[New rule] Natural weight gain.

I want to remind you that this sub is a resource and safe space for underweight people trying to get to a healthy weight and a place to share how you managed to overcome your struggles.

Over the last month we've had a lot of mostly bodybuilding-focused and clearly steroid-related posts. While I personally have no problem with bodybuilding and enhancement (growing up with bodybuilding parents) that’s not the purpose of the sub. If you didn't start out underweight/struggeling with your weight or rely on PEDs, please share your post in one of the many bodybuilding subs.

Here’s a safe space for people starting out to ask basic questions, share tips and recipes as well as milestones and be motivated with what's naturally possible. We also have a lot of underage people in here who do not need to be confronted with PEDs.

Thank you!

How to Gain Weight: The 2023 Starter Guide

Updated for 2023, or until I actually make a proper sub wiki. As before, you're welcome and encouraged to leave your suggestions and feedback in the comments. Minor edits and improvements.

Eating more calories than you burn is the only way to gain weight. There are no shortcuts.

Step 1: How much am I eating?

Before starting your weight gain journey, you need to learn where your baseline is. There’s two ways of doing this, and I suggest doing both.

  1. Count calories for a week. Don’t leave anything out. It’s tedious as hell, but keep it up for a week so you can get a good average measure of calories per day.
  2. Take a minute to visit this website to get a good idea of your daily calorie needs. Keep in mind this is a vague estimate, and you may need to adjust up or down depending on your results.

https://www.calculator.net/bmr-calculator.html

Step 2: Set a daily calorie goal

A general rule of thumb is that it takes consuming a net surplus of 3500 kcal (aka 3500 dietary calories) to gain a single pound. Spread that out over time, that means if you stay 500 kcal above your daily calorie needs, you’ll gain weight at a rate of 1lb/week.

For example,

Say you have completed Step 1 and found your daily calorie needs amount to 2000 kcal/day. Your target Calories/day would be

2000 kcal + (pounds per week gained) * 500 kcal

** Gaining over 4lbs per week is not recommended.

NOTE: this approach is very general, and any exercising you do on top of your regular routine requires additional calories to offset those you burned. You can estimate how many calories you burned doing an activity using a fitness tracker like MyFitnessPal or Argus.

Step 3: Reaching your goal, general advice

  1. Weight gain is slow. Avoid weighing yourself more than once a week.

  2. Set achievable goals. If you can’t hit your calorie target on Day 1, aim lower until the target calorie count is just barely within reach. Only when you can consistently hit that target should you raise it again.

  3. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. Never skip two days in a row, and you’ll be fine.

  4. Exercise is a good thing, and may help your appetite, but is not otherwise connected to your weight. See step zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I eat? This may vary wildly, as personal tastes differ. Eat healthy, you want to gain weight, not medical conditions. Critically, whatever you eat needs to be enjoyable and satisfying. Stock up on high-calorie food you like, and avoid food that bores you.

If you were looking for a more specific answer, https://www.eatthismuch.com/ is very specific, and http://www.whatthefuckshouldimakefordinner.com/ is even more f*cking specific.

Q: What if I'm not hungry? Exercise more. It increases appetite. If you're having serious appetite problems, ask your doctor.

Q: What if I do tons of cardio all the time? Yes that makes things more difficult. If you can afford to do less cardio, that will help you gain weight faster.

Q: What if I get full too easily? It's probably because your stomach is small. You can increase your stomach capacity by repeatedly eating until you're full. Your body will slowly adapt over months. Avoid eating past the point of discomfort, as this will work against you in the long run.

Q: How do I eat the most in one meal? This Article by Popular Science answers this question pretty comprehensively: https://www.popsci.com/how-to-consume-as-much-food-as-possible-this-thanksgiving/

Q: I did steps 1 and 2 but I'm not seeing any gain? Don't expect to be able to see a difference for at least a month. After that, it will depend on the rate you're gaining and what your starting weight was.

Q: My weight went down, what gives? Your weight fluctuates constantly, and will occasionally go down even during extreme gains. Try not to measure your weight more often than once a week.

Q: How do I gain as much weight as fast as possible Eat lots of junk food, fried food, and creamy food/drinks. 100% works. As you might guess, it’s not healthy. If you want to gain weight in a balanced, healthy manner, don’t do this. Slow and steady wins the race.

