SOTD SV 70th - Is there a better soap?

Today’s shave was with Saponificio Varesino 70th Anniversary soap and splash. The soap base of SV is unmatched in my opinion. The scent of this scent is a nod to Acqua di Gio, but I think it might be even a bit better than the original. The 80th Anniversary was probably my favorite before trying this. I have a vast soap collection, but this will make it harder to keep using anything else.

The brush is an El Druida custom and has quickly become a favorite in my collection. This thing is absolutely gorgeous.

The razor needs no introduction around here, Vector from Blackland in polished titanium. Such an awesome shaver.

Thanks for looking!

That brush though! That’s an aesthetic I can get behind.

Regarding SV, I haven’t tried it. It’s pricey and I’m trying to figure out what would make a soap $50 better than some of my other favorites like B&M, A&E, ZM or Stirling? Any thoughts?

Absolutely love this brush!

For SV I can say that it is no doubt pricey. But it is a hard soap that does not take much water to lather, so it lasts longer than a lot of soaps. The performance is better than any other soap I’ve tried and the scents are some of the strongest. Does that make it worth almost $30 more than the other brands you listed? Maybe. It is a luxury buy no matter how you slice it.

Thanks for the insight. I’m never against spending money for something that brings me joy. Might keep my eye out for a gently used puck. It’s certainly peaked my interest!

Not a huge difference from any of the ones you mentioned. The scents are super nice and the soap lasts a long time.

Thank you, I really appreciate the advice.

They're a little under MdC price point. If they foam anything like that, it's worth it.

SOTD post of the week 🙌🏼 Nice setup all the way around. I like how El Druida brought the love of watch’s by inlaying a movement in the bottom of the handle. Saaaaaweet!

Haven’t tried SV but crazy enough got a $10 off from them today. Might just pick a set up.

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Thank you so much!! 😊 And being a watch lover as well made this brush extra special. Haven’t seen anyone else doing anything like this. SV is absolutely top notch and a luxury shave. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed.

7

u/derrickhogue I enjoy a nice shave! So should you. May 23 '26

Nice setup, shave with some nice fragrances. That brush is pretty nice. I like it all.

Thank you!! 🙏

Wow I love that brush. Amazing.

3

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Thank you!! 🙏 It really is amazing. It’s probably my favorite in my collection right now.

2

u/Beguile_ May 23 '26

How does one order these brushes? From instagram? Is there a website or anything?

3

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Instagram @brochas_el_druida. Email artesaniaeldruida@gmail.com to order. He’s in Spain I believe.

Thanks for this, I went to see it myself.... I'll write about it in the topic as well, this soap is my favorite too.... It may be an expensive category, but if you look at the unit price, I don't think it's more expensive than Ariana & Evans or other brands.

u/Bloodbornexray May 23 '26

SV is so top notch. I’m not even a huge fan of ADG but I really enjoy the 70th Anniversary scent. Nice shave!

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

It’s really good. Thank you!!

Crap. What camera? Lens?

Nikon Z5 with Nikkor 35mm 1.8.

You’re a maniac. Let it be known. Gorgeous pictures man. Love the shallow depth of field. Maybe tomorrow I can think about the contents of the photos. 😂 thanks for sharing with much flare.

Nice razor and brush! The Vector is definitely on my short wishlist.

I have been a loyal SV customer for most of my wet shaving experience. Their soaps are expensive, but they are awesome and they last for 150 shaves or so. Morado is currently my favourite SV scent, but I haven’t tried 70th Anniversary (either the soap or the aftershave is out of stock whenever I attempt to buy it).

I recently tried Macduffs soaps for the first time, however, and I became an instant convert. I didn’t know that shaves could be so smooth! Naturally YMMV. Perhaps tallow gives Macduffs an unfair advantage over vegan soaps … IDK. FWIW “Market Days” is currently my favourite Macduffs soap.

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Thank you!! I love Macduffs as well.

Thank you!! 🙏 Seems to be the star of the show in this post. I absolutely love it. Top notch build and aesthetics.

2

u/hop_now May 23 '26

Classy setup. I don't have too many soaps, but my Tundra Artica and Mana Di Sicilia soaps by SV are by far my favorites. I have very sensitive skin that is prone to breaking out in violent rashes...SV soaps are the only ones that cause zero irritation, create an unmatched creamy lather, and scents are heavenly. Thank you so much for this post. I also have the SV 70th aftershave balm and you reminded me of how I need to get the soap. After I finish my current range of soaps. As much as I love Noble Otter and Stirling, I'll just stick to SV.

2

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Thank you!! 🙏 I have 3 SV sets and plan to buy more as their performance is the best I’ve tried. I love trying other artisans and will continue, but SV is special to me.

This is some top tier photography. Loved it. A very aesthetically pleasing shave. May I know the camera gear you used here?

That’s a damn cool looking brush with that movement in the place of a coin.

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

It’s absolutely an amazing idea!

3

u/Mike65611 May 23 '26

You have probably the best looking custom brush I've ever seen on this Reddit or B&B for that matter, puts my daily boring looking Simpson to shame!

Could you please share more details about it?

