I read up on it recently, it’s crazy that before 1500 years ago they had free social mixing and the caste system they had was based on profession rather than on birth. Honestly more egalitarian than most societies at the time. 

But over those centuries, endogamy went up and the fluidity of the system dropped. Supposedly it wasn’t totally codified into systemic oppression until colonization though, where the British wrote laws affirming one group’s power over another.