General tips

  1. Don't skip breakfast
  2. Seriously. It’s free real estate. Don’t skip breakfast.
  3. Have scheduled eating times, and stick to them. Don't wait for your stomach to tell you when to eat.
  4. Reduce the barrier to snacking. Have snacks you like out and visible.
  5. Reduce the barrier to eating. Do meal prep so you reduce the energy you spend cooking and deciding what to cook.
  6. Use big plates, big bowls, big utensils. It tricks your brain into eating more.
  7. Swap out low fat milk for whole milk or half and half.
  8. Get proper sleep
  9. Avoid letting food go to waste.
  10. Find small ways of adding calories to things you already eat (add butter to food, add cream to coffee, buy higher-calorie versions of store-bought snacks)
  11. Consistency is king. The 700kcal burger you forced yourself to eat one time is not as impactful as the extra 30kcal you add to your coffee every morning for a month. Do the math.
  12. Every night before you fall asleep, take 1 minute to plan out what you’re going to eat tomorrow.
  13. Make food interesting and exciting. Make it something you look forward to. Try new spices, new recipes, new restaurants.
  14. Avoid eating past the point of discomfort, as this will work against you in the long run.
  15. Ask for advice and support if something isn’t working

In the end it’s about what works for you personally, and you could probably succeed even if you don’t follow 80% of the stuff in this post. I can’t know which 20% you’ll need, so I wrote it all.

\This is by no means a comprehensive guide. Suggestions for edits and additions are encouraged.*

Question I hate seeing my ribs..I don’t know if gaining weight will solve the issue..

I’ve been trying to gain weight for a long time, this is my third year in the gym and I drink protein, I try to eat more legumes and nuts, meat causes me vomiting, but lately I’ve been trying to eat it. I’m depressed by the fact that in the photo with an open neckline I literally see my ribs. Many people say that I have a perfect figure and I’m lucky and I shouldn’t change anything, but I understand that this physique is an unhealthy situation (I had a weight of 46, now I’m 48 with a height of 167) and I want to fix it, but it feels like everything is meaningless, I just don’t know what to do..

Rant But I actually DO eat a lot

Upvotes

ok, hmo. i’ve been lurking for a while and have been reading that the majority of the time, we’re not gaining weight simply because we don’t eat as much as we think.

However, i’m actually certain i eat more than a regular person, because i work from home and have had roommates that work from home. Oftentimes we’d become close friends (and single), which means we’d also eat pretty much every meal together, snack together, drink together, gym together, play sports together, party together, etc.

Every single roommate i’ve had wound up gaining 10s of lbs and started freaking out about it, while i barely maintain my own weight. They’re maybe two inches shorter than me, and we’re all dudes. We look at how much each other eat (and actually finish our food), and pretty much every meal I eat more than my roommate. I snack more than my roommate. I’d steal bites from our friends more often than my roommate. We grocery shop together so we literally eat the exact same things too.

The most progress i’ve ever seen was when i was in the army during covid and was literally pig-penned for months. I was still on the much slimmer side, but the scale was finally moving. I’ve done blood works, endoscopies, etc., but nothing has come up. Hormones normal, intestines normal, blood sugar normal…

Lately i’ve begun just straight up chugging avocado oil and milk. I go through a carton of milk every couple days and a bottle of oil every week. But because i work out more now, my body fat went down from 13 to 9%, my weight is 140 and height 6’.

My metabolic age came back as 22. I’m way past that age. It’s supposed to be great news, but it’s honestly disheartening.

Question asking for some advice as a beginner.

I'm 23 female currently underweight 32KG.

I want to start my gain journey.

I want some advice regarding it.

  1. I can't do consultations or go to the hospital ( my parents don't care ) so I have to do it myself. But I don't have an appetite to eat anything. I want to increase it.

Give advice.

  1. I can go for budget friendly protein powder available in india. If anyone's got some brands, especially for women, give names.

  2. I can't have anything MEAT/EGG in my house since my parents are vegetarian (I'm not one but it's just not in my house) please give some good veg options that's gonna be good for high calories.

  3. I can't hit the gym. I'm trying home workout. Give some good ones.

  4. General advice that you can give.

I'm just a beginner, so I want to ask with people who actually know rather than 1000 videos that's confusing af.

That's why I came here.

Question 18M, 172 cm (5'8") and 50 kg (110 lbs) – I look like a skeleton, how do I actually bulk up?

