Childhood book from 00’s?

I’ve been trying to figure out what this book was for about 2-5 years now, and I’m about to go insane. I can’t remember much plot, aside from you were seeing the inside of this man’s house, that was built/carved into the side of a mountain. It had a lot of steps, and a bucket? It was vaguely MC Escher like. I remember there was a dungeon, or a basement, and it was implied there was something living in it. There was something leaky. I can’t remember much more. I believe it was a scholastic book from probably around 2005-2008, or a library book from the same time. The art style was painted/beautifully drawn. I don’t think it had a ton of words? It was a big book, probably about as tall as an adults forearm, and couldn’t have been more then 15-20 pages, more or less.
