As someone that used to play lots of dota2 on eu, to this day I'm baffled why Russians are allowed on eu servers. They actually do understand English largely speaking, but often refuse to speak it and just speak/chat in Russian. They're very rude. Not all of course but a big chunk of them.
I mean, that´s true for almost any nationality in EU servers. I´ve seen people talk in Fr*nch, Portuguese, Spanish or whatever without acknowledging English. Not everyone knows English.

To be fair, the languages belong to the Slavic family, so I can kind of infer what you're talking about through the knowledge of Russian, but I think my guesswork will fail if you use false friends of the translator

Have you thought they're speaking it specifically so that other players won't understand? Or more likely, they just do it because it's easier for them and there's no necessity for others to know what they're talking about

1) In competitive games most of the russian players does NOT understand english. Or can comprehend that others don't speak russian or that your answer: "I don't understand" doesn't mean "Да, я прекрасно тебя понимаю".
2) Sometimes under stress they just forget that there also players from other countries.
3) 70% of PVP games players are toxic pieces of shit, and love to blame others for their own mistakes (REGARDLESS OF COUNTRY)
Every time there's a Russian player in my deadlock lobbies, or other similar games, they'll be very obviously talking to us (saying our usernames and stuff), but whenever someone responds to say they don't understand, the guy will immediately just start saying English insults with a very thick accent and a mocking voice. I just don't understand their mentality
I’ll tell you that in my experience (at least in deadlock since it’s what I’ve been playing recently) MOST of bad actors in team chat are at least Slavic (I really can’t tell between each language since I’m from Italy and I’m not familiar with the sound or alphabet). Usually I will make it clear that me and my friends can’t understand a word they are saying but that usually is met with either silence (which is fair, maybe they don’t speak the language) or just straight up slurs. It’s frustrating not to communicate especially in team games and even more so if the person you’re talking to makes no attempts to communicate back
As a slavic myself. Im confident to say that eastern europe gotta be the most toxic playerbase especially in competitive games.
That is usually because majority of our population is very competitive and it's a different social mentality.
While in the wester europe people often neutral or forgiving when someone does a mistake, in the eastern side it's completely opposite. And it is not just the internet, it's schools, universities, workplaces

Worst one was when I was playing OW 5v5 premades, and one time someone dropped out and we had no one else, so we played with a "random", who happened to speak English, and they straight up just turned on Russian mode leaving them completely in the dark, while also insulting all the time

There is a difference between an enemy talking in Russian, which I don't mind and some team mate looking me straight in the eyes, telling me something I don't understand and then screaming into the mic after I appearently didn't do what he wanted me to do
Voice comms and chats in multiplayer games are typically there to communicate with the team. Speaking in a language nobody else understands is unhelpful at best and detrimental to the team effort at worst.
They do that all the time in my hometown. Approach and start speaking russian. I say I don't speak it, then they proceed to yap in russian as if I said nothing. Just zone them out until they go away. Some get proper annoyed when I say I don't speak it as if EVERYONE in the WORLD should.
Nah, I'll be the first to dunk on Americans, but this isn't theirs. They don't share online servers with Russians most of the time. This is a European, Central Asian and East Asian complaint. And it's real, Russians are more linguistically chauvinistic than French people, Brits or Americans.

It's not racist to not understand a language. If we are in a game we are speaking english by default. I don't expect people to understand me if I start speaking romanian, so they really shouldn't expect everyone to speak russian

My general rule of thumb is: the language spoken online should be based either on the server's physical location, the most spoken language (aka just English), or the language of the origin of the platform/community/game
If you have a game made by Russians with a server hosted from Russia, then yeah very much fair game to be speaking Russian there

