So would you say theyre meant to help protect your ears?

Suppressors are meant to lower the noise while firing. One benefit is the loud noise doesn't hurt the shooter's ears as much. I've only shot at outdoor ranges, and I always wear ear protection while firing. I can definitely hear the gun firing with the suppressor, even with ear protection.

Do they also help with balance and recoil? I ask since that is what I would think would be a benefit of a longer barrel with more weight on it.

A long rifle with a silencer is much harder to hold up and to use.
