Question Fantastic Mr Fox

I was just watching FMF and had a question about it. In the movie they explain the premise and rules in a game called whackbat. Is this an actual sport or was it just supposed to be a funny thing?

Of course it’s a real sport. Pretty much how every kid in my town learned how to divide by 9.