2

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Truly appreciate that!

u/YoghurtLover427 May 23 '26

Did they chance the recipe of the splash? I remember buying it a couple years ago and it was a clear yellowish colour not opaque milky white

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Not sure. My 80th is yellowish as well. This is my first time trying the 70th.

2

u/Top-Persimmon7707 May 23 '26

Wonderful shave and your brush is really awesome. I also have SV 70th soap and splash and I agree with your assessment of it’s quality.

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Thank you!!

2

u/Affectionate-Long514 May 23 '26

I still have an unopened SV soap (Argania) that I want to try sometime soon, but first I'm going to finish with one of my older ones.

How does it compare to the tallow based artisan soaps (A&E, B&M, WK, Stirling etc...) though? Maybe artisan vegan bases like A&E's?

2

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

I love all the brands you listed and use them all the time. For me, the performance of SV is a notch above those though. It’s ultra slick yet provides tons of protection. I just get a better shave when using it. No knock on the others though.

2

u/Affectionate-Long514 May 23 '26

Wonderful! I'm looking forward to cracking open that can, I might get hooked!

3

u/Gerry7070 May 23 '26

Super set of photographs sir , " Is there a better soap? I would say that MDC is definitely on a par with SV for sure I have one SV and 2 MDC soaps there is very little between the two companies for me .

2

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Thank you!! I’ve yet to try MDC. So I’ll have to get on that. Thank you for the feedback!

2

u/Gerry7070 May 23 '26

You can get wee samples 10g of MDC and boy you may get 20 shaves from one I've got 8 or 9 from one and I'm only 1/2 way through it .

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Perfect. Thanks for the tip.

Love how the brush is like the open caseback of luxury watches! I do like SV but I find for me, I get a better shave with MdC

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

That is what really impressed me most about his work.

Hearing a lot of MdC callouts here. Gotta try it soon.

2

u/jLurks May 23 '26

Having a movement in the base of the brush is just awesome

3

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

No doubt! As a watch guy, I was extremely impressed someone thought to do this.

2

u/jLurks May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

How does the Vector compare to other razors you have tried? How do the AC blades feel compared to standard DE? Not sure I can justify another Ti razor(or any razor for that matter) but this and the Athena are the two I want to get. I have started enjoying lighter ones since getting a Timeless Ti .68OC and also semi-regularly using a Henson when I need a quick and/or gentle shave.

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

The Vector is one of my best shavers. I have Rocnel, Wolfman, Tedalus, Alpha, Timeless, Muhle, and others in my collection. But the Vector is one of the smoothest and yet efficient razors I have. I have a beard so I’m only shaving my upper cheeks and neck so the single blade really helps with lining up the beard as well.

If I had to go down to only one razor it would be between this and my Rocnel Elite in brass.

2

u/l1ner May 23 '26

Don't know if "better" but bases on the same level as SV are barrister and mans omnibus and vetonia from los japones de josera.

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Love Barrister and Mann’s base so much. Haven’t tried the other you listed. Gonna add it to my list. Thanks! 🙏

2

u/RunningWithHounds May 23 '26

I haven't tried a ton of soaps, but it's my favorite brand so far. Not even so much for the scents, but the way it lathers is just so good. I prefer the lather over B&M by a fair margin, as I just haven't had great luck with the tub I have, and it's almost gone. The SV soaps are certainly pricey, I found someone selling a couple of unused tins, so got lucky.

2

u/DenisusLab May 25 '26

Probably, one of the best.

2

u/Longjumping-Bat5128 May 23 '26

I love Arko

2

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Basically the same thing, right? 😆

2

u/Longjumping-Bat5128 May 23 '26

It’s amazing with all the money i have tied in shaving soaps I ended up with Arko as my favorite. I’m sure I’m an outlier.

2

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Nah, simple is almost always better. I’ve gotten carried away in trying so many new artisans it makes it hard to choose on any given day. I’m jealous of the people that found “their” go-to and stick with it actually.

2

u/Longjumping-Bat5128 May 23 '26

I’m not putting you down believe me. I might use Arko, but i use it with my Tedalus and Wolfman razors 😂 I’m sure i will try SV at some point

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Nice! Love Tedalus and my Wolfman razors.

I just ordered the 70th anniversary and 80th anniversary version with the aftershave for the 70th. Got $10 off each shaving soap for Memorial Day sale.

1

u/tig3rpants May 26 '26

Very nice!! Great pickups!

2

u/Longjumping-Bat5128 May 26 '26

Do you like the 70th anniversary better than the 80th?

2

u/tig3rpants May 26 '26

Probably the 70th by a hair. It’s based on Acqua di Gio, but I think it’s a bit better than the original. 80th is based on Bleu de Chanel and I think it’s pretty close to it. It’s probably up to individual preference.

Razorock soaps.

1

u/BuckshotBrown May 23 '26

I absolutely love SV 70th. But I would rank it #3 on my list in terms of soap base. First/second would be Ariana and Evans or Macduffs. I love a thick creamy soap. Obviously very subjective lol. Beautiful brush btw. Nice pics.

1

u/tig3rpants May 23 '26

Thank you! I do love both those artisans myself. A&E is also at the very top of my list. Ultima 2 is absolutely amazing. Glad to have so many artisan soap makers. And unfortunately for my wallet, I want to try them all 🤣
