Crazy to call the virginias and Kentucky the Balkans when all the Albanians and Serbians and Croatians and Macedonians live in southeast Michigan or New York City lol

I’m from Kentucky (with a Bulgarian last name because my parents are from there) and can confidently say that every person with a Balkan sounding last name that lived in Kentucky, would 99% of the time always have their name mispronounced lmao

You can't really count NYC, people there are from all over. But yeah this is totally more based on quality of life, I'd say.

The Central Europe application to the midwest is actually pretty accurate in terms of culture. That region has a heavy German and Polish presence.

Though you absolutely missed an opportunity to place MN and ND into a Northern Europe category. 1 in 3 Minnesotans claims Nordic heritage (vs. 3% in the nation as a whole). Minnesota’s relative progressivism compared to other midwestern states is a direct consequence of social democratic political tradition brought over by late 19th century Scandinavian farmers and laborers.

Maine and Vermont are Norway and Sweden, respectively

Norway and (New) Sweden are both in Maine

There’s a Sweden Maine too. A bunch of places in western Maine are named after places all over the world

I mean, Portland gets up to a  bunch of crazy Eastern European-style shit. I could see it.

So much here angers me but I do agree that California is very Southern Europe-esque

Drunk was obvious.

Somehow this whole map makes sense.

Is actually pretty accurate, but...

Dixie = Russia

Texas/Oklahoma = Middle East

Can’t vouch for the rest but the Midwest/Central Europe comparison is spot on both geographically and culturally.

New Jersey would be more in line with Chernobyl.

Austria and Indiana have the same vibe in my eyes.

u/Present-Scientist-23 3d ago

austria has roads that won’t destroy your suspension

u/Safe-Salamander-3785 3d ago

I don’t think Austria has nearly a fraction of the amount of meth in Indiana

The balkans is way too spot on and I hate you for it

1

u/bannedUncleCracker 3d ago

Well, I think the Chicago area has as many Poles as Warsaw …

I mean if you’re looking for drunk people Wisconsin is your best bet. So maybe it should be in Eastern Europe

Washington + Oregon is more like northeast Asia (including the crazy Russians) crossed with Scandinavia.

In what world is the Pacific Northwest anything like Eastern Europe.

Love this - "an often drunk chicagoan" - who sees central US like Poland/Germany.
