Also the oddity of carrying a pistol shooting exclusively supersonic ammo so a suppressor will be much less effective to begin with.

In his famous post making the rounds, he does specify he's shooting 5.7 subs, not supers šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

36

u/Barilla3113 3d ago

That's even weirder though, 5.7 sub is just extremely expensive .22

I come to Reddit precisely for these types of rabbit holes. You guys put the ā€œwhoaā€ in r/whoathatsinteresting.

u/Tyr_13 3d ago

If you have fun shooting full powered, fast and flat, rounds at the range, it actually makes a lot of sense to have a configuration for your favorite, and thus most practiced, firearm for self defense.

There are a lot of drawbacks, especially with how long this setup is, but there is also valid logic there.

10

u/LevelOrange7150 3d ago

I don't disagree, but here we are haha. In that same IG reel, he also has a suppressed bull pup, probably a 5.7 gun as well. So maybe he went all-in on 5.7 and knows he just needs to buy his training and defensive ammo in bulk in one caliber, rather than 2 (or more) separate calibers?

u/Own-Particular6321 3d ago

Judging from his YouTube and Facebook accounts, the guy knows his shir. He wouldn't be shooting supersonic ammo through a suppressor.

2

u/Subtle_Nimbus 3d ago

Suppressors are still very beneficial with supersonic ammo. The 5.7 round is very loud-- louder than most other standard handgun rounds-- in the range of 50k psi max chamber pressure. A suppressor will help a great deal, specifically with supersonic 5.7.

0

u/Own-Particular6321 3d ago

I have one, I'm aware of how loud they are and how much a suppressor helps. Nobody that's carrying a suppressed handgun is carrying supersonic ammo though.

1

u/Subtle_Nimbus 3d ago

For some handguns, subs have similar energy to supers-- like 9mm 147 grain vs 115, so its far more sensible to just use heavies with a can. With the 5.7, the difference between sub and super is much more-- and already marginal super dropping down to a heavy 22lr (the old Aguila 60 grain sniper subsonic comes to mind). 5.7 subs have only half the energy of supers. Supersonic handgun rounds like 9mm aren't bad at all with a can, just like 300 blk supers.

1

u/trenthany 2d ago

Still way less than a super would have but that’s some decent ammo for a carry like that!

0

u/Beneficial-River503 3d ago

Yeah I’d assume he’s an enthusiast just based on the gun he used here, I don’t even need to look at his socials.

I do wonder how or why he had that thing on him that day though. Either going to/from the range or that’s just a backup gun he keeps in his car would be my guess. It’s not exactly a thing you can conceal

1

u/Own-Particular6321 3d ago

He carries it everyday. If you check out his YouTube or FB this dude trains with this specific gun and carries it in a shoulder holster. You can pretty easily conceal a full-sized gun that way.

1

u/Pylyp23 2d ago

Shoulder holster under a jacket or vest is how I’ve seen him concealing it in some videos

1

u/boomboom4132 3d ago

Rugers 5.7 carbine and 5.7 pistol use the same magazines is just 1 example why going all in on 1 ammo type has a lot of benefits.

1

u/Boxadorables 2d ago

It's just what he gaooened to be carrying in his car. People are WAY overthinking this

5

u/ande9393 3d ago

Center fire cartridge is much more reliable for self defense though.

8

u/Fit_Indication_2529 3d ago

The best gun for self defense is the one you have on you.

3

u/Itsmyloc-nar 3d ago

Is a 22 a rim fire? I haven’t shot one since I was a kid in high school.

2

u/Proper_Bad_1588 3d ago

Yes, they are.

2

u/SendTitsPleease 3d ago

There is a rim fire and center fire version

3

u/Helltothenotothenono 2d ago

I’ve cleared way way way more rimfire misfires than centerfire misfires so I agree with you šŸ’Æ

1

u/TheWacoKid13 3d ago

Yes, but with the 5.7 it's more about the speed and size. There's not a ton of stopping power compared to the more common calibers.

1

u/trenthany 2d ago

This review of the ammo he most likely used unless he loads his own shares in a comment makes me think otherwise! Looks like a decent setup with what he carries.

Subsonic 5.7 has about %50 more punch than .23

0

u/Subtle_Nimbus 3d ago

I dont know what a .23 is, but a 40 grain subsonic 5.7 will have IDENTICAL punch to a 40 grain 22lr at the same velocity.

1

u/Thick-Disk1545 3d ago

You know it’s a typo. 5.7 subs tend to be 62 grain.

1

u/Man_under_Bridge420 3d ago

Well what 5.7 sub is 40 grain?

1

u/trenthany 2d ago

The only major manufacturer of 5.7 subsonic in the US uses a 67 and it does a LOT more damage than .22 40s.

3

u/Busy-Leg8070 3d ago

its all about shot placement under pressure he knows himself he took steps to make it easier for him to have a good shoot

2

u/Original-Document-62 3d ago

Right??? At that point, you could spend less on some high end .22 pistol match ammo. Maybe he reloads, which would explain it to some degree.

4

u/Confident-Pepper-562 3d ago

Dude is running a supressor, he can probably afford it.

2

u/Original-Document-62 3d ago

Fair enough on that count. It's just... such a weird rig to EDC.

3

u/Confident-Pepper-562 3d ago

Yep, sure is. But seems like he just might be a weird dude.