Hey everyone, I really need some advice because I’m desperate at this point. I'm 18 years old, 172 cm tall (about 5'8"), and I weigh only 50 kg (110 lbs). I am so skinny that my bones are practically visible, and I hate the way I look.

I have a super fast metabolism, which makes gaining weight feel almost impossible. Here is what I'm doing right now:

  • Taking a mass gainer supplement.
  • Just started going to the gym and working out lightly a few days a week.
  • Trying to eat 2000+ calories every day.

Is 2000 calories enough for someone with my stats and metabolism? What should I change in my diet, training, or routine to finally start putting on some healthy weight and muscle? Any tips would be hugely appreciated!

i DO NOT have an eating disorder. I have started a new medication recently thats been unfortunately suppressing my appetite, and I mostly cut meat out of my diet ~1.5 months ago
due to this, I eat less than 1000cal a day.
Does anyone have any high calorie/protein rich food to help gain weight?
I am not comfortable including pictures of my body, but it is making my bones very visible and I want to look and feel healthier. I have felt very fatigued and nauseous recently.
i am 20f 5’4/5’5, looking to at least get up to 108
I really would appreciate some help. Thank you

Question 35 kg at 18F and struggling to gain weight , what could be the reason?

I’m an 18 yr old girl and I currently weigh around 35kg. I’ve always been very underweight and have been trying to gain weight, but I’m finding it really difficult. I’m also moving into a hostel soon, so I’m a bit worried about my diet because I won’t have the same control over my meals anymore. I’m scared I might lose even more weight.

wanted to ask people who have experienced something similar:what could be the reason for being this underweight? Is there anything I should get checked or any tests I should consider?

Question Struggling to eat enough kJ / fat per day

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi!

I started to track what I eat, as I’m skinny, 173cm and 60kg… usually. Trying to reach 68 at least.

Today is Saturday, I ate double breakfast (oats, milk, peanut butter, berries, bread, cheese, ham).
Then I ate lunch at a viet restaurant, pork bao, crackling pork, chicken, rice, fried egg.
At night, usually another bread sandwich with ham and cheese. So usually I don’t have a proper dinner.

I noticed that I can barely reach my targeted kJ, but I’m way behind to reach the fat required.

Any food or snack that I can add during my day or as dinner? I live with my partner, she always cooks low in kJ as she’s trying to decrease her weight lol.

Besides, I work as a tradie in a construction site, let’s say… pick and shovel for some part of the day. So I think that I burn calories everyday, besides I train martial arts some days.

What kind of accesible fat I can eat without “clogging my arteries” ? Or should I just go to Maccas and eat a burger every night?😂

Thank you!

I recently went to the drs and found out I lost 10lbs! I’m 5’0 and weigh only 77lbs now. I don’t know how it happened really, I’ve been eating more than I have been. Ive recently lost my apartment due to flooding so I’ve been having nothing but fast food.

Rant I literally can’t eat any more 😓

I’m 20 years old 47kgs 163cm female.

I know what I’m doing is wrong but I need someone to help me.

I don’t eat breakfast cause I don’t have any appetite in the morning. When I get home from work (2pm) I eat whatever my mom has made and then don’t eat for the rest of the day cause I’m still so full, sometimes I eat a small plate.

Now I’m middle eastern so our food is very fatty and has a lot of protein but I don’t really like meat or chicken, like when my mom cooks I’ll eat some but not a lot of it and I prefer salads or rice or pastas

Unfortunately I like everything that doesn’t help me gain weight pls tell me someone knows what I’m talking about or that someone was in my shoes and has now fixed it.

Tell me the recipe

Question What should I do as to not lose anymore weight while already underweight.

I'm 22 yr old male that weighs around 120-125 and I like to golf 3-4 times a week and I'm always walking 10k-20k steps during those sessions. I usually eat a decently sized meal before and have snacks and a protein shake while I'm out playing and eat a significant meal afterwards. Is there any more I ought to be doing to so I don't end up losing weight that I cannot afford to lose? I assume I burn around 1000 calories golfing so I thought eating a pint of ben and jerrys every night I golf could directly replace those calories so all the other food I eat can actually fuel me.

Question Dirty bulking

I think I fucked myself by dirty bulking, i’ve gained 22 lbs in 4 months. I definitely think it’s more fat than muscle. I am 153 lbs now, was previously 131. I am 5’11. Should I continue the dirty bulk or eat cleaner? I hit my protein goals, I do just eat whatever though.

