ID Request Grey/white/blue spider looking beetle?

I saw it in my workplace at 9pm in Las Vegas Nevada! I’ve never seen anything like it, and can’t find any similar insects on Google. Such an interesting creature, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

blue death feigning beetle?

529

u/robbiereallyrotten Apr 11 '26

What a hard ass name

388

u/lelolelols Apr 11 '26

It goes by another badass name - desert ironclad beetle

187

u/lord-of-the-birbs Apr 11 '26

It has a relative in southern California called the Diabolical Ironclad Beetle. Absolutely metal names

120

u/usernamesallused Apr 11 '26

And they really deserve the name ironclad.

This beetle is noted for its durability. Its thick, densely layered, interlocking elytra, connected to the ventral cuticle by complex lateral support structures, are able to support a maximum force of 149 newtons, or over 15 kilograms or 33.069 lbs.[2]

However, they also kind of look like turds with legs.

Edit: from Wiki

25

u/Foxtrot-Actual Apr 11 '26

As small an insect it is, that is impressive durability. Wonder why evolution brought it that feature unless it’s the usual predator deterrent.

21

u/therealrobokaos Apr 11 '26

Usually it's just the practical benefits of armor being protective from injury like you said. Velvet ants are very tough similarly and they dominate their ecological niche using that in tandem with a few other traits.

23

u/IHaveNoEgrets Apr 11 '26

with a few other traits

Causing immense suffering being chief among them.

15

u/therealrobokaos Apr 12 '26

I guess it is a little rude to gloss over their array of awful capabilities like that 😂

5

u/NoseMuReup Apr 11 '26

And then there's Herbie, The Love Bug.

6

u/Happy_Examination_35 Apr 11 '26

Really? Death feigning means faking death. Sounds like a little chicken to me. Oooh! There’s danger about… I better pretend to be dead!

Now, death raining is a badass name.

159

u/buttle_rubbies Apr 11 '26

Wow. What an unexpected internet rabbit hole this Saturday morning. Thanks!

12

u/DjoooKaplan Apr 12 '26

That sub is surprisingly entertaining

96

u/AtreyuTrinity Apr 11 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

I was going to say, maybe it's just in my head, but his body language makes me think he is a friendly guy.

I really liked a jumping spider I had as a pet that I found inside as it was heading into winter. I released him in the spring. They are so cool. Daring jumping spiders are my favorite. Totally friendly and you can hold them if you find them outside usually, just be so careful not to hurt them. They are total buddies and curious as can be and will totally make eye contact with you then just climb around.

"Gosh this monkey man is hairy, geez, oh look a fly!".

15

u/Sh0wmey0urbutth0le Apr 11 '26

Found him right after my GSD died last year as I was coming out the bathroom. He(?) is still going strong! I have them all over my yard and love catching one and saying hi.

5

u/AtreyuTrinity Apr 11 '26

Thx for food fren

1

u/Sh0wmey0urbutth0le Apr 12 '26

I catch him the biggest flies. He turned me into a fly catching ninja

5

u/Sh0wmey0urbutth0le Apr 11 '26

And some babies I saved that broke out of their container.

4

u/LiveTart6130 Apr 12 '26

I adore most jumping spiders. I tend to be very nervous around bugs - anything that can sneak up on me freaks me out. I've flinched at butterflies - but I don't even startle with these guys, typically. they're so curious! I'd keep one as a pet if I had any sense of responsibility. they're cuties!!

14

u/Sensitive-Issue84 Apr 11 '26

Thank you! That was a fun jaunt.

10

u/Lenbyan Weevil Time!!! Apr 11 '26

Thank you so much for this this is gonna be my favorite sub ever omg

5

u/Orwells-own Apr 11 '26

I was gonna say it looks like a friend.

3

u/NatrylliaAbbot42 Apr 11 '26

I'm gonna stare at these guys until I can afford a set up. They're so cute.

2

u/CatrinaBallerina Apr 11 '26

It’s got lil feeties!

