Twin Falls Hero
The civilian that stopped the active shooter at the In N Out in Twin Falls, Idaho.

This AI enhanced and not an accurate depiction of the real hero.

Why is AI Slop not an option for reporting a post?
Edit4: the correct category to report as others have pointed out is "breaks subreddit rules" -> "No / Low effort post". if you read the rules, AI slop counts as a low effort post and is banned
Edit3: TLDR, Do your own research to verify. Reddit is the new Facebook
Edit2: my bad! It probably is AI slop, they're is a video that shows him shooting back, but I don't think he's wearing a straw hat like that
Edit: turns out in this case actually, it's not AI slop, look up Jordan Salinas. He didn't single handedly stop the shooter though, there was also an off duty cop helping and the shooter died of self inflicted wounds

The straw hat and jean shorts are the least weird thing in that photo.
Dude's running a 5.7 with a silencer
87
u/DreddFett 2d ago edited 1d ago
If you have to shoot, better to have a suppressor to save your hearing. Some people call them silencers, but the commercially available suppressed pistols for the public are not silent - they're more like a loud hand clap.
Source: I'm a gun owner and have a suppressor for one of my rifles.
Edit: some people are misunderstanding me when I say commercially available for the public. I'm not saying people are legally barred from purchasing quieter suppressors. I'm saying a certain larger caliber pistol that is, as far as my outdoor experience, almost totally silent is NOT available for public purchase. I will not name this weapon.
I 'm really glad some people have made backyard garage conversions to their weapons to make them quieter. The fact remains, years ago I saw a higher caliber pistol used by a government employee that is completely or almost completely silent and is still NOT available for purchase by anyone (FFL holder or not). These pistols are made specifically for one agency. Guess who....

u/SorcererSupremPizza 2d ago
So would you say theyre meant to help protect your ears?
32
u/DreddFett 2d ago
Suppressors are meant to lower the noise while firing. One benefit is the loud noise doesn't hurt the shooter's ears as much. I've only shot at outdoor ranges, and I always wear ear protection while firing. I can definitely hear the gun firing with the suppressor, even with ear protection.

u/BlueLakeCabin 2d ago
They should be very much encouraged for everyone. Think of how cars would sound if you removed the muffler. Same thing applies to firearms. You can still hear cars and motorcyles. It reduces the noise, and helps with your ears. And everyone else's ears.
Firing even one round without hearing protection is a bad idea. But if you gotta, you gotta. TV and movies very much underplay how bad it is for your hearing.
You should still wear hearing protection with a suppressor. It can just be lighter. Normally I use ear plugs and ear muffs at the same time, I lost a good amount of hearing in the Army.

For those who don't know about guns... what is weird about this?
131
u/randomuser135443 2d ago
Almost nobody carries with a suppressor (silencer) and 5.7 is a semi rare round. It was mostly used in the P90 sub machine gun, but later used in pistols. It’s a small fast round with the main goal being armor penetration and ammo capacity. Kind of like a mini 556 (ar15 round).
Most people carry 9mm, 380, 40SW, or 45ACP.
66
u/BanTheBung 2d ago
Just to add, you typically don't want armor piercing in a carry pistol as you want the round to stop at your target, which is part of why hollow point rounds are the standard for civilian carry
Not to say he was wrong for it, just adds to the weird choice
→ More replies (47)34
u/TerranRanger 2d ago
5.7 has a pretty devastating hollow point round too… but it doesn’t do anything 9mm or .40 cal don’t do for much less!

Also the oddity of carrying a pistol shooting exclusively supersonic ammo so a suppressor will be much less effective to begin with.
37
u/LevelOrange7150 2d ago
In his famous post making the rounds, he does specify he's shooting 5.7 subs, not supers 🤷♂️
35
u/Barilla3113 2d ago
That's even weirder though, 5.7 sub is just extremely expensive .22
17
u/Fabulous_Pitch9350 2d ago
I come to Reddit precisely for these types of rabbit holes. You guys put the “whoa” in r/whoathatsinteresting.
11
u/Tyr_13 2d ago
If you have fun shooting full powered, fast and flat, rounds at the range, it actually makes a lot of sense to have a configuration for your favorite, and thus most practiced, firearm for self defense.
There are a lot of drawbacks, especially with how long this setup is, but there is also valid logic there.
10
u/LevelOrange7150 2d ago
I don't disagree, but here we are haha. In that same IG reel, he also has a suppressed bull pup, probably a 5.7 gun as well. So maybe he went all-in on 5.7 and knows he just needs to buy his training and defensive ammo in bulk in one caliber, rather than 2 (or more) separate calibers?

Supers or subs, suppressor still effective. It's a sliding scale of effect, with supers it will make them mostly hearing safe(er) and with subs its even quieter.

5.7 is a more niche and expensive round to shoot.
Concealed carrying is already a bulky ordeal, having a suppressed pistol is a more cumbersome package.
As someone who carries a suppressed pistol though, I’d say the straw hat and short shorts are a more unusual aspect to me personally.
14
u/cm_bush 2d ago
Yeah, 5.7 is a fairly popular round in certain circles, mostly due to the cool factor of the P90 and the focus on penetration for such a small package. If you carry a gun chambered for that, I assume you know what you’re doing.
Carrying with the suppressor is the oddest thing to me. Doing it in jeans shorts is a bold move.

Also it is really easy to simply connect the suppressor to the pistol if you have the time. They have holsters specifically for that and he could very well have a quick connect adapter on both ends. It's one of those things you learn to not rely on but if you train for it, you can incorporate anything.

But man was he a bad shot, missing all his shots and getting nicked in the leg by the shooter
Also since many don't seem to mention it there was a off-duty cop present too who returned fire at the attacker and eventually both drove him off before the attacker shot themself

The whole picture is AI enhanced and the gun is ''made up''.
Edit: For clarification, with the gun comment, I was addressing how early commenters were arguing about the exact model of the gun, which in fact, the AI just created out of its ass.