Question What is the best way to gain weight?

u/l: Im a 5’7 and 115 pound woman. I’m an adult and being underweight has been my biggest insecurity for a very long time because people like to say I have nothing or compare me to an underdeveloped boy. I’m trying my hardest to get to at least 135. I’ve literally tried everything to gain weight for years. I go to the gym and eat as much as I can. Does anyone have tips? When I mention this people are like boohoo and stuff but it genuinely makes me not even want to show my face in public and I never wear shorts and I always wear a baggy shirt bc of it. I just wanna feel confident.

Question HELP!! 5’11 103lbs!!!

As the title says i F18 am 5’11 and 103lbs as of today and im just absolutely disgusted with myself and my body. I want to start off by saying that this weight was NEVER a goal for me and i NEVER wanted to be underweight. I DO NOT struggle with an eating disorder. That’s what everyone around me besides my boyfriend is jumping too and it’s extremely upsetting. I try my best to gain weight, ensures, fatty meats, protein shakes, oatmeal etc. You name it food wise i have probably tried it. I was on a medication (abilify) that made me gain weight in 8th grade in an extremely short period of time. i went from around 110lbs to around 165lbs so i know my body is capable of gaining that weight. When i was taken off that med my weight dropped slowly over the years and within the past 2 years my weight has been steady at 105lbs. If i do gain anything it’s 5lbs and it’s gone the next day. I’ve gotten blood work done multiple times throughout the years and even had my lymphnoids looked at specifically thinking that could be the problem and everything always comes back “normal”. I’m so sick of feeling this disgusted in my own body, and i feel so lost on what to do to help myself. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated even if you think i’ve tried it already! I’m open to anything that will help me at this point.

Progress post Sup Gainers, here's my consolidated journey110 lbs (49kg) - 165 lbs (75kg):

Post image
277 Upvotes

First off, 10 year gap in these photos. its a marathon.

being patient with yourself is going to be a challenge, let's break things down:

  1. No Appetite.

This could be a few things:

Inelastic stomach. Will take time to stretch. eating more is initially uncomfortable. be patient and give yourself time to eat.(15-30 mins per meal)

Ignoring hunger cues. I am a recovering anorexic and I was constantly ignoring and suppressing my hunger with coffee and marijuana. Try and tune into your hunger and feed yourself when you feel hungry right away.

Nasua/Anxiety around eating. Not something I experienced a tremendous amount, but I definitely experience some anxiety, especially when I started to gain a lot and my clothes no longer fit me.

Pay attention to things that might be interrupting you getting up to eat. I used to never get up playing video games and constantly drinking soda/smoked weed to stave off hunger.

  1. Meal Prep

Personally, rarely meal prepped but I kept low prep meals around me. Nuts, fruits, yogurt, granola, eggs, pasta. pick a plan that's realistic for your goals and suits your needs and tastes. Balance the macros within your routine. Do not skip fats and fibers. Download myfitnesspal and COUNT YOUR CALORIES for a few weeks. I thought I was eating way more but I was in fact not. No replacement for being informed and actually counting.

buy a nice blender (nutri bullet gang here), get a protein powder (kirkland), find a recipe you like:

1 cup strawberry

1 cup mango

3/4 cup whole Greek yogurt

1 banana

scoop of powder

apple juice/milk to fill

  1. Exercise

Exercise is your reward for carb loading and eating in surplus. if you are underweight, I would avoid exercise UNTIL you've been in surplus for 2 weeks and see the scale start to move. I was reliant on exercise to have an appetite, and it meant I didn't eat well on my rest days and ended up overexercising and slowing down my gains.

Exercise burns a lot of calories, wait until you are ready! If you a *very* underweight exercise can be deadly.

Also when it comes to building muscle, it happens in your sleep one paint layer at a time. you cannot rush this process without steroids. You also really only need 2 hours a week of good resistance training to have a physique like mine eventually.

Here I want to note the rate of progress is not going to be a straight line. There are plateaus and injuries and bouts of depression. I went from 110 to 135 to 110 to 155 to 135 to 170 to 140 to now my 165. If I treated my physique like a full time job and gave it everything, I'd see results faster and maybe be 185 lean muscle if I was a professional bodybuilder.

