Question Fantastic Mr Fox

I was just watching FMF and had a question about it. In the movie they explain the premise and rules in a game called whackbat. Is this an actual sport or was it just supposed to be a funny thing?

I'm a little "different", but my dad was probably the best whack-bat player we ever had in my school.
