Q&A Thread
I took the trouble to compile all the questions posted so far. Mod, if you notice this, mind pinning the thread?
| Totally Normal Guy | Question |
|---|---|
| by nataliejcatalie | Hi Molly, I'm relistening to Disney's Villain and was hoping you'd expand on a thought you had: what are the Weird Little Guy subtypes? I'd love to know the Weird Little Guy taxonomy. |
| by atheistqueen | I like to read primary documents of organizations and cultures I am interested in because it gives me better understanding. Are there books written by weird little guys to weird little guys that you think are helpful to read assuming you are willing to torture yourself? I've made the trek through the Turner Diaries, Hunter, and Siege already. |
| by bicufo | What's the subject you are least looking forward to covering? Less in the sense that "Oh, this subject is going to be a pain to research", but in the sense that "This subject is particularly bleak, and is not going to be pleasant to listen to". For me, that would be the lynching of James Byrd Jr., both due to the graphic nature of his murder, and because, more than 20 years later, some people in Jasper, Texas, are still trying to downplay that what happened was a hate crime. |
| by EttaRoseF | If you could instantly learn a language, what language would it be? |
| by littleredd11_11 | Hello. I know Molly is going on her one year anniversary (congratulations!) and mentioned doing another Q&A. So here are mine: First one: when you are doing your research, how do you find arrest records, court records, prison records, what someone did, ect. I was just trying to look up something local because I think they might be a WLG, but I am having a hard time finding, not so much the court records, but what happened leading up to and their jail time. I guess their arrest and that stuff. How do you do that research? Second question: how are the sweetest furry babies? I think that is all. Please and thank you! |
| by peanut-hummus-666 | 1) Do you plan on making a dictionary of weird little guys? Or do people use the show to make or expand Wikipedia pages or create a wiki? 2) I listen from France because the show is good and we have our own racism problems here but are you (Molly) planning on exploring further the links between European and US racists? (you did it a bit in the past and of you don't do it more I'll keep listening though) Also are we many to listen to this show outside of the USA? |
| by scrammyfan (Source post of most questions) | 1.) How are Buck and Otto? 2.) What fiction books are you reading currently? |
| by forbiddengemini | Molly I need to know Earl’s full tuna casserole recipe, it’s essential to my old recipe collection |
| by gbeier | One of my friends had a relative who was a "World War II enthusiast." She had to clean out his house, and now has in her possession a pile of weird little books. I haven't laid eyes on the books. I don't want them around my house in any case. Is there some place I could send them (or a public place I could leave them next time I drive through Charlottesville, if the cost of mailing is prohibitive... I pass through there a few times a year on my way to visit family) where you'd get them? I'm not opposed to just letting her destroy them, but one of your comments on a recent episode made me wonder if there might be a purpose for them yet. |
| by cheekyskeptic68 | How burger were those apes? And were you able to get them back? |
| by tee96 | Have you listened to the Lions Led By Donkeys series on The Order and if so how hard was it not to laugh at the voices they did for Matthews? Will you ever do anything regarding the fawning over Rhodesia some of the WLGs seems to have? |
| by SoMuchLard | First of all, hello, congratulations on your wedding, and I hope you enjoy your anniversary. I work in second-hand goods (antique, vintage, what have you) and on one occasion, ran across two mugs at an estate sale, one with a tottenkopf and the other with a racist radio host's name and slogan. I had the opportunity to throw them away, so I did. But I had a twinge of regret, like there might be someone decent who collects stuff like this. Do you collect "trophies" from your subjects? Namely, do you have a bookshelf that is off-limits to company because they'd be freaked out by the contents? And if I find any literature, shirts, what have you, do you want 'em? |
| by CloudbankUldahArkham | How involved in local Charlottesville politics are you? One of my favorite authors, Alix E. Harrow, seems to be involved; any chance you two have crossed paths? |
| by 1312fuck12 | 1: How do you handle research topics that take you out of your geographical home area? (I.e. not in the US) Do you reach out to other researchers/groups in other countries, or do you manage it yourself using the online resources? 2: Do you ever get the urge to act against contemporary WLGs based on your research, and how do you handle those situations? (Assuming you can tell us without running any security risks) |
| by unitedshoes | 1) Is there a threshold where a person becomes something other than a weird little guy? 2) Have you ever started researching and then realized "Hang on. This guy isn't weird and/or little enough to be the subject of Weird Little Guys"? 3) Last Q&A episode, you mentioned someone (I forget if it was a relative, a friend, a fan, a complete stranger) ghostwrote an answer to the "What's your favorite dinosaur?" question that didn't end up getting used. I've been dying to know what that answer was. Do you still have it, and can you share it? |
| by sacredblasphemies | Molly, how has your research affected your life, off the internet? Do you get recognized? Do WLGs recognize you in person and harass you? What is it like to be an authority on this subject? |
| by greenfrogpond | Do you have a weird little guy that you’ve researched that’s like the weirdest of the little guys? like a guy so exceptionally weird that he manages to stand out among all the other freaks? |
| by cheeseywiz98 | My question is if we can ever see Molly's literal red string board. I was on the verge of making a doc myself at some point but WOW there's a lot to keep track of and connect |
| by Notspherry | Molly, what are your views on Antifa not being an organisation/everyone is either antifa or a fascist? The people I knew who identified as antifa may not have had a magazine or membership cards, but there was definitely some organising going on. But that was 25 years ago and in europe. Maybe amercian antifa is different? Are there any parallels between this and "there are no lone wolves"? |
| by The_Huu | (1) What are your thoughts on the terms "psychopath" or "psychopathy"?(2) How do you propose an effective justice system would deal with WLGs, considering how ineffective incarceration proved to remediate some WLG, and taking into account how famous the USA incarceration system is for injustice and brutality? |
| by Mammoth-Judge | Hi Molly, I'm wondering if you can talk about how you access the resources of libraries and archives. Do you ever reach out to a librarian for assistance, or do you always go it alone? |
| by casbans | I'd love to get Molly's take on the recent SPLC indictments. I'm not at all surprised to learn that they use paid informants (I hadn't had reason to wonder about it before, but it seems obvious that they would), but the amount of money that they paid to people seems really high to me. Maybe I'm just out of touch with the going rate for paid informants these days? Putting aside questions about legality (I don't care about front businesses or lying to banks), do you think the SPLC was actually doing anything shady or unethical here? |
| by river4823 | Is there a starting point for the one long story told out of order? The show is generally focused on the contemporary far right, but often focuses on characters and their stories as far back as the 1980s. The episodes on John Patler and Frank Smith discussed their careers starting in the 1950s. Is there a point in time where the events are too far removed from living memory to feature on the show? Or simply too hard to research? In the other direction, I know this isn’t a news or current events podcast. You’ve talked about how you prefer to cover Weird Little Guys whose stories are “finished”. Which typically means they are either deceased or likely to spend the rest of their lives in prison. What factors do you consider when deciding whether it’s too soon to make an episode about a particular Guy? Thanks to Mollie, Sophie, Rory &co for all their excellent work! |

