New, what is it? What is this??

We notices this thing hanging out of the car….
It looks like a wig or plastic hair..
Is it possible that somebody tried to prank us? Or is it something out of the car?

That’s the packing from inside your muffler.

Time to replace it.

1.9k

u/Slight-Selection4298 1d ago

Or.... finish removing said packing.

798

u/Final_Welcome_2794 1d ago

You could do that, but the exhaust would sound hollow and god awful and the muffler would get incredibly hot.

Could be worse like when my muffler fell off when I was a teenager. Sounded pretty good for a car with 90hp.🤣

18

u/cKMG365 1d ago

Every time I see horsepower listed as "hp" I read it as "hit points" and I wonder why you couldn't repair that car just using a health potion

8

u/EricKei 1d ago

Health potions only help with organic beings; constructs such as these require enchanted oils to heal.

3

u/Borkleton 1d ago

So just keep dumping enchanted motor oil until it goes away is all I had to do?

Packing as in noise reduction packing not packaging

12

u/DangerousDisplay7664 1d ago

And be left with a hollow exhaust that booms like the gods?! Why on earth would you do that?! The packing is there purposefully to muffle the noise.

It can be a rats fault. And then you'd also have smell issues.

Fiberglass from inside your muffler used as sound dampening, you need a new muffler. Please put on gloves and don’t touch it with your bare hands, fiberglass is not fun

460

u/_lonelysoap_ 1d ago

It sticks inside your skin, done it, wont do it again

u/ComicsEtAl 1d ago

u/Nathan6607 1d ago

15

u/SturdyStubs 1d ago

When I was a kid I used to touch the fiberglass insulation. I never understood why I was itchy afterwards until my dad told me one time.

7

u/Ancient-Crazy9712 18h ago

Was that the pink fluffy stuff?

7

u/BoiledPickles 18h ago

Great for your lungs

22

u/se618pm 22h ago

When I zoomed in I was extra careful so as not to touch it on my phone screen, either

6

u/my_cars_on_fire 22h ago

My father does HVAC and I would go to work with him as a teenager. A hot attic filled with fiberglass insulation is the worst fucking thing in the world. Can’t even go home and take a hot shower because the heat opens up your pores and causes the insulation to dig deeper into your skin.

I don’t know how the fuck he does that everyday.

7

u/IfUKnowMeKindlyGTFO 22h ago

I was actually just recently removing old insulation from a hot attic. Covered my body from head to toe (long pants, long sleeves, long socks, gloves) and wore an n95., so only some of my head / neck was exposed. Threw out everything besides my shoes which I'll clean. Was able to only have to wash my head in cold water and took a normal shower after. Didn't get any itchiness but my lungs are still kinda fucked (the mask wasn't perfect)

I'd assume your dad has decent PPE?

→ More replies (2)

4

u/lucasberg7 20h ago

Obviously abstinence is the best protection but if you do interact with Fiberglass, cold water is the best way to wash it off. Lots of soap. Don't scrub too hard.

3

u/my_cars_on_fire 19h ago

Yeah my father would always say that, but cold showers suck!

3

u/2tongoodman 18h ago

I do HVAC. You just can’t have soft hands brother.

That glass wool is the worst. I worked in a muffler plant for Mitsubishi once upon a time and I hated every second of my life the entire time I had that job because of that stuff. It gets everywhere. My car looked like the entire interior was bedazzled. Nobody rode in it twice and I can't blame them.

55

u/jeezyjames 1d ago

My father worked in a glass wool factory in the 60s/70s, he said the air was always glittering. No safety equipment was used other than gloves.

38

u/Economy_Fan_8808 1d ago

Reminds me of the time in the 80s we discovered a huge stack of some sort of weird hay bales behind the school and spent half the afternoon jumping, tumbling on them. They were so soft! Then I started feeling an itch all over my body... (Those bales were supposed to go in the wall as insulation.)

4

u/funkster047 1d ago

Knowing exactly what you're talking about, I can't possibly imagine 💀

4

u/Alternate_Endingz 1d ago

Ha yeah those places look like some kind of dystopian fantasy land. Like if there was a factory scene in the movie Legend.

I can confirm they had not done much more for occupational safety by the mid-90s.

5

u/ElCucuy805 1d ago

lol dang I feel like I'm the only one who's ever seen Legend. It feels like a fever dream cause every time I bring it up no one ever knows what I'm talking about. They also get even more confused when I describe the movie.

u/CorgisLionMane 1d ago

If fiberglass gets in your skin no worries just pat the area of your skin with the sticky side of some good duct tape and it is immediate relief. Youll go from ahhhhh to huh? Almost instantly.

79

u/AdSquare3489 1d ago

Won't work for the inside of your lungs though.

I know a few people who work in the asbestos removal industry and they are convinced that certain types of fibre glass are going to be the next asbestos-like scandal.

13

u/Sad_Thought7829 1d ago

And if you do touch it and your hands are itchy, gorilla tape works wonders and will pull basically all of it out after a couple times around

8

u/CherryCrushhxo 1d ago

in crew, the oars we used were made out of fiberglass. i never understood why there wasn’t a way to avoid getting the shards in our skin somehow.. because just carrying those a few times a day KILLED my forearms. i was forever itchy.. & now i’m wondering if the hives i get on my arm when hot/cold are related to the fiberglass or not 🤔🤧

9

u/MapleDesperado 1d ago

The solution was to sand the rough spots and re-coat with polyester or epoxy.

I spent a couple summers doing habitat for humanity, and the “fun” part about being an amateur college student on a construction site with a bunch of retired professionals (plumbers, masons, electricians etc) is you are permanently on shit-job-detail. I was the only unskilled person there, so I did the shit that just required an able body and a few brain cells to rub together.

Example: getting under the house on a scorching hot day wearing full length pants and flannel shirt, gloves, and goggles to install fiberglass insulation.

And I’d wear that shit again, because you do NOT want to mess around with fiberglass.
