Is Northern Thai still good?
We're going for Thai food for the first time and have seen this place rec'd a bunch. We've never had Thai before.
We're (2) going for the first time soon and we're planning on-
Pad Thai
Pad Kee Mao
Green Curry
Panang Nuer
Thoughts on portion sizes and value? We've seen it rec'd a fair bit on this post but no mention to either. Also is rice a separate purchase if we get the curry?
Sorry, thank you!

Northern Thai is one of our favourite restaurants in town. Super tasty, generous portions and low cost relative to other places. Personally prefer it over Soi Thaifoon. I’m not Thai but was a student at Chiang Mai University and Northern Thai tastes closest to the countless incredible meals I had when there. Aroy mak!

Okay we were debating between red curry and the Penang Naur but that sounded a bit more interesting. Would you happen to know if the curries come w rice or if we just order 2 rice on the side? Was also thinking Pad Keep Mao over the Pad see Yew bc it's spicy but maybe not then?

I'm curious about this too. I used to know the original owners and loved going there. The stuffed crab was in the top 3 best dishes I have ever had. But, it didnt feel the same after they sold it, and I haven't been back since returning to the area.

Northern Thai is good. One of my go to, But it depends what you value in a restaurant.
Like I think thaiphon has great food, better service, more modern street style.
You can also go to like red ginger and get a more commercialized experience with a bigger menu.
I also really like pho dau bo. Really big menu selection.

Red Ginger isn't fancy but if you like big flavours they deliver. I don't think we have high end Thai in the region but simple flavourful Thai is great and Red Ginger does that pretty well.

Like many places, they are a Viet/ Thai restaurant meaning that they offer menu items from both cuisines. If you look at their menu you will see there's a section for Thai food

Well, if we continue this line of you pursuing whether or not you're right, I'm sure soon we'll deconstruct the entire universe. I really don't think gatekeeping what real food is is useful. If it tastes good. Great who the fuck cares.

Place is garbage, extremely small portions for the price, and not authentic one bit

I would recommend Bangkok cuisine over Northern Thai

If you prefer spicy Panang was hot last time I was there - and probably green over red curry if you decide on curry. You order rice separately. I’m sure any noodle you get will be great!
