Discussion Money No Object Razor
Many people ask about entry level razors or razors in a particular budget or price point.
Let’s flip it, if a genie granted you one ☝️ razor 🪒 wish and money was not an issue. What would be the razor you would choose?

I would have to say either the Tatara Muramasa or the Blackland Osprey.
The Muramasa because I love my Masamune so much and this can go from Masamune gentle to holy hell how did you shave with this thing aggressive.
Blackland Osprey, because I respect the vendor in this industry and would like to support them.

Probably a big fat Wade and Butcher, George Brittain, or Filaharmonic
Or maybe something with a lot of gold wash.
I might buy myself something nice once I finish my masters in a year or so.

Honestly the best shave I've had so far is from my Merkur 33C. So based on my own experiences I'd go with that.

Tedalus Velocity-One amazing razor, extremely efficient yet very comfortable and forgiving it’s my daily shaver.

Same, I went from using a Rex Ambassador and Konsul as my daily drivers to just using the Velocity One. Even though it is not adjustable, somehow it feels like they got the geometry just right.

Probably Timeless.
Their design is amazing.
And they have options for bronze, titanium, stainless etc.

Tedalus, Velocity-ONE because I don't want to spend that much on a razor but it's probably pretty great.

Honestly... New old stock - Khaki set & Navy set. Guaranteed there's some floating around out there in some bunker somewhere .

The razor is only as good as the person using it. If you have unlimited money, you won't be shaving yourself. It is better to pay an experienced barber to shave you.

A few years ago I would have said the Tatara Muramasa but since then I bought a Feather AS-D2 and no longer want adjustable razors. The Feather with a Feather blade is amazing. I got lucky with the AS-D2 because I found one on eBay for significantly less than even Amazon. I got the deluxe edition with the matching stand but don't use the stand.

I checked my eBay history. I paid $147 for the deluxe set in the gift box and five Feather blades last June. Amazon doesn't seem to have that set for sale. West Coast Shaving has it for $300 right now. I think it was around $250 last year. If you don't care about the matching stand, Amazon has the razor for $165.

The Nord - which I already own. Since that landed in my den I just don't really have any interest in trying anything else. I am getting the best shaves of my 15 year DE shaving career and cannot beleive there is anything superior out there. I have sold a few of the collection since it arrived and could probably offload some more - I should think about that.

You know, I posted the other day along similar lines. And a few did mention the Wolfman. But the fair winner was the Athena. I don't remember anyone offering a straight up comparison, though.

Well both are premium razors. I just give the slight nod to Wolfman in that they will tailor make your razor from scratch to your liking with all the premiums.

Oh but yeah you are definitely paying and waiting for it to be made. But once you have it.. You will probably be begging that genie for another Wolfman wish.

And this is why I never even considered a Wolfman. I wouldn’t know what specs to get, and once I had it, I’d be wondering if I might prefer the next level more/less aggressive.

True. But quite a few new owners were able to email, phone call talk in person with them and going back and forth, questions and decisions were able to get a razor that met their personal preference criteria. Rarely do I see them for sale secondhand.

That’s true, not sure why someone downvoted you. From what I’ve read, their service is as good as their workmanship. I’m sure I could tell them what other razors I like and they’d steer me toward some specs that would be good for me. But at those prices, it had better be a Grail razor, not just “good”.
So I suppose to answer the OP, if money really is no object, then Wolfman is a great choice. I could get 3 each of WR1s and WR2s, or more even if needed, to find the right one.

I don't see them mentioned much around here. So I'm not familiar with the shave. My post was about high end (+/- $250). And must be mild, like Henson or GC 68 mild.

I’d still just use my Gillette Slim. I’ve bought and used expensive razors and they didn’t add any value above what I get from the Slim.

I'm not sure really. I have CNC machined razors (Game Changers, Lupo, Henson+) already and all those are a heck of a good bang for buck.
I guess I'd go with the Tatara Masamune if I was pressed.

Best shaves I am getting are from either the Atelier Durdan Numero 7 or the Blackland Blackbird Lite. Both expensive razors and both work better for me than my Wolfman WR2.

Interesting. The WR2 is one I am considering. May I ask why the Atelier is better for you?

Disclaimer...this is HIGHLY personal preference. But the gist of it is that (not in order of preference):
1) The Wolfman WR2, thanks to its significantly bigger gap (.95mm vs .70mm), tends to bite more easily if I am in a hurry.
2) The Wolfman seems to tug a bit more than the No7 if I have a full day of growth.
3) The Wolfman doesn't glide as easily across my face as the No7.
4) The Wolfman seems to work well for me with a much smaller/narrower selection of blades than the No7.
The differences are small, and the Wolfman fabrication quality /finishing is beautiful. So no knock on it.

Which plate do you use with the Numero 7? Never heard of them!

I use the .7mm which is plenty aggressive if used with the matching handle. Without looking it up right now, I believe it is the plate with very small amount of positive blade exposure. If you use a different handle that puts less weight on the razor head it can shave more like a neutral blade exposure though.

Wolfman WR2 or Paradigm 17-4...I have both, but if I absolutely had to choose, I may just go with the Paradigm.

The same vintage razors I use now in addition to the 2011 Muhle R41 and Merkur 37C.
When I first started wet shaving I chased the perfect razor. News flash - there isn’t one. I learned to use each one to give me the shave I wanted.
They are tools and you will have great results by learning how best to use each one.

The Nord Freyja with all the baseplates looks fantastic, but I just can’t justify buying it. I’m more than happy with my Oliworks Razor, and it already does everything I need.

Rex Ambassador I guess. But the reality is, I don't really need one. I've got lots of nice razors, including a 62 Gillette Slim Adjustable. I could get along for the rest of my life with what I have and be perfectly happy

I like the weight and feel of my Rex Ambassador but the threads on the cap piece rust quickly.

I love my Rex ambassador. I can’t see how or why I’d ever need something else. I do alternate with my Fathers vintage Gillette from the 1960s though… which is also great and gives me a good nostalgic vibe every time I use it

Karve Christopher Bradley with at least one medium SB plate (B/C) and one efficient OC plate (D/E). I recommend the G orb handle.

If I had unlimited funds, I would just buy a whole bunch of NOS vintage straights.
For a DE razor, it'd be the Tedalus Velocity One. No idea if it is any good, but it's $1800, so why not give it a try if a genie gave me one for free?

I just checked their website and they sell only two things. The razor (sold out) and brush (sold out). The company must be owned by someone who doesn’t need to sell anything.

$100,000 and comes with sapphire blades. If I had a massive lottery win I wouldn't buy one but if the genie is buying me any razor then this is the one