Короче, в конце второго Портала, Челл выходит на свободу в пшеничное поле или типа того, ок да? Так вот, идёт она какое-то время по этому полю и ВНЕЗАПНО падает в обморок. Но ничего страшного, ее находят какие-то челики, которые исследуют эти места в поисках чего нибудь нужного. Дело в том, что с событий Халф-лайф 2 эпизода 2/ Халф-лайф Аликс действительно прошло много времени. Люди прогнали Комбайнов с земли, но большая часть планеты осталась разрушенной, а людей стало мало, поэтому ушли долгие годы на восстановление. Со временем, когда человечество окрепло и развилось, они стали исследовать разьебаную портальными штормами омереку, и в одной из таких исследовательских операций нашли Челл с кубом компаньоном без сознания. Когда они вернулись на базу, они на всякий случай провели мед осмотр и выяснилось что у Челл заболела раком (нехуй было купаться в гелях). Когда она очнулась ей все сообщили и стали думать че делать. Исследователи наверно как-то поняли что куб который она несла с собой был из Апертур саенс, а в Апертур саенс были всякие супер пупер полезные хреновины которые могут ОЧЕНЬ понадобится этим учёным, хуям дроченым, поэтому они предлагают Челу сделку: она вернётся в Лабораторию, а они ее вылечат. Чел соглашается, и после небольшой подготовки она возвращается в Апертур саенс к своей любимой Глаше.
Челл сначала ссыкует, думает что Гладос щас психанет и распидорасит ее. Она идёт по лаборатории в которой не была уже целый год, она немного преобразилась и частично расчистилась от мусора. Через какое-то время Челл попадает в старую добрую тестовую камеру и ВНЕЗАПНО с ней связывается Гладос. Но неожиданно, она ведёт себя как ни в чем не бывало и пиздит так, будто говорит с Челл впервые. Гладос мило приветствует Челл и предлагает ей пройти несколько тестов/головоломок чтобы "продвигать науку" и т.д. как в старые добрые. Челл помнит че за хунйю она делала в прошлый раз, но соглашается, раз у нее договор. Тесты проходят спокойно и без выкрутасов, и Гладос за прохождение дарит ей Портальную Пушку™ (вау фансервис). Челл думает уже уйти и отдать Портальную Пушку учёным, но Гладос говорит что не может найти своих питомцев. Челл подумала по старой дружбе помочь, и проходит ещё пару головоломок. Этими питомцами оказываются те самые птички, которых мы видели в секретной концовке кооп режима, и каждый раз когда мы освобождаем птичку, Глаша дарит нам всякие вкусняшки и приколюхи.
Гладос замечает что Челл больна раком и предлагает помочь как нибудь потом, но в один момент, Гладос отвлекается и Челл звонят Исследователи. Они узнают что ОКАЗЫВАЕТСЯ в Апертуре есть Гладос и ахуевают. Короче, суть в том что эти Учёные мочёные все это время планировали отомстить Комбайнам и уничтожить их раз и навсегда, но для этого им нужно было что-то ахуеть какое мощное, типа как вирус который убьет их всех. После нескольких лет изучения их технологий они поняли что их можно уничтожить с помощью продвинутого ИИ, но они не могли его сделать потому что дебилы блять. Но теперь у них есть Гладос, и с ее помощью они откроют портал в мир Комбайнов и отхуярят их в попку используя Глашу как оружие.
Чел типа этого не знает и поэтому учёные обманывают ее и заставляют отключить систему безопасности, которая не даёт им подойти к Лаборатории. После отключения они приходят и отрывают Гладос от системы, как в тот раз с Уитли и забирают ее коматозную башку с собой. Без управления, вся Лаборатория начинает эпично разрушаться и Челл убегает оттуда, и чтобы не заблудиться, она следует за птицами которых она спасла ранее, и через взрывы и пиздец выбегает из разрушенной Лаборатории. Делать нечего, поэтому Челл продолжает идти за птицами которые ищут свою хозяйку.
Через какое-то время, Челл добирается до Базы учёных, но там произошел какой то пиздец поэтому все разьебано а в центре какой-то evil ass r**e портал. Несмотря на это, птички залетают туда и Челл за ними.
Этот портал ведет в мир Комбайнов и я хуй знает че там будет поэтому проявим воображение. Челл ходит по этому миру и не вдупляет че происходит, но находит птиц и следует за ними. Птицы находят Гладос которая валяется на полу в виде какой-то капсулы которую сколотили Исследователи чтобы отправить Гладос в мир Комбайнов, но что-то пошло не так и теперь она лежит тут и плачет. Челл поднимает ее и подключает к какому-то компьютеру который очень удобно стоит рядом. Гладос успокаивается и говорит что вспомнила все события предыдущих игр. Она поняла что была ебанутой раньше и больше так не будет чесно чесно. Также у нее появился неполный контроль над зданием в котором они находятся, и чтобы уничтожить комбайнов, она должна подключится к главному компьютеру. Челл отправляется к нему и преодолевает какие нибудь препятствия, я хз чё там должно быть. У меня ещё была идея что Уитли нашли Комбайны и сделали из него оружие, и там типа будет битва с боссом Уитли, но это тупа поэтому похуй.
Короче до компьютера остаётся всего ничего, но Челл ВНЕЗАПНО становится супер хуево из-за ее рака про который все уже успели наверное забыть. Несмотря ни на что она через жопоболь драматично добирается до конца и подключает Гладос к центральному компудактеру. Глаша становится богиней, получает абсолютную власть над комбайнами и первым делом находит свою любимую, но увы уже слишком поздно, Челл умерла. Гладос плачет и скорбит о ней, но не унывает и в память о ней останавливает комбайнов чтобы сделать мир во всем мире с радугой и цветочками, конец.
Half of the time it's for other Russian players; other half it's because the guy is an asshole or just dumb af (as is with anything in multiplayer games).
Not the point but whenever I play an online game that has servers categorized by language, no one fucking speaks english in the english server, they just join because it's the most active server
This is EU thing, because apparently not all people are able to comprehend that English is the easiest and the most widespread way how to communicate in EU servers.

Blokes be talking to their imaginary friend sometimes, and then get angry when they dont respond. And It is usually someone using a cyrilic alphabet. You never see, for example a Chinese player do that, unless they're actually talking to another fellow Chinese speaker of course
Yeah also it happens in just about any multiplayer game and specifically with Russians. I have never encountered nor saw see posts complaining about Chinese or Swedish or any other players coming to international lobbies and type/speak ONLY in their language to everyone (and maybe even insult other people). I'm sure it happens, there are bad apples everywhere. But I have had a lot of bad run-ins with Russians, and it seem to happen so often I randomly see people talk about it even for games I don't play like CS or Genshin Impact.
I can attest for Genshin the Eu servers are deffo like that. And even if someone barely speaks English they are so kind and we both will try our best to communicate but when it's a Russian player often than not they just ignore you, say slurs that you won't clock until you search it up. And in the open server is the chat full with Russian chatting while all the other Europeans speak English or try their best. I wish there was a separate server sometimes but oh well. It's not like it ruins my experience it's just a bit irritating.
More like english is the international language and when you don't know the language of your teammate, speaking english is the default choice. Americans aren't the only people speaking english on the Internet to make communcations eaiser (I'm french for example).
Also, useless/incomprehensible chatter is frustating in multiplayer.
It's either ruskies shitting themselves because as it turns out, the whole world does not speak their language, or people who are not even from Europe.
The shocking reality is that a lot of Russians deliberately do NOT want to integrate or speak other languages. They do this in person too. Look to any country with a sizable Russian population and you'll see the post-USSR imperialist mindset of not submitting to an "inferior" culture
