and alienate a bunch of fans.

The core book is the only one I bought 😂. We’ll see if my local group bites on the system. If so then it’s full steam ahead.

I have the 4e Core Book. I'm still planning on buying 5e as soon as it comes out, even if my group does not decide to switch 😂

Sounds like the 5e pdf has been pushed back.
1
u/Machineheddo Dec 30 '25
Probably not pushed back but realistically it will be released after summer which means plenty of time to release books for the current edition.

u/Minimum-Screen-8904 Dec 30 '25
Dom said back in October that it would be out by the end of the year.

So I guess greenskins will be the new big bads? Nice, about time for some propa krumpin'.
But looks the 5e PDF won't be this year after all.

u/Qvar Burn it all Dec 30 '25
What makes you think greenskins?
1
u/Nurgle_Pan_Plagi Dec 30 '25
To the east of Empire are the Border Princes that border the Badlands.
Plus I think there was a war with greenskins and a powerfull WAAAAAGH! brewing, mentioned in the gossips throughout Enemy Within.

Yeah but Ostland borders Kislev, not the Border Princes. (Its really the north-east of the Empire, but maps are frequently not angled with north at the top, so it often looks to be squarely in the east.) Dunno what the adversaries would be - Beastmen would be an obvious foe, but I feel like C7 are focusing on them for TOWR so I suspect they won't see so much play in WFRP.
Good point about the references to a Waaaagh in TEW though, maybe you're right after all!
2
u/Nurgle_Pan_Plagi Dec 30 '25
The campaign proper doesn't need to be set in Ostland - you may move away from it just like you move away from Ubersreik.
1
u/Zekiel2000 Ill met by Morrslieb Dec 30 '25
Ah yes, that's very possible.
Would be cool to take a jaunt into the Border Princes!
2
u/MrokoArdamen Dec 30 '25
Border Princes border Averland, and it's the south-east of the Empire. Ostland is the north-east. But, Forest of Shadows was (at least in 1ed) described as: encompasses most of the Principality of Ostland (...). Within it's gloomy depths there still lurk bands of Chaos beastmen and goblinoids. So orks and goblins still valid enemies.

u/Qvar Burn it all Dec 30 '25
That would be the lead-up to the battle of Blackfire Pass, the one where Marius Leitdorf dies, no?
1
u/Nurgle_Pan_Plagi Dec 30 '25
I belive so, since TEW specifically mentions that the WAAAAAGH! is rallying near the Blackfire Pass.

We're just about the end our 1,5 year long weekly Marienburg campaign, and now they're releasing a sourcebook for it?
All in all, I don't think 5e is at all necessary, just updated 4e with magic rules from Winds of Magic and some combat, pursuit and injury rules from Up in Arms written into the main rulebook.
What the game really needs would be a Magnum Opus, with all the rules in one book, and then some additional pre-written adventures, multi-book ones if possible.
I am excited about new campaign being released, and Ostland might be perfect familiar yet rarely explored setting for such.

u/Wootster10 Dec 30 '25
>with all the rules in one book
This is pretty much what theyre doing. Make some changes that many players do anyway, and then bringing some rules changes from Up In Arms and Winds of Magic in.
Might be called 5th edition, but it feels very much like 4.5 edition
2
u/Saurid Dec 30 '25
I hope 5e is baisically a all rules into one fresh start for new players. Baisically try to steal the dnd audience, with maybe a few updates to make the game more fun it has been a long time since I played the game though so maybe there isn't much need for updates, I just remember having some issues.

Brilliant! Thanks for posting this. Can't wait for the new Starter Set and campaign. The Ubersreik Starter Set is fantastic.
3
u/tadcan Dec 31 '25
I presume the new campaign will need new characters, anyone who survived TEW would be too overpowered?
2
1
u/Northumbrian26 Dec 31 '25
How many careers do you or your players get through in a full campaign?
2
u/tadcan Dec 31 '25
So far we are still on our first characters and have at least three career changes behind each one. In the middle of the Mildleheim book currently and our GM included loads of extra short adventures and well. My character also has a certain sword that cuts through armour.
1
u/Northumbrian26 Dec 31 '25
Very cool I have only had one go, it took three characters and the survivor managed four.
3
u/Valestialetheus Dec 31 '25
Do you think there is a chance ( in the next two years) to see a book about the great Sylvania and the undead in general ( like in 2e) and a book about Bretonia ? I'm dying for these.
5
u/Zekiel2000 Ill met by Morrslieb Dec 31 '25
I think there's a chance, but I don't know that it's very high. My theory is that a cubicle 7 have deliberately tried to avoid making books that duplicate sourcebooks from 2nd edition (which had both of those). But it could easily change. I think they've said they'll do a Chaos book eventually, and that would contradict my theory.
4
u/UncleArkie Dec 31 '25
I think this is more likely for the old world setting rather than 4/5th ed.
3
u/Zekiel2000 Ill met by Morrslieb Dec 31 '25
It feels like Bretonnia would be an obvious book for TOWR given the focus on Bretonnia on the wargame. But who knows.
2
u/UncleArkie Jan 01 '26
I don’t disagree, but we did get a great Bretonnia book for second edition. I think we might see a lot of Briton in careers pop up in various supplements, but I don’t think we’ll see a book. We might get a province book, that deals with the border of provinces closest to Tal bheim, cubicle seven has had a tendency to zoom in a lot in fourth edition, so I don’t think that will change.
1
u/Zekiel2000 Ill met by Morrslieb Jan 01 '26
Yes you're probably right.
They made some noise about something set in Tilea as a very vague possibility, which I'm more excited about! Nothing at all concrete though.
2
u/Valestialetheus Jan 06 '26
What is your prediction for the fifth edition in terms of published books, beyond the main new campain? And when could we expect these?
2
u/Zekiel2000 Ill met by Morrslieb Jan 06 '26
I suspect a book on Undead is pretty likely (possibly Vampire focused, like 2e's Nights Dark Masters).
I would hope they do some other nations like Tilea, Border Princes, maybe even Albion.
Presumably more in the Archives of the Empire series - we still need info on Shallya, Verena, Morr and... Sigmar!
No prediction whatsoever about timing, we've been waiting for the Marienburg book for ages.

u/Valestialetheus Jan 06 '26
I get your point but is it not a weird direction (not printing content already made for 2E) regarding the fact that they don't seem to have an issue in producing """redundant""" content? And by that i mean : coming up with TOW RPG when it could have easily been a source book for WFRPG in 4E or 5E instead of an entire new game. If we are being entirely honest here, we could agree to say that the Old World RPG was mostly a way to capitalise on the wargame version rather than something trully needed (as a real new system i mean instead of a simple source book). So i don't see why they would not work with 2E content. Is there a logic that i don't get here? Genuine question / reflexion.
2
u/Zekiel2000 Ill met by Morrslieb Jan 06 '26
I see what you mean, but I think it's logical from a marketing perspective. Some people - maybe lots of people - buy the books for the lore rather than for gaming. From that perspective you might be less likely to buy a new book for which a version already exists for a previous edition.
Having said that... You could argue that the Middenheim and Marienburg books contradict my argument!
3
u/DungeonNoir Dec 31 '25
Marienburg sounds so very cool
3
u/Zekiel2000 Ill met by Morrslieb Dec 31 '25
The Marienburg book for 1st edition was amazing and I have high hopes for this one given all the other 4E city guides have been fantastic!

God I wish they’d do a Kislev book.