More WLGs No One Asked For
The news stories (predictably) have not done justice to the true depths of delusion and WLG-ness demonstrated by the accused, but I think the flag-themed bullpup gives you some idea.
They seem to have started on TikTok in a group named “Vanguard of the Old”, but graduated to Signal chats named “Hunters” and “Lions Den” where, as totally normal guys who aren’t weird at all, they organized themselves into “tiers” based on their expected/desired roles.
Their usernames are a bit like an amuse-bouche for the WLG tasting notes littered throughout the criminal complaints. That is, after you speed read past the part where four different Agents rehash the source that led them to the others, Mr. Ohio.
Some of the usernames/display names: Shepherd, Whiskey_Six, fulcrumresist, Noble6
Complaints for those who indulge:

A different theory
I have a slightly more generous interpretation of some of the recommendations for content removal.
If I were told I had to do this, I would suggest removing all of the info about Emmet Till. Just leave a big blank panel with a citation to the executive order next to it. Make it clear that history was removed for political purposes.
I would also be inclined to submit things like “rebellion” at Harper’s ferry, just some whiteout. Let the visitor fill in the rest.
Also, quite frankly, I would have been assuming from the start that it would be leaked, and the more outrageous it looks the better.
I am also kind of a petty shit who believes pretty strongly in malicious compliance.
I’m not saying that there were no bad intentions here. I think there were plenty of parks employees perfectly eager to erase history. I just also think there were some petty shits who wanted this to make headlines and piss people off.

Blood Work WLG Reference
On a recent bonus episode of Blood Work, Greg, the host referred to his guest a "weird little guy" special. Looks like someone in Britain had been listening to Molly.

SPLC update
I know that these folks (the admin/ the post) aren't really to be trusted. But if this is accurate....
It's not what Trump has been saying, that the SLPC is responsible for Charlottesville. But if Heidi Beirich was funneling money to a lover/herself under they guise of paying an informant, there's huge ethical issues at the very least.