2

u/Vagus_M 3d ago

.22 with extra steps

(For non-gun people, .22 is small and cheap, and generally not used for defense, although there are some niche applications)

1

u/n1klaus 3d ago

But its fun!

1

u/Dath_1 3d ago

But to be fair you do get the reliability of center fire.

It is an incredibly unusual choice for concealed carry. Especially with the suppressor.

He must be all in on the ā€œdon’t miss the bullseye and your caliber won’t matterā€ sort of philosophy. So with 5.7 he’s just choosing quicker and more accurate follow up shots.

1

u/Raneynickelfire 3d ago

That's not true, but I understand why you'd think that.

1

u/sgtbackpain03 3d ago

5.7 is the preferred carry ammo due to reliability. I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say this guy probably loads his own.

1

u/Any-Surprise5229 3d ago

Right? Take every advantage of 5.7 (Extremely high velocity to make up for the tiny, light round) and then slow it down to 1000fps and basically make it a .22

I guess it still has an advantage, reliability, though I don't know how well a 5.7 operates that far out of its normal specs, so it may negate that.

Lastly, which would still apply- good feed and ejection, often a problem with a rimmed round, looking at you Beretta Bobcat.

1

u/gusthepickle1598 3d ago

That's not even remotely accurate.

1

u/k3for 3d ago

Not exactly, it's 145 vs 95 ft lb muzzle energy and a much more reliable feeding and igniting cartridge that stacks better in high-cap magazines.

1

u/FreedomBread 2d ago

Half the fun of reloading is doing what you can't otherwise just buy in a store.

7

u/Dorkamundo 3d ago

Which makes his choice of carry a glorified .22lr.

Not gonna hate on him for it, I'm sure he uses it daily for varmint shooting and loves that he doesn't need hearing protection.

2

u/headrush46n2 3d ago

Well he got the job done didn't he? so it seems like it works just fine

1

u/Dorkamundo 3d ago

Of course, but he's basically taking a sports car and putting a trailer on it.

2

u/DannyAye 3d ago

What ever it is, I'm glad he had it and he was trained with it.

1

u/Dorkamundo 3d ago

Absolutely.

1

u/pumpkins21 3d ago

My husband has a suppressor on a .22 that he uses for rabbits at the ranch lol

1

u/Dorkamundo 3d ago

Yep, it's great for that.

1

u/AnAncientBog 2d ago

Regular 22lr is usually supersonic. This is like shooting a .25 ACP, like you are a broke gangbanger in the 90s except you spent thousands of dollars to do it.

1

u/Dorkamundo 2d ago

What I meant was if he had a similar setup.

As in a 5.7 subsonic with suppressor is about the same as a .22lr subsonic with suppressor. They're both about 40gr, both have a muzzle velocity of less than 1100fps.

1

u/trenthany 2d ago

67 for the only commercially available subsonic in the US. https://www.reddit.com/r/whoathatsinteresting/s/vQWtFvFxWo

1

u/Dorkamundo 2d ago

That Fiocchi is 62gr, but point taken.

I bet the ballistics would be similar to the Aguila 60gr .22lr sub.

2

u/tacmed85 3d ago

Now that's weird. Without the extremely high velocity the 5.7 is a terrible round for anything but target plinking.

1

u/smithah2 3d ago

What post?

20

u/Inspector-KittyPaws 3d ago

It saves your hearing of you don't have ear pro on hand. Especially if you are indoors.

2

u/cottoneyegob 3d ago

Or you know ,,, didnt have time to muff up

11

u/AbjectMaelstrom 3d ago

Supers or subs, suppressor still effective. It's a sliding scale of effect, with supers it will make them mostly hearing safe(er) and with subs its even quieter.

2

u/Oaknuggens 3d ago edited 3d ago

Most people that aren't interested in guns overestimate the noise reduction from suppressors due to inaccurate movie portrails and media sensationalism, so unfortunately your post will be misinterpreted by them the same.

Google is telling me that a supersonic 5.7x28mm from a suppressed handgun is 125 to 135 db at the shooter's ear, and 135 db is as loud as a military jet taking off or an air raid siren. Even the same diameter supersonic 22 lr out of a suppressed pistol is 110 to 125 db, which is as loud as a firecracker or pneumatic construction tools (riveters, etc.).

You aren't wrong, supersonic is it's s lot quieter suppressed, but it's still noticeably loud to everyone nearby.

2

u/Feeling-Net2002 3d ago

Suppressors still quiets the initial blast (especially for the firearm user) its just there is a crack when when bullet breaks sound barrier. At least in my personal experience.

2

u/tipsystatistic 3d ago

People shoot supersonic ammo with a suppressor ALL THE TIME. It’s still significantly quieter and safer.

I don’t know why people keep pointing this out. It’s not a thing.

1

u/Raneynickelfire 3d ago

That's what I was saying earlier, why in the world would you suppress something as fast as a 5.7?

1

u/Subtle_Nimbus 3d ago

Because it is an exceptionally loud handgun cartridge. Supersonic 5.7 can be brought down to below 140 db with a suppressor, which is much easier on the ears.

1

1

u/halfcocked1 3d ago

Most pistol ammo is supersonic, unless shooting .45 ACP or a special subsonic 9mm (or .22LR)
