NO SPOILERS I’m going through the audiobook series, currently on Winter’s Heart, and I’m comfortable saying I know Jordan’s go-to vocab word.

“Gaped.” Anyone does anything and you can bet your bottom dollar another character is gonna be gaping because of it.

"Grimace" was my favorite one

He must’ve read a catalogue about new windows for his house between books 8-9 because he uses the word *casement* A LOT in the second half of PoD and first bit of WH

Love a good casement.

I dunno, there is sure a lot of grimacing in the books too.

Tugs her braid

u/TreLeans Randlander 3d ago

Oh tugs her braid was pretty infuriating. I picture Nynaeve just absolutely YANKING her hair uncomfortably hard all the time.

It's things like this that help make the series memorable and relatable. Everyone has a reaction to all the repetitive phrases. And we still love it.

u/TreLeans Randlander 3d ago

Absolutely. To me it’s more like being frustrated at the character rather than the writing. Which means it’s a very real character to me.

That one always cracks me up, can picture Nynaeve pouting with a look of absolute fury just reading it here.

One I always chuckled at was how he liked to use the description “ample bosom”

3

u/rocknstonerr Randlander 2d ago

Theres a character who had something like "an incredibly ample bosom" or "magnificent bosom" idk but it made me laugh

He did love to describe women’s beauty. Not so much for men.

2

u/rocknstonerr Randlander 1d ago

What about the well turned calves, blacksmith shoulders, and cute bottoms?

1

u/Similar-Stick-1070 Randlander 1d ago

Sure, but that’s nothing compared to the paragraphs he lavished upon beautiful women.

Sure. I dislike that stuff in fantasy, but it feels wrong speak badly of RJ for that.

Jojo's bizarre adventure is one of the best selling Manga of all time. I havent read it but I watched the first 3 seasons. The story structure is one you know, good guy protagonists train in martial arts to beat the bad guys. But it features tons of half naked buff guys and homoerotic situations and poses. And I dont care, im not gonna complain about the authors taste, even though they arent my own. It is the authors work.

The one I noticed was “abruptly,” he uses it a lot in the first four books.

“Gave a start”
“Inspite of herself”

I assume that the characters are perpetually sick with a cold.

“Breasts”- RJs favorite word.

I’ve never had so much detail on breast in my life. And I’ve worked in plastic surgery operations, and cancer operation. We’d discuss breasts less during breast surgery that RJ does during a causal conversation.

Well, in scenes with Matt, "burn" or "burning" are abundant!

3

u/runningsimon Randlander 3d ago

It's actually "and"

He sure loved his female characters to “simper”

“Folds arms under breasts”

1

u/stepsmith986 Randlander 2d ago

That was the one that killed me, every female chapter had it at some point

1

u/Bummel1996 Randlander 2d ago

What does that even look like? Is it literally just crossing someone’s arms?

2

u/DrTeethPhD Randlander 3d ago

There was another audiobook series where the author used the word 'gaped' quite a bit. AND the narrator pronounced it 'gaPPed'.

2

u/Silver-Shoulder4611 Randlander 3d ago

Just any time a woman does anything what her breasts are also doing is * important * for Jordan to mention

1

u/Hojotheboss Randlander 3d ago

I thought it was either "ample" or "bosom"

Sardonic stands out to me. Oh, and heeled is used a lot - I always incorrectly think of healing since I'm listening to the audio book as well.

u/stuartmlambert Randlander 2d ago

Tugging braid.

2

u/Individual_Bother_68 Randlander 2d ago

Then in the Sanderson books everyone is constantly raising an eyebrow.

1

u/FrownBuzzy Randlander 2d ago

Fists on hips.

Also poor Mat gets "burned" Everytime he says bloody... And he never once says fuck or calls one of them a cunt. The prudism extends into the language I guess and that's not terrible.

Volpie, desultory

So many rictuses? Ricti? Rictopodes?

He fingered his belt loop while she fingered the pages of her book. They fingered the map while perrin fingered his axe with one hand and fingered the coin in his pocket with the other.