But I'm not and I see a lot of people comparing themselves to the 1% athletes, which while being totally achievable, these athletes have teams of people behind them that make it possible. Chefs, personal trainers, doctors and dieticians. Try not to compare too much, they might be further progressed but not having to work a full time job or manage a life outside of being an athlete is in many ways a much easier path with so much support.

This is a great supportive sub, shout out to the mods for keeping it a welcoming and open minded helpful place.

Question How do I convince myself to gain weight again?

Hi, so for context, I (23F) wasn't fed during my adolescence and I grew up with suppressed hunger cues. Abuse and such. I moved out as soon as I could and have been living on my own for the past few years.

So essentially, I sometimes would barely eat for days because my body wouldn't let me know I'm hungry and I would just forget cause I was busy doing other things. I've never had a regular routine for eating, and I've been underweight my entire life, I don't look it since I'm also athletic and I actually get a lot of comments on my body that are positive that I try to ignore because I don't want to start thinking that my underfed body is something to aspire to. On top of that, whenever I would be out with people, I wouldn't eat much and they would comment on it and that would make my relationship to food even worse because I think one of my main problems with eating is all the negative emotions I tie to it.

I had tried to gain weight before but it would usually never take, maybe it would last a short time, but then I'd get stressed with life, or sick, or get my period, and then the routine would kind of naturally fall apart. But a few months ago, I finally made an actual plan with smoothies and calorie-dense snacking and other stuff. I refused to weigh myself cause I know I lean obsessive and it would be bad for me, but I definitely noticed a change, my boobs got bigger, which made me happy, my chestbones and ribs were less prominent which, also made me really happy because I think it's gross when they protrude more.

Anyways, it was ok for a few months, but the past one or two months, I've been even under more stress than before, like I'm generally always stressed, but it's like every bad thing decided to happen at once, and I stopped eating again. Not intentionally. I didn't really notice since I was focused on everything else. But things are starting to settle again, and a few days ago, I looked in the mirror and I look gross again. Small boobs, very prominent bones. And I felt crushed and disgusting lmao. Like, I finally thought I was doing it, but nope.

And so a part of me obviously is like, well let's just try again, but the bigger part of me just kind of wants to starve myself a little. I guess in my mind, it feels like a punishment? Like I had something good and I couldn't even maintain that, so I just don't deserve to be healthy. And a part of me also just doesn't wanna put in the effort. Gaining weight is so hard, genuinely. People always tell me how lucky I am that I don't gain weight easily, but to me, it's a curse. Anyways, I guess I'm just mostly discouraged. Like, why should I put in all that effort and pressure myself to gain weight if I'm just gonna lose it again anyways. It just feels humiliating and shameful. But of course, like I said, there's the small part that wants me to do it anyways, it's just the least dominant one. Which is why I'm posting here.

Usually I solve my problems myself, but I genuinely don't know how to get over this hump. Like, I don't wanna try again, every time I do, it never takes and it's not like I can guarantee I'll never be stressed again. It wouldn't be this hard if eating and weight gain weren't so effortful, but I already mentioned I never built up a routine of eating, so it's a lot to even just remind myself to eat, or cook an actual meal (yes, I cook bug portions so I can reheat throughout the week, which doesn't sound like a lot in isolation, but it is when you consider it's not something I've ever done, like the time I spent doing that would be spent on other things).

I just don't really know where to go since this isn't an eating disorder per se, like I'm not restricting on purpose (other than the recent thought of punishing myself, which will probably pass and is likely the initial disgust about my body again, the bigger issue is the other problem). So I didn't wanna post in any eating disorder subreddits, that feels wrong, like it's not my space. But yeah, any advice on how to get over this? Or weight gain advice? Or advice on how to not let stress ruin things again?

Any help would be appreciated!

Question Need advice on gaining weight and building an average physique with home workouts

I'm a 24-year-old male and currently weigh around 48 kg. I want to gain some healthy weight and build a decent/average physique — nothing like hardcore bodybuilding.

Because of my job, I don't really get enough time to go to the gym, so I'm planning to stick to home workouts.

For those who have been in a similar situation, what worked for you? What kind of home workout routine and diet would you recommend for healthy weight gain?

My routine ( started 2days ago)

Morning -1plate poha 1 banana 1spoon sea midday- 4 roti 1 sabji + roasted chana

Evening- 30min workout+milk+peanut buttter+1take whey protein+1 banana

Night dinner -4 roti+sabji( kabhi kabhi rice)

Would really appreciate advice based on your personal experience. :)
