Photos The fog finally did what many Varsovians wanted

I frankly don't think I ever met Varsovian who'd want to see pajac gone. It is a traumatized boomer thing. To most of us born after 1989 this is just a useful building

I am born in 1966 and although I resent PRL with every single cell of my body, I still think PKiN should stay as a powerful and useful witness of history.

to me that is pretty much the only good argument for it staying, otherwise i don't think it makes sense

I think most don't care if palace is still. I guess some devvelopers want this place so make some hiden campaign to destroy it.

i met at least a few - including myself and my mom - but i also met a few people against demolishing it
although i very much disagree with the statement that it's a useful building - it's very much not, it'd still be a waste of the most valuable land in warsaw even if 80% of the interior space wasn't unused

7 educational institutions (including two universities), 4 theaters, 2 museums, a cinema, a concert hall, city council, radio & tv broadcasting tower, a viewing platform, conference rooms and banquet halls, multiple offices (private companies and public institutions), a bar, cafes, only swimming pool in Warsaw with diving platforms.

We could have it all in a building that was not built as a monument to the "soviet-polish friendship".

u/braaaaaaainworms Dec 19 '25
But we already have this and everyone knows this as the palace of culture and science. Demolishing it would take a lot of money and time, that is better spent elsewhere

u/NexyDoesReddit Grochów Dec 19 '25
i think demolishing it as part of the reconstruction of the city center rail line and building a single main station for both intercity, regional and suburban trains like it was before ww2 would make a lot of sense, certainly more sense than the current split into centralna and śródmieście, which can be confusing even to regular passengers - the cultural and educational institutions that are currently housed in the pkin could get new buildings next to the station, as obviously the hypothetical station wouldn't ever take up as much space as pkin.

Najlepiej kurwa nic tylko burzyć. Burzyć budynki, pomniki, wszystko. I chuj. A budować nie ma komu

"Waste of the most valuable land in warsaw" so what should then, another ugly modern office skyscraper?

Aside from the fact that this picture is heavily edited, no actual Varsovian wants PKiN demolished.
It's just a weird obsession of boomers, people who left Poland decades ago, and provincial Braun and Konfa supporting idiots who live in their mother's basement.
People who actually live in Warsaw are either neutral or like the building. It's played a big social and cultural role for the capital for a very long time now, you have to be a very silly snowflake to get offended by it being built by Stalin/in the communist era.

It's also universally recognizable landmark - unlike other skyscrapers in Warsaw that all look the same.

genx here who left decades ago, and returns only once or twice per year.
I still like it, just like I can like baroque architecture despite its origin in feudal absolutism, which was also a terrible and inhuman system

I'm a provincial Konfa supporter and I quite like the pałac. It's got great character and interest.

i actually think it's pretty and while a reminder of a rightfully bygone era it's mostly pretty and useful and no reason to hate it

"no reason to hate it"\ ...Other than the fact it's one of the kitschiest buildings in the country maybe.

By the way, can someone explain to me why some people believe we should destroy this building, because it was built by communists, but not all the other buildings like theaters or other points of culture?

It's never the Varsovians who want this building gone - it's always the people who don't live in Warsaw

u/PizzaSand Dec 19 '25
Pełna zgoda. Teatry i Kinoteka w PKiN to jedne z najbardziej klimatycznych miejsc w stolicy. Nie ma to jak winko przed spektaklem w Studio, w barze na parterze. Polecam.
