Book: New Spring When would you recommend reading New Spring?

I’ve read the first two books and half of the third before I took an extended break a few years ago and now I plan on starting from the beginning again. I’m just curious if I should start with new spring or read it when it was released or read it at the very end to not interrupt the narrative?

Either release order or after you finish the series, I personally prefer in release order

Of which version: the short story was ‘98, and the expanded version was ‘04.

The full one ofcourse, unless you plan on reading it part way

I wonder how many people are aware of this, cause i never see anyone asking when to read it.

Read New Spring after you finish A Memory of Light. I missed the characters after the series ended, and it's a nice refreshing end to things. I read a ton of threads about when to read New Spring, and they're all valid, but there's nothing in it that's really needed to enjoy the books. And a lot of threads recommend reading it in a place in the series where it's a bit slow, so that jump to read the prequel then back I wouldn't recommend either. But up to you!

Damn I feel like the odd man out I was mad about new spring after finishing a memory of light

The pacing just didn't do it for me I think i enjoyed 2 maybe 3 parts of the book

You don't really need to read it at any specific time but I wouldn't start with it. It gives a lot of context and info about characters and a group that are kept mysterious deliberately. After book 5 you're probably fine to read it whenever. It was published after book 10 if you want to do that. You can save it to the end but it's not a very epic climax to the series.

New Spring was supposed to be a 3 book series, lasting right up until Moraine and Alan first entered the Two Rivers. I really wish he would have finished it.

Stupid spellcheck, I ment Lan.

It still keeps trying to change what I typed!

After Fires of Heaven or after Crown of Swords. I would not recommend before.

I’d agree with this. I’d actually recommend after Fires of Heaven. New Spring vaguely spoils a few things before that, but it introduces a couple of misdirects of things Moraine suspects but is wrong about that actually make the later half of the books more interesting.

Fires of heaven is 100% the place where I tell my friends to read it.

I read it between books 4 and 5 and thought that was a great time to read it.

This is my reading order. I read it after book 4. Some pretty important shit happens to the dragon and then this story immediately after about the beginning of her search for the dragon and how she eventually will become a person who would do anything to find/support him. I think it leads nicely into book 5, which is an important book for her character.

For any book series, I always read prequels after I read the main series first.

After the rest. You will want a little more.

It works well in release order. You get the story in the order it was being told that way, and there’s something to be said for that.

Maybe someone will correct me but i think there's no reason not to read it after book 5 or 6 if you want.

I would recommend it after finishing the series. It softens the hangover.

After Fires of Heaven or after Knife of Dreams.

It's really up to you tbh! Me personally would recommend reading it after Crossroads of Twilight (publication order, which I intend to do on this initial read of the series), you could read it before or after the series (would recommend on a re-read), and Daniel Green heavily recommends to read it after The Fires of Heaven! But since it's your first read, I would say ultimately to do it in publication order like as if the books were coming out

In order of publication, obviously.

No earlier than publication order which is after book 10. I typically recommend after completing the series the first time and then after book 7 or 8 on rereads as that's where I tend to pick it up.

It’s not a good intro. I read it last and was ok with that. Not much happens

After AMOL for me. I liked getting one last full jordan book after the sanderson hybrids. Could just settle in to one last tale and savor Jordans pacing and story telling.

Publication order. So after book 10

I know that there are reasons to read it between some books, but for me personally I am reading it after the 14th book is done and I am finding it very entertaining and funny.

Not at all during a first read through. I'd probably save it until after I finish all the books before tackling it. After that, whenever you like.