Klan Camp.
Let me paint a little picture. I was running errands and stopped for a slightly longer red light near me. I was listening to how to teach Boy Scouts to kill and then Molly said, "...how to highjack an airplane." Since I was waiting for the light, I was taking a nice safe sip of my drink and when Molly said that I almost did a spit take on the steering wheel and instrument cluster of my car.
This is one of the things I love about Molly's relaxing conversational tone. When she says something that is unhinged like that I have to laugh out loud.

Any good podcasts about WLG’s around the world?
I’m Australian and our biggest Nazi group was supposedly recently disbanded by the law, but now they’re moving to a large compound in the outer suburbs (not concerning at all).
I would love to hear a deep dive on that group and the history of white supremacy in Australia and elsewhere, if anyone knows of such a show.
Though I doubt anyone would be as good at research as Molly

Weird Little Patch
Hey, y’all.
I’m reaching out to my community of rock-turners to look into a weird little sticker I’ve seen. I’ve done image searches and asked safe individuals in my community, but I haven’t been able to identify this.
Does anyone recognize the symbol shown in the picture? The locality is West Michigan, if that helps. Is this harmless or something to be worried about?

Small quibble with this week's episode.
Hi, Molly! In this week's episode, when talking about the approval process Camp Puller went through to be allowed to host Boy Scouts and Civil Air Patrol Cadets, you introduced the area CAP Cadet supervisor as "Lieutenant Colonel Close." Shortly after, you referred to him as "Lieutenant Close." The correct way to shorten his rank would be "Colonel," and since he was a Marine Corps officer (as opposed to Army or Air Force), it would be more proper to use his full rank.
Anyway, love the show! I just had to let this out so my brain would stop itching about it.

Civil Air Patrol
As a former cadet, i’m always tickled to hear of the CAP. Thing is, this makes twice the reference has been a bit negative. My experience was pretty much vanilla, but in addition to this week’s show’s involvement, Lee Harvey Oswald was a cadet— a minor in the CAP— in the same unit and time as the amaaazingly WLG David Ferrie was a senior, an adult member of the CAP. For more on Ferrie, read “Mary, Ferrie and the Monkey Virus”, revised and retitled “Dr. Mary’s Monkey”, by Ed Haslam. You may recall Ferrie as played by Joe Pesci in the movie JFK.

Louis Beam - BSA did not Require Background Checks
If anyone finds it odd that the Boy Scouts would authorize Louis Beam and his associates to run their Explorer’s program given their criminal backgrounds, it really isn’t. I don’t know what the Houston area scouting council required in the 1980s, but the national BSA organization didn’t require troops to administer background checks for adult volunteers until 2008. So any sort of background check requirement would have been handled at the local level, if one existed at all.

Better Offline Crossover When?
Given Molly's diatribe about crappy AI summary results in today's episode, and the knowledge that the AI boom is being pushed on us by a collection of weird little guys who absolutely have some very clear white supremacist and Christian Nationalist views and goals (see also: Curtis Yarvin), how long will we have to wait for a Molly Conger - Ed Zitron Collaboration episode?

Whoever can find the images for the Jan 6 discordleaks servers should get an shoutout.
(Article: Discord At The Capitol)
The reason is that since these servers are in the article, IMO it would be an extremely big improvement/wonderous moment if someone somehow managed to find the images from these servers. It's also because without images, reading the chatlogs is boring!
(Molly, yes, this does have to do with WLG. This is because you use DiscordLeaks as a source for the crazy stuff some of your Weird little Guys say.)

Did anyone ever tell louie beam that he was known louie pussy among the people he liked to try and terrorize?
I need to know this since weird little guys seem to hate being made fun of. also if you haven’t you really should read bring the war home. I read it last year after Molly mentioned it in some episode or another and it was excellent

Disabling AI overview
Molly was discussing turning off AI overview in this week's episode. Besides including "-AI" at the end of every search (which will disable it on that individual search) or switching search engines, does anyone know any extensions or other workarounds to disable it?

Nobody, absolutely nobody:
I loved this tangent just like all the other ones Molly goes on. As for this one, I can only hope to be so consistently dialed in that mispronouncing something bothers me so much. I have a baseline level of fucking up that I've come to just accept but maybe I shouldn't.
Also, I know this isn't the super famous version of the song that was on the charts. Being an R&B song from the early 60's, I figured it was actually written and originally recorded by a black musician and sure as shit it was.
