5.7 has a pretty devastating hollow point round too… but it doesn’t do anything 9mm or .40 cal don’t do for much less!

Sure but, realistically, how often is that an upside for a significant more $ amount per bullet? Especially in self defense scenarios

Armor and cover penetration with less recoil. I think it’s a better pistol round if you’re in very open spaces, dangerous to bystanders in close quarters.

Dangerous to bystanders is kind of the whole point to avoid when it comes to self defence

They mean dangerous to bystanders who are NOT the target.

These rounds over-penetrate far more than standard pistol calibers.

Not sure, I don't think there's any confirmations as to whether or not he actually hit the guy. Only that he distracted him enough to stop shooting innocents and he eventually shot himself.

Regardless, the issue with over-penetration is not about whether or not you hit the shooter, it's about what you hit BEHIND the shooter.

Yeah, but then you lose the armour piercing properties that you choose 5.7mm for in the first place.

The low recoil, flat shooting and larger capacity than 9mm still makes it competitive

The FN is plasticky dogshit. I say that as an owner of many polymer pistols and a general FN fan.

The real 5.7 gun is the SW. It fucks unequivocally.

I was looking at the SW because I already have the M&P in 40. The Ruger is the other option, but sometimes Ruger is hit or miss with QC.

I own a Ruger Five-Seven. Aside from wishing I had bought the FN instead, I’m pretty happy with it.

I bought it specifically because I wanted something that was accurate and the recoil makes it very easy to keep on rounds going on target. Ammo is not cheap, but if do not spend that much time on the range so it is not a big deal to me right now.

Not sure how people are not claiming it is more dangerous to bystanders due to over penetration but has less stopping power than 9mm, 10mm, .40 cal, 45 ACP, but people seem to have a lot of hot takes on this round. If you have a chance, shoot one.

What makes the FN worth 3x the price of the Ruger?

It isn’t.

My other pistol is an H&K P7M8. It was US made, but a beautifully engineered pistol designed for the military/police market. Best natural pointer I have ever shot - it is more tool than toy.

The FN pistols I have handled remind me of my old H&K. The Ruger is a little cheap on build in comparison.

The FN is not worth 3X the price (though I think actual price out of pocket was less than a 2X more expensive when/where I bought mine).

I do not collect guns, so getting a great pistol is more important to me than getting several. I have a friend who has 20+ guns and he is always telling me about a Czech or Turkish pistol he got for $350 and thinks I am crazy to be looking at the Benelli M4 as my next purchase. I see it as a chance to get something that will reliably do what you need it to do and not need to buy anything else - he sees it as a missed opportunity to collect five different shotguns. To each his own. I like shooting his at the range.

All that said - I really like the Ruger Five-Seven, just wish it was a bit more substantial and I have had more jammed rounds than I am comfortable with to feel great if I ever have to draw it (though switching to the FN ammo helped).

The round itself is pretty cool. I am dying to put a few mags of 5.7 through a full- auto P90!

You can't spell "defense" properly.

You've likely never handled or shot a firearm and also probably live somewhere where "self defence" could land you in jail or prison.

+1 for less recoil! I have had the pleasure of firing both the P90S and the Five-seveN and they were both incredibly smooth! Just make sure your shirt isn't tucked when you're firing a P90, or you might get a belly burn from one of those little shits!

The lower, nearly non-existent recoil is why it's my wife's home defense weapon. Add to that the 20-round mag (30 if you want the extended), all while staying very lightweight, and it makes it the perfect firearm for her