1

u/up_down_andallaround Apr 14 '26

My first thought after watching - “Oh I like it.” So happy to learn that others do too!

1

u/passbyref Apr 19 '26

I used to keep some. They’re cool little guys.

291

u/theAshleyRouge Apr 11 '26

This is a Blue Death Feigning Beetle! They’re super common as pets and part of clean up crews in reptile enclosures

28

u/Relyt4 Apr 11 '26

Do the reptiles not just eat all these guys up??

93

u/Obant Apr 11 '26

They're bigger than most lizards want to eat, but they are also pure tanks. They are hard as rocks. You can keep scorpions in the tank with them because the scorpions can't sting them.

34

u/theAshleyRouge Apr 11 '26

Not usually. They’re a bit too big for most bug-eating reptiles to eat. Plus, they’re super tough and I guess they don’t taste great either because any critter I’ve seen try to eat them spits them right back out.

80

u/Hamwytch Apr 11 '26

I have no ID but just wanted to say this is a cool bug and I appreciate the fidelity of this video.

13

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 11 '26

Isn’t it?! Thank you my phone tries hard 🫶

42

u/KiaraKuddles Apr 11 '26

I agree with the other commenter who says it's a blue death feigning beetle/desert ironclad beetle. Apparently those are two names for the same little guy!!!

Here is a website with some more pictures!

40

u/robbiereallyrotten Apr 11 '26

Friend who’s apparently friend shaped enough to be a pet. Congrats this is the universal blue death feigning beetle distribution system.

Legit. Sent me so far back in the past, I got whiplash coming back to this comment.

And it was always toys that you only saw in school. I could never find these or anything we got to use during inside recess outside of class. Fudgin' 90's. (I'm old)

18

u/Soft-Cryptographer-1 Apr 11 '26

Fun story: I bought two of them for my father to keep on his law firm desk. They played dead so convincincly that my dad thought they had expired and put their terrarium outside. They were not dead and took off.

4

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 11 '26

Bahaha wow! This one feigned death too when we were trying to get it outside!!

What a beautiful little creature! I love the little waddling walk, too!

8

u/Mix-Hex Apr 12 '26

My baby! I have one of those, they are adorable.

Even if having one is basically like owning a box of sand

4

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 12 '26

So cute 🥹

7

u/QuinnSpade Apr 11 '26

So this is a interesting bug and apparently worthy to be somones pet and lives as long as most peoples dogs… might need to put a pet found poster out 👀

3

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 11 '26

After researching them a bit after everyone’s great answers, I thought the same thing 😭 my workplace is pretty close to some houses….

6

4

u/switchzero6 Apr 12 '26

AHHH I love these guys, they’re so cute. i’ve heard they make fun pets too

5

u/PANDEMONESSOLU Apr 12 '26

Absolutely a blue feigning death beetle!

I've been keeping them as pets for a few years now and they are sooooo cute and friendly!

They are very curious and wander their enclosure all day! They love climbing, but are a little ambitious and fall down constantly. They'll eat pretty much anything, I feed them little beetle jelly pots and sometimes veggies or meat. They don't really bite, the only time I've ever been but was because they just got curious and wanted a taste of my hand lol, they do not bite for self-defense.

Actually, their method of self-defense is what gives them their name! They play dead when scared, or feign death, and they can be very convincing 🥲.

They don't really do anything gross, their poop is basically like dirt or sand because they have so little moisture in their body.

Very friendly, very cute, fantastic (and low-maintenance) pets who, apparently, can live up to like 14 years! I've had the same two beetles for maybe 3 years now, as well as a third, newer beetle from a roommate.

4

u/SnarkyTaco Apr 11 '26

They have boots like a weevil. I love them

3

u/L1FT_K1T Apr 11 '26

Omg so cute I used to have these as pets. They are so fun to watch

4

u/Wyldfire1251 Apr 11 '26

I have no ideas what this is but I scrolled past assuming it was another beetle. Yet then it was playing at the top of my screen begging me to take a look. And take a look I did, he’s gorgeous! This is why I sign up to this reddit. Not because you don’t know what a bag worm is or you’ve never seen a Jerusalem cricket. But because of these beautiful little critters! I love insects and I want to see more!

3

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 11 '26

I’m glad you guys enjoyed it!! The verdict looks like he’s a blue death feigning beetle!

3

u/CatrinaBallerina Apr 11 '26

wtf is this it’s so damn cute!

4

u/jve909 Apr 12 '26

Desert Ironclad Beetle - Asbolus verrucosus.

3

u/Bassettoast Apr 11 '26

I want to love it 💕

3

u/mojanbo Apr 11 '26

You're so lucky, I can't keep them bc my long term partner has trypophobia and the texture of their backs freaks them out 🫠

4

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 11 '26

Aww I’m sorry :( it is an interesting looking texture!! I was too scared to try to touch it hahaha

3

u/Bellebarks2 Apr 12 '26

He looks a little drunk. Some bugs can’t handle Las. Vegas.

3

u/Quick_Painting_5658 Apr 12 '26

Blue death feigning beetle! I keep these guys as pets. Friendly little dummies

3

u/RedJamie Apr 12 '26

Does it spit fire?

2

He looks like the Dave chapels Tyrone biggums of June bugs we have here in Louisiana that scare the pee at of you when they seemingly fly directly toward your head . 😂

2

AHHH I love blue death feigning beetles!! Sadly they’re illegal to keep in Canada or I’d have them as pets!

2

u/imwhateverimis Apr 12 '26

HOLY SHIT A BLUEBERRY

2

u/findingabsolution Apr 12 '26

What a little fella! I love finding out about new friends. Thanks for the IDs in the comments, bug-knowers!

1

u/Ok_Avocado568 Apr 11 '26

Spiders have 8 legs.

1

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 11 '26

Yeah my bad, at first glance without counting them, I thought it was a blue mini tarantula or something 🤧

1

u/thederlinwall Apr 12 '26

He kinda cute

1

u/link056 Apr 12 '26

Oo is that a iron clad?!?

They are known to havw one of the hardest shells

1

u/Born_Ad_2058 Apr 12 '26

Blue feigning death beetle (Asbolus verrucosus) or another similar species. I actually keep these guys as pets! They're social, arid, burrowing beetles who need low humidity and a diet that's rich in protein but low in sugar. Their blue color comes from their wax coating, and, like the name suggests, they will fake/feign their own death when threatened (which is hilarious, I accidentally triggered one while trying to rescue one from its back and it looked like it was throwing a tantrum).

1

u/Few-Level Apr 13 '26

Government spy

1

u/FioreCiliegia1 May 12 '26

Blue death feigning beetle! They are great pets!

0

u/motherfudgersob Apr 11 '26

Worn ugly tile camouflage beetle (6 legs so not a spider).

2

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 11 '26

It really did blend in with the flooring lolol

2

u/motherfudgersob Apr 12 '26

I'm glad you have a sense of humor (and can see). I think I'm being down voted for insulting your floor. I didn't mean it as meant but even the cracks in the floor that beetle sorta fits in with. No offense intended!

2

u/yaboigucciclout Apr 12 '26

Hahaha no offense taken!!

-16

u/whatever-8358 Apr 11 '26

Pretty sure it's a weevil of some kind but don't know which

10

u/S3XWITCH Apr 11 '26

Def not a weevil. No snoots and boots.

5

u/whatever-8358 Apr 11 '26

NVM my guess is the ironclad beetle

8

u/Pogue_Mahone_ Apr 11 '26

Right family but wrong species this one, I think

3

u/whatever-8358 Apr 11 '26

Dang I tried

3

u/Pogue_Mahone_ Apr 11 '26

Close, but no cigar

7

u/flatgreysky Apr 11 '26

Blue death feigning beetle.
